Its seems very clear now why shuttleworth and gnome have turned to unity and gnome 3. Just take a look at Window 8. They seem to be running after the coat tails of Microsoft. I almost believed shuttleworths pitch, but if Microsoft did not make the move they did in Windows 8 this scramble for attention from ubuntu and gnome would not be. The writing is so on the wall..... so sad.
@winustolinuxfully That's all very nice and all, but how can Gnome and Canonical be copying Microsoft when Gnome shell was previewed in 2009 when Windows 7 was only just getting ready to RTM, and has been in development since then.... MS shows an "application" in 2011 that runs on windows, like windows media centre... not a real new UI... and suddenly Gnome/Canonical is copying Microsoft. Not really!
@lewiar keep digging you will also find that Windows 8 was on the table at the same time. Very obvious that you are oblivious to this fact. Nevertheless how ironic these two gui's resemble Windows 8, Guarantee you if they were not aware of where Microsoft and Mac was moving to linux would still be at gnome 2. Theres no attraction from dumb down gui's from our side and the finger gagger is NO driver support for any in store purchaces. Thats what ebay is for, old outdated hardware.
@winustolinuxfully I'm afraid what you're saying is not credible... Gnome's decision that the UI needed to be revamped was taken at the GUADEC conference in Istanbul in July 2008, this is 6 months before the first leaked beta of Windows 7, and before the decision to revamp Windows Mobile (which is where MS developed the panel based UI)... Gnome's redesign was in response to the earlier redesign of KDE, not to Microsoft plans which were yet to be made... stop trying to revise history.
The website says this"Ubuntu is a fast, secure and easy-to-use operating system used by( millions) of people around the world." Ok then, Millions are already using ubuntu. Why then does he say he wants 200 million users if millions of users already use ubuntu? Is it because both statements are false? If ubuntu is compatible with all hardware then why team up with asus for hardware support? Is it because this statement is false to? Why drop Lebre Office from the next release? Um, Dell?
@winustolinuxfully Mark has previously said that we have about 8-12 million users. Aiming for 200 Million is quite a goal, neither statement is false. We team up with Asus to provide the computer with Ubuntu pre-installed, which is how most people get their OS these days.
@popeydc 8-12 million is a large amount just in itself for a linux distro.. I just read the article stating why ubuntu is teaming up with asus, they desperately need hardware and driver support. But i also thought this was why they teamed up with Dell In a old article they put out as well. I got my version of ubuntu by downloading from the ubuntu site. Wishing all the best to him.
I used to love ubuntu after spending years using other distros like slackware and gentoo I landed on ubuntu but unity is the wrong move for ubuntu which is essentially downstream Debian . Now google have shown chrome os and chrome books where's the 200 million users going to come from.
@dhibb35 chrome os is a joke. Google uses the cloud strategy which has no chance to win any time soon cause it can't fight the likes of mac or window$ on an even ground. Canonical is fighting a straight fight and I thin it will win. Google's cloud based OS is a joke, I'm telling you that as a (former) web dev, Javascript isn't good enough to create serious software for many reasons - no matter how much Google's lying that JavaScript is fast enough.
I'm a brand new Linux user coming from windows, ubuntu 11.04 was installed on my pc, i used it for 2 weeks with many phone calls to my linux support person. learning curve medium to high, after the 2 weeks my support person came back, i asked him does linux offer any thing that's more windows like?, he removed ubuntu and installed linuxmint debian xfce. What a difference. I've been using Debian for almost 2 weeks again and have only called my support person for compiz questions.
@winustolinuxfully my initial thoughts about ubuntu was a application for my phone, functionality for me was less than expected only because my ability to right click and customize seemed poor. My 2 high end printers we couldn't get working, he said they weren't supported, but he did get them going in debian. I can't get used to the fact i don't need virus software. I'm learning the software for linuxmint debian xfce, most of the software i use does not seem to have a equal

Linux4unme is at least a Linux user and I feel comes from a much more valid position than a windows or mac user slagging off Linux in general.
@swathepocalypse I switched to Arch as it offers a more streamlined and customisable experience, but I don't begrudge peoples choice to use and love ubuntu. @jebril I got this impression myself to. But i just think hes a fag. The reason i say this is his feminine posture and demeanor. He really needs to be open source about it and come out of the closet.......lol show us your source code and we will make you straight again! lol..lol
I don't think I'll leave Ubuntu. I bounced around on distros when I first started, but when I tried 9.10, I fell in love and I finally gave Windows the boot. No matter where Ubuntu goes I'll go as well. The most awesome part of Ubuntu is the ability to configure. Who says you can't get Gnome 2.32...even if it wasn't in the repos anymore and you didn't get the choice on log in, doesn't mean you can get it back. I seriously can't tell why the pro people are so upset. Just boot into gnome?!
I want to take this moment to thank Mr. Shuttleworth and the entire Ubuntu crew for the new 11.04 version of Ubuntu. This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No Offence Mark but you have ruined Ubuntu with that Unity Garbage... A large user base have and are moving on to Alternatives.... I hope it all works out in the end for Ubuntu but I am highly skeptical judging by my own experiences with it and seeing mostly negative reviews and reactions by the very users you are trying to win over.... But meh... what do I care... I don't use Ubuntu :)
@Seaweedaids This enlightened comment makes a lot of sense especially if you take into account that he specifically mentions that he holds the minority view...
no. I am judging by the comments, reactions, reviews by users in my community, other communities and the Ubuntu community itself. There is even several Poll votes that statistically prove that the "majority" have voted negatively instead of hitting the "good" or "great" options. It is not merely my own opinion I am reflecting. But that is all I have to say... It doesn't really effect me anyways therefore I don't care much. Happy Computing or Ubuntu "ing" If you Dig Unity. Cya's
@Linux4UnMe "I am judging by the comments, reactions, reviews by users in my community, other communities and the Ubuntu community itself." Congrats you can do what any reporter with no clue can do, this has been explained on the Ubuntu forums year after year after year, people don't go to the forums when they have something that works and is great, they go there with problems, for example World of Warcraft is the no.1 game in the world, but according to their forums it's the worst thing ever...
@Linux4UnMe Just use a different version of ubuntu, if you like ubuntu. No reason to switch to an alternative just because their most recent version isn't something you like. just MHO
I do not use Ubuntu. I am referring to the majority of the Ubuntu Communities current thoughts/reactions to Unity and how Most are displeased and moving on. I'm sure Many will stay with Ubuntu, I am just pointing out that Many Users will not due to the Unity decision come 11.10
@Linux4UnMe You mean the decision to remove The Classic Desktop?
that decision comes from the point that Unity is being moved from a GNOME 2 to a GNOME 3 base. The true classic desktop experience relies on what? GNOME 2. You CANNOT have both and not have something break. The move to havE Unity on top of GNOME 3 for a base is a good one as it keeps things up to date with other distros that are moving to a GNOME 3 base as well.
Also remember GNOME 3 does have its own fallback too.
You can still use gnome-panel or anything in Gnome 2xx / Gtk2 on Gnome 3, it is perfectly compatible, It just requires you to enable some missing features that were there before and change the themeing..... Which does not happen in fallback mode in Gnome 3 by default.... You do have a Valid point though, And I understand the decision. I only wish they held Unity back atleast until 11.10 when it will atleast be vastly improved by then instead of having it default in 11.04
@Linux4UnMe Eh, still tends to break a lot of things from what I hear people who try to push a lot of the old stuff into GNOME 3.
Eh. I think its great they managed to get it into 11.04. But then again I'm under the opinion that the LTS releases do serve the purpose of being that stable release for people to use long-term if they don't think some of the new stuff in the non-LTS releases are ready yet.
@Linux4UnMe Before judging something, you should try it and find out by yourself. Also, take a look at what kind of user is displeased and read their points bit by bit carefully. I have and most of it is just crying about something "different" to what has been good and known so far. Want Gnome? Do it. Want Unity? Do it. Freedom is given. It's like when Microsoft went from 2D XP to 3D Aero Vista/7. Just wait for it to settle down, get more polished and a bit more mature - = the next LTS.
You think I havn't tried it extensively? What do you think it is I do on youtube? ;)
Anyways... You are entitled to your opinion like anyone else.... but I will never be convinced that Unity is really going to make a difference in Ubuntu User numbers... I think it will have the opposite effect... Nobody wants an Osx half baked ripoff except a small minority.... And Mark's Goal of some 200 million users in 4 years is Hilarious. Again... my opinions... Not trying to Flame. I'm Done.
@Linux4UnMe "I will never..." I don't think the word "ever" is appropriate. You don't like unity 1.0. You may change your mind once unity 2.0 is out. Do you know how it is going to develope? No Does Ubuntu know? No. I like it, but it has to improve, definitely.
@Linux4UnMe@Linux4UnMe "Not trying to Flame. I'm Done." Which is why you went to the Ubuntu founders Keynote address on youtube and start promoting Linux Mint as a real alternative to Unity... yeah nice one.
Here's a hint, look at KDE 4.0, look at the reactions, and look where KDE4 is now and how many people are using KDE 3.5 today, and then look at your reaction and realise you're a carbon copy of the 4.0 haters from years ago. ._.
LoL Geez mate you are so defensive about Ubuntu. I suggested "Mint" cause that particular user said he is on the fence about natty/unity, therefore he is not sure if he likes it or not and I made a suggestion if he doesn't like it, then give mint a whirl. What's the big deal? You act as if Ubuntu is the Only Answer and people should be loyal to it or something.
As for your last argument, Sane Devs held off from Kde4.0 as default until it was ready. Others Lost alot of users at the time
@Linux4UnMe I don't think Ubuntu is the only answer (lol) and the "use mint" argument has been responded to multiple times, I'm simply complaining your arguments lack substance and give me a headache, to top it off you then walk around with an air of importance.
Geez, say anything negative about Ubuntu and the FanBoy's come out swinging. LoL. I am only suggesting that Unity "should" be held off until atleast 11.10 when it will be more stable and complete as opposed to 11.04 where it is not ready for prime time. Everything I have said are my opinions based upon my experience and seeing many other users reactions, reviews and opinions. Don't be offended sheesh. If you like it. use it. Ofcoarse there are going to be skeptics such as myself.
I can feel it now... more comments coming like "oh but you said this.... you said that.... You hate Ubuntu, blah blah blah.."
Really... what is the point of continuing this discussion.... It is a love or hate scenerio. Alot of people would agree with me and many won't. I am not trying to convert anybodies thoughts to start disliking it.... But I do indeed Dislike it and that aint gonna change. End of Debate
@Linux4UnMe "Alot" is not a word. "End of Debate", it's not a debate if you simply just state what you believe and ignore everyone else, that's called religion. "what is the point" the point is getting through to you that you don't know what you're talking about. You're a linux user, not "The Register" or "PC World" who drop in, get some opinions and report back to their Windows camps about an irrelevant OS they'll never use, so stop acting like them.
@Linux4UnMe "Unity "should" be held off" Congrats you don't know how the Ubuntu dev cycle works, and you appear to have limited knowledge of why it was released in 11.04 instead of 11.10, you appear to have a limited knowledge of the whole thing, you substitute this lack of knowledge with opinions and call yourself a skeptic. Skeptics don't replace a lack of knowledge with opinion and BS.
No, I know exactly how the Dev cycle works... But do you think the Average user who knows nothing about Linux/Opensource/Ubuntu does? ofcoarse not.... And does Canonical make it clear on their website that non LTS releases contain buggy, testing software which should not be installed on production machines? No. If that is their intention then they should make it more clear on their website So Average users are aware before they download a Crappy Half Baked Operating System. You Lose
@Linux4UnMe Yes, but the LTS has been out for a year and a month now. The applications and features loaded with it have been upgraded, and it's now pretty stable. I tried using it at it's release and it seemed stable to me, and a big jump over 9.10. After a few months out, and the few bugs I did have issues with were fixed. That's the thing about a LTS. It's better for productivity because stability and security updates will be made over several years instead of 18 months.
@Linux4UnMe Didn't you write, a few comments back, that you don't use Ubuntu and your opinion on this is based of reactions ppl have given on the forums? Also, I do want that "half baked ripoff" and so does my family, which are absolute newcomers and barley managed Windows. Mark's goal is called a VISION, which seems very likely, if you see how fast Ubuntu is developing, the price (zero) and what they offer. A bit more polish, some good partners/apps and some good commercial support = Awesome.
What has that got to do with my comment? I was Talking about the Default Out of the Box experience you got in Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity, ofcoarse you can change to Gnome classic... But that option will be removed in 11.10 and This will turn away Most Ubuntu Users who don't like Unity and can't be bothered manually removing Unity and install Gnome from the repos When they can just use Mint which will be keeping Gnome Classic
@Linux4UnMe The default out of the box experience for Gnome 2 and Ubuntu isn't that impressive in the first place. I'm sure that with people who've been with Linux thus far are willing to be bothered by typing in some lines of code in the terminal. Unity is for the average person, who will freak out if they accidentally removed a panel. I'm sure that once 12.04 comes out (the LTS release) it'll be great.
By 12.04? Maybe.... But in the meantime they should of held it back as a tech preview until they are sure Unity is complete and ready for mainstream adoption instead of putting it as Default. People Freak out when their favourite Distribution Put Buggy incomplete software on it by default... Turns new users off instead of attracting them. Canonical are Shooting Themselves in the Foot by doing this
@Linux4UnMe Installing Mint is much more to ask from a new user, then just installing Gnome 3 from the U-Software-Centre. Also, while Unity might bring some ppl to leave, it will bring new users. So, by all means, this isn't that much of a big deal, as some ppl put it to be. If you don't like it, change it. Especially power users will have no prob. doing that. You know what a BIG deal was? TEARING. It has been in hundreds of Linux distrobutions. Finally one of them (Ubuntu) got rid of that.
@AbsintheSyringe thanks for the pep talk... Maybe I'll get the money to take myself to Europe or the US one day. Ubuntu is getting bigger in Australia, but it's still pretty much Microsoft land at the moment. When Natty was in Alpha I was running it on my laptop from a Live CD and showed it to a Mac fangirl. She was so impressed she wanted to try running Ubuntu on her laptop :) I love the Unity interface, it's going to be huge especially after 12.04

Every year, the amount of users would have to increase 66-fold for 4 years.

Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe you act like you're speaking for a majority when you clearly aren't
Seaweedaids 9 months ago 7
@Seaweedaids This enlightened comment makes a lot of sense especially if you take into account that he specifically mentions that he holds the minority view...
WYVERNSSS 9 months ago
@Seaweedaids

No reason to switch to an alternative just because their most recent version isn't something you like. just MHO

@onTOPtheROCK
I do not use Ubuntu. I am referring to the majority of the Ubuntu Communities current thoughts/reactions to Unity and how Most are displeased and moving on. I'm sure Many will stay with Ubuntu, I am just pointing out that Many Users will not due to the Unity decision come 11.10
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe You mean the decision to remove The Classic Desktop?
that decision comes from the point that Unity is being moved from a GNOME 2 to a GNOME 3 base. The true classic desktop experience relies on what? GNOME 2. You CANNOT have both and not have something break. The move to havE Unity on top of GNOME 3 for a base is a good one as it keeps things up to date with other distros that are moving to a GNOME 3 base as well.
Also remember GNOME 3 does have its own fallback too.
silvercondouloboy06 9 months ago
@silvercondouloboy06
I only wish they held Unity back atleast until 11.10 when it will atleast be vastly improved by then instead of having it default in 11.04
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe Eh, still tends to break a lot of things from what I hear people who try to push a lot of the old stuff into GNOME 3.
Eh. I think its great they managed to get it into 11.04. But then again I'm under the opinion that the LTS releases do serve the purpose of being that stable release for people to use long-term if they don't think some of the new stuff in the non-LTS releases are ready yet.
silvercondouloboy06 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe Before judging something, you should try it and find out by yourself. Also, take a look at what kind of user is displeased and read their points bit by bit carefully. I have and most of it is just crying about something "different" to what has been good and known so far. Want Gnome? Do it. Want Unity? Do it. Freedom is given. It's like when Microsoft went from 2D XP to 3D Aero Vista/7. Just wait for it to settle down, get more polished and a bit more mature - = the next LTS.
AleXy86 9 months ago
@AleXy86
I'm Done.
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe "I will never..." I don't think the word "ever" is appropriate. You don't like unity 1.0. You may change your mind once unity 2.0 is out. Do you know how it is going to develope? No Does Ubuntu know? No. I like it, but it has to improve, definitely.
bhigr 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe @Linux4UnMe "Not trying to Flame. I'm Done." Which is why you went to the Ubuntu founders Keynote address on youtube and start promoting Linux Mint as a real alternative to Unity... yeah nice one.
Here's a hint, look at KDE 4.0, look at the reactions, and look where KDE4 is now and how many people are using KDE 3.5 today, and then look at your reaction and realise you're a carbon copy of the 4.0 haters from years ago. ._.
ikt123 9 months ago
@ikt123
Others Lost alot of users at the time
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe I don't think Ubuntu is the only answer (lol) and the "use mint" argument has been responded to multiple times, I'm simply complaining your arguments lack substance and give me a headache, to top it off you then walk around with an air of importance.
ikt123 9 months ago
@ikt123
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
I can feel it now... more comments coming like "oh but you said this.... you said that.... You hate Ubuntu, blah blah blah.."
Really... what is the point of continuing this discussion.... It is a love or hate scenerio. Alot of people would agree with me and many won't. I am not trying to convert anybodies thoughts to start disliking it.... But I do indeed Dislike it and that aint gonna change. End of Debate
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago

Skeptics don't replace a lack of knowledge with opinion and BS.
ikt123 9 months ago
@ikt123
You Lose

Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe Yes, but the LTS has been out for a year and a month now. The applications and features loaded with it have been upgraded, and it's now pretty stable. I tried using it at it's release and it seemed stable to me, and a big jump over 9.10. After a few months out, and the few bugs I did have issues with were fixed. That's the thing about a LTS. It's better for productivity because stability and security updates will be made over several years instead of 18 months.
benjamina222 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe Didn't you write, a few comments back, that you don't use Ubuntu and your opinion on this is based of reactions ppl have given on the forums? Also, I do want that "half baked ripoff" and so does my family, which are absolute newcomers and barley managed Windows. Mark's goal is called a VISION, which seems very likely, if you see how fast Ubuntu is developing, the price (zero) and what they offer. A bit more polish, some good partners/apps and some good commercial support = Awesome.
AleXy86 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe I have this crazy idea. Just hear me out. Install Gnome. I know, it may be crazy, but I think you can do it.
korwinblue 9 months ago
@korwinblue
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe The default out of the box experience for Gnome 2 and Ubuntu isn't that impressive in the first place. I'm sure that with people who've been with Linux thus far are willing to be bothered by typing in some lines of code in the terminal. Unity is for the average person, who will freak out if they accidentally removed a panel. I'm sure that once 12.04 comes out (the LTS release) it'll be great.
korwinblue 9 months ago
@korwinblue
True. But it is Stable and feature complete.
By 12.04? Maybe.... But in the meantime they should of held it back as a tech preview until they are sure Unity is complete and ready for mainstream adoption instead of putting it as Default. People Freak out when their favourite Distribution Put Buggy incomplete software on it by default... Turns new users off instead of attracting them. Canonical are Shooting Themselves in the Foot by doing this
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe Installing Mint is much more to ask from a new user, then just installing Gnome 3 from the U-Software-Centre. Also, while Unity might bring some ppl to leave, it will bring new users. So, by all means, this isn't that much of a big deal, as some ppl put it to be. If you don't like it, change it. Especially power users will have no prob. doing that. You know what a BIG deal was? TEARING. It has been in hundreds of Linux distrobutions. Finally one of them (Ubuntu) got rid of that.

@AbsintheSyringe I am so jealous. I wish the UDS could come to Australia, but I doubt that'll ever be feasible :(

@Alexandermeister trust me everything is possible, never say never :)
