I love both singers for different reasons so it's really hard to choose. Amy was my first hero and I've been listening to Evanescence since their debut, but Tarja brought a whole new world to me and Nightwish is my favorite band. The two have drastically different vocal styles, though both have good high and low tones. Amy uses more of a belted style while Tarja sings with a lot of vibrato in a more operatic performance. The choice is hard. They're both great singers in their own ways.
Both sound gorgeous in the studio. Amy sounds horrible live (believe me, I really wanted to think she was awesome when I listened to them live, but she sounded strained and struggling and came up flat on a lot of notes), while Tarja sounds just as beautiful live. The End of an Era performance of Phantom of the Opera is proof of that. (Notice Tarja's examples are live and Amy's are studio.) Tarja's voice is stronger than many mens' voices. There's simply no comparison.
I love both. You can't really compare them because their voices and music are so different, but I choose Tarja. Amy's really great, but Tarja just blows me away time and time again. Plus, when it comes to singing live, Amy is not very good most of the time :/

If you heard her voice live, you'll know she can hit way higher notes than Amy Lee. Amy Lee's lyrics are usually meant for teenagers, when Nightwish's lyrics serve people of all different ages. Overally, Tarja is the better singer, comparing the two live.

I watched plenty of her highest vocals VS Amy Lee. You can't be sure until you watch the best quality live shows and compare them. Plus, Nightwish's lyrics were always unique as well as the sound. No metal band had a singer like Tarja. That's what made them different.

Evanescence's songs are all depressive, while all of Nightwish's lyrics are different. Opera voices are some of the most unique and difficult vocal styles to learn. Not everyone can reach the notes an Opera singer can. Amy Lee's voice is very mainstream. Maybe better than the pop singers, but out of Tarja and Amy, Tarja does have the better vocals.

@Replicatorz to be fair you can't change your vocal type/range (only slightly extend your range) with training. You are what you are. Being a mezzo doesn't mean you are less skilled than a soprano :) It's just a different voice type.

I really don't see how people can even compare amy lee and tarja turunen. Amy Lee is a special woman who literally went out there and created her OWN type of music to fit her voice. She writes her own stuff and her voice has that pop quality even WITHOUT a computer and if you look at her in concert, she sounds EXACTLY the same as she does on cd. Tarja Turunen has an operatic voice. Classically trained FOR OPERA. So you can't really compare them at all.
I pick Tarja in this competition. Maybe compare Amy Lee to Simone Simons. If you actually listen to Epica's "Not Enough", she sounds just like Amy Lee in that song.
Tarja's vocals are like no other in the Metal world, especially the magic and uniqueness it brought to Nightwish. I love her! She's my inspiration. Amy is good, but she can't reach the vocals of classical notes. Her music is more depressive, while Tarja's is mostly fantasy related. It depends on your style. Most would agree that Tarja has an impressive vocal range, but still prefer Amy because her songs have something to do with them. Tarja's are both for youth and mature audience.

Of course Tarja is so much better than Amy, in this video we can hear Tarja singing live in the concert "End of an Era" but just the recording of Evanescence's album Fallen, if you hear Evanescence live, I think you note the great difference between both singers, Amy cannot sin live but Tarja, oh come on!! she rocks, and.... Their voices are COMPLETELY different, so I barely compared that (though I like Amy's voice better), but Amy wrote MOST of the Evanescence songs AND composed almost all songs on her own (especially on The Open Door, on Fallen Ben Moody helped her with writing and composing). Tarja just sang, and let the other band members do that. So, yeah. Sorry. Tarja, I pick Amy.

@Replicatorz to be fair you can't change your vocal type/range (only slightly extend your range) with training. You are what you are. Being a mezzo doesn't mean you are less skilled than a soprano :) It's just a different voice type.

I really don't see how people can even compare amy lee and tarja turunen. Amy Lee is a special woman who literally went out there and created her OWN type of music to fit her voice. She writes her own stuff and her voice has that pop quality even WITHOUT a computer and if you look at her in concert, she sounds EXACTLY the same as she does on cd. Tarja Turunen has an operatic voice. Classically trained FOR OPERA. So you can't really compare them at all.

Tarja's vocals are like no other in the Metal world, especially the magic and uniqueness it brought to Nightwish. I love her! She's my inspiration. Amy is good, but she can't reach the vocals of classical notes. Her music is more depressive, while Tarja's is mostly fantasy related. It depends on your style. Most would agree that Tarja has an impressive vocal range, but still prefer Amy because her songs have something to do with them. Tarja's are both for youth and mature audience.

You can either like this mix or hate it, it is not easy to be "digested"!
