that al byrant not eddie kendricks this song was recorded in 1961 not 1962 was just the release date "isnt she pretty" and "my pillow" was al's lead the rest is eddie kendrick paradise is 1962 release the it is found on the album MEET THE TEMPTATIONS
@only4christ Eddie Kendricks is singing lead on 'Isn't She Pretty'. Not Al by any means. Al was not a lead singer for the Tempts. Listen to the vocal styling and phrasing. The riffs, and raspy texture in certain places. Classic Eddie Kendricks. As for this song, 'My Pillow', you can clearly hear that Eddie Kendricks is not singing the top note in the background. It sounds nothing like him. Al was phenomenal, but he is singing the background lead tenor harmony part.
It's Eddie singing lead. And the song was recorded June 22, 1962. The Temptations didn't exist in 1960. When the group splits "my pillow" it's Melvin, Otis, Al, and Paul. The only song where Al can be heard up front is "Isn't She Pretty" which was recorded October 22, 1961 and was the third song they recorded as a group.
@Cadeho3 You mean upfront in the background, right. Because that song features Paul, and Eddie on lead. Al is the high tenor in the background, after Eddie drops out, in the beginning to take the lead..."She...ee..ees pretty, now, now..."
@Cadeho3 You've got a great ear. You like to analyze the background harmonies just as I do. However, the order is Melvin, Al, Otis, then Paul. Listen to Otis's unmistakable falsetto under Al singing the second tenor on the part "pillow took your place".... When he sings out his voice is pretty strong in his natural upper range. Check out the ending of "Old Man River" when they sing "he just keeps rolling'' aaa...aa...a..aa...long". You'll hear the order Otis, Eddie, David, Paul.
@Renaissanceman1000 You're right, I must have swicthed them by mistake. Regarding "Isn't She Pretty," I disagree. Eddie's falsetto can clearly be heard in the background, particularly with the "She... so fine so fine so fine... how I wish she were mine all mine" at the end of the song. If Al is in the background, he sounds just like Eddie while the lead sounds like nothing Eddie's done, from the two songs that preceeded that recording through to "Slick".
@Renaissanceman1000 People have admitted the two could be confused for one another. Listen even closer to the song at 1:05 and 1:10 of the song when he sings "isn't she pretty now." he holds a much lower note than Eddie's ever sung while the group sings "a pretty pretty..." "Isn't She Pretty" was the third song they recorded at Motown and the reason they probably had Al sing here as they were probably giving each member a test run at the lead to figure out their sound.
@Renaissanceman1000 The first two were Paul and Eddie, then they tried "Isn't She Pretty" and it's usually listed as a group lead although Otis doesn't have a line. "Your Wonderful Love" was the 4th song with Paul only (listen close to that too and you hear Eddie starts the chorus too early one time (Gordy did like mistakes and sometimes left them in), then "Check Yourself" gave Otis an opening line with Melvin. After that, they stuck with either Paul or Eddie.
@Cadeho3 On try to remember, the background sings, "follow, follow, follow, follow", in the order Otis, David, Paul, Melvin. Sometimes Otis would take the top note, depending on what the song dictated. Ironically, he usually assumed the baritone position, though his voice is not that deep, or heavy. Also ironic, is that Paul sang the second tenor part in their early days, as heavy as his voice was. We don't really hear that too much. Unless, in falsetto, the blend was better when he sang lower.
