Oil and control are the basic economic reasons.

The reason for the destruction is incompetence by executive branches of government who were clueless as to what to do to maintain order in a conquered land. It was lack of planning, experience, foresight and the arrogance of refusing to listen to experienced people.

It's the idiocy of those leaders who believe in Hollywood fantasies instead of communal solutions that have proved workable.
