  • I could be wrong but ... that looks very much like the aged John L Sullivan standing in the ring and before the fight begins. He attended many fights long after his retirement and was often presented to the crowd.

  • @Maitland99 - Good guess, but that is annoncer Billy Jordan.

  • GOOD TRY AUSSIE BILL.

  • Squires was a stiff,it shows how poor boxing was in Australia was then(With Squires having such a great record)

  • Packolorentay, the ref was James J Jeffries - former heavyweight champ who came out of retirement to get soundly beaten by Jack Johnson 3 years later (1910).

Jeffries retired in 1905 and pretty much ballooned in weight to 300lbs.

  • wow....tanx 4 uploading, thats a treasure!!!!them boxers were big enough but whats the story with the ref???he's like andre the giant...he must've loved his bacon and cabbage

  • @packolorentay

Just to put things in perspective...

Burns fought as a heavyweight at 5'7"

Jeffries, the referee, towers over Burns and Squires at 6'0" and Sqires was 5'10 1/2"

Both Klitschkos are over 6' 5" as was Lennox Lewis

Obviously, technique and training methods have both improved immensely over the last 100 years. The old timers were mostly laborers and farmers and were naturally strong and tough but the modern athlete is scientifically trained to be far superior physically.
