It's so hard to say who was the best female singer in rock/pop history. I'd say the top three contenders are: Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin. Aretha was a soul singer and the best at it. Janis was a blues singer and the best at it. Tina Turner, when all is said and done, was The Bomb! She was a professional way before Aretha and Janis even started out. Tina is STILL rockin' out. Nobody could belt it out like Tina. Damn, was she HOT back in The Day. I'd say it's Tina ... #1.
Most of today's singers are based on shallow image only & very little talent. Back in the 1950's thru 1980's, you had to have talent & a singing voice to make it......the quality of the song, voice strength, melody, the voice range, creativity of the sound & raw passion was far superior then. Thank God for youtube to bring back these classics back to life.
Of course, there are many other greats. Tina could easily be considered Number One. The power. The passion. The style. Tell me this woman isn't gorgeous, and I'll say, "You're blind, man!" Best of all, she's a great person ... and is STILL rockin' out!
Love you, Tina! Check out the Ickettes. What a hoot. Amazing, amazing performance.
Ike and Tina were making their rounds to juke joints and honky tonks back then and they rolled into a juke joint in central missouri one night and OOOOHHHHH' what a show did they put on' LOVED IT" LOVED IT"
Tina is the bomb! Such a great performer! And has a wonderful heart. Cant see why Ike would of treated her in the way he did. Im so glad she got past that and deserves the recognition she's earned! She gives 100% in every performance! And one of the best concerts Ive ever seen!
todays singers ( and bands ) stand no chance against performers like Tina and Ike's band. With the enhanced electronics of today most of them should be ashamed of themselves for thinking they are 'Singers etc'
To IRONMUNSTER: Thanks for posting this vid! Many, many younger folks never, ever say Tina back in her heyday. Thanks to you, now they can see just how amazing she was back in The Day! You've done a real service to younger viewers put putting this on YouTube. Thanks again, man! Peace.
Folks, we could argue back and forth all day long about who's The Best: Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner or Janis Joplin ... when it comes to beltin' it out. Know what? It doesn't matter who's The Best. THEY'RE ALL AWESOME! I've loved Tina for 40+ years now, and I STILL do! Cook, Mama, cook!!! She's goin' on tour again this summer ... and she's almost 70! Oh, yeah!!! Dig it! Peace.
This has got to be the all-time best rendering of this song. Such power! And such a voice! She really throws herself into it. I don't think anyone will ever beat this. Thanks, Ironmunster for sharing it.

Not as good as the original recording - no wall of sound.

@1bridlington Yes, and the maraccas are a stupid distraction!

This version completely dumps the original melody line in the vocals. That was the real hook of this song. Shame that they changed it later one. :-/

Personal picks for favorite female singers:
1.) Janis Joplin
2.) Tina Turner (Annie Mae Bullock)
3.) Arethra Franklin.
