This is a great film that has been unjustly neglected over the years and it is one of the first great films (i.e., non-Hollywood) I remember seeing. Few films depict the hopelessness and pent-up rage of the British lower class and the weight of the British caste system that, to this day, often defines one's lot in life from birth.
This film is as timely now as it was when it was first released nearly fifty years ago.
This is one unforgettable scene of this remarkable film. This scene has been in my heart for over 30 years since I saw the film for the first time! I was really touched by seeing these rebellious boys singing "Jerusalem" so earnestly. I could see that even these "bad boys" who have broken social rules have a strong core principle or belief to keep within them. That gave me a very profound impression.
This film portrays its characters and their lives honestly, the working class is not saintly, and also with dignity.
These boys know how their government works, how the system has abused their families. When they rebel against the administration, it is based on principle.
They fight to claim an identity of their choosing, not to assimilate into an aristocratic tradition to which they have only ever played a subservient role.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

I did Rochester borstal in 1975. Brutal place ... it made me a brutal person when I was released ... cold and hateful.
