Though many bands have done it first and right, in my opinion it's hands down the best mix of Hardcore and Metal ever made. Check out Animosity by C.O.C. as well, thats a close runner up for 1st in my book.

Metallica's specific influences go something like...

Diamond Head + Motorhead + Iron Maiden + Judas Priest + Black Sabbath + The Misfits + Discharge + Charged GBH + Black Flag. Because they were the collective influences of the 4 members. Cliff was a massive Misfits and Ramones fan, as well as liking some more obscure Jazzy stuff.

Understand I'm not some elitist douche who believes everything he doesn't listen too sucks, just that I believe the vast majority of metal isn't that great. We all got our preferences.

@AKstraightedge Doom definitely was more discharge oriented than grind, but you should decide for yourself. The beauty of music is that it is so interpretive. I find them to be more crust/hardcore, but someone else might have a different opinion. As for black metal, I agree, I.N. are cool. You should check out early Bathory too, the punk influence is very blatant.
