Wow, reading the comments. Wonder why people are so angry.
Requesting the option means requesting TG, FS, Missed and SG. You don't have request anything else!!! What are these people commenting about? Thats the whole point of the "OPTION!?!?!" Also whats with the non-pilots critiquing every video, too weird.
Nice to see this airport in you tube broadcast as i am currently training in this same airport for my private helicopter licence in r22b. well good video nice quality.
@abrahamim we plugged the 1/4" intercom jack into the XLR mic input in my camera. You can't just plug the audio into a recorder because it's a "line" output. If you don't have something to attenuate the signal it'll sound really bad.
@nickbr007 hey thanks for the reply! I'm currently working on my instrument rating and I realized that if I could record the intercoms, I would be able to recap each of my flights and understand what my instructor was trying to teach me. Do you know what equipment I can use just to record the intercom? Thanks
They didn't know what type land you were until short final? And BTW, don't listen to this hammerdork, camping on the runway is fine if you don't mind getting landed on.
I enjoyed this video, great landing dude!! I trained and got my PPL this past summer at KISP. Great but tough experience dealing with ATC. I also like that camera! Great Job!!
Let's see, ahhhh, in my rookie aviation experience, "cleared for the option" has always meant: (as stated above). This "controller ?" is either having a bad day (which it sounds), or, I hate to say it: DOESN'T KNOW WHAT CLEARED FOR THE OPTION MEANS!! Might have to send him back to OK for refresher training. N-6395T
Wait, you said option for the go-around. Which means you asked for a go-around. But that controller and you both said option. You both goofed. It's better to ask if you have questions.
Option might have worked if the controller didnt have any other traffic, they will often just give it to you...he should have just requested a touch and go from the start so the controller would understand his intentions.
@mostly4moderate Good observation! I shot the ILS down to minimums at 100knots (spacing for landing traffic below us) and never dropped in flaps, so we did float quiteeeee a bit.
@flyingpertyhigh That's not the point everyone. He should have cancelled IFR and then asked for the option. His whole demeanor was condescending and he was totally in the wrong!
Cleared for the option means...Full Stop/taxiback, low approach, go around.
At a field that handles IFR traffic, they want to know if you are "staying with tower" "back to RADAR for an approach" "Pick up IFR departure" "pick up VFR departure"
I fly into JFK and LGA all the time, and as long as you are professional with them, the controllers are professional with you.
@youareabunchofjerks Yes, I am aware that the option has multiple meanings, go around not being one of them, and Touch and Go being one of them. I am used to class D airspace where no communication is needed after requesting the option and being cleared for it. I was caught by surprise in this class C airspace. Definitely learned to be much more clear next time - was a great learning experience.
@stevegauth30 I agree with that. Read back your call sign man. The controller simply told you what his opinion was and was just making sure you knew what you were doing. Ego man... gotta watch that.
Are you the guys who were recently on downwind and you turned base and the controller was like your not cleared to land and you are like im already on base and he is like turn back to downwide and you are like here we go?
Government employee...you expect different? I hate controllers like this and there are too many of them. Hate your job mister controller? FIND ANOTHER ONE! Lots of attitude and sarcasm. Needs to be moved to the new government health care system. He'll be great at telling people with cancer, " I already told you, I don't know if you're going to die!"
In addition, as per the FAR / AIM, definition of Cleared for the Option: "ATC authorization for an aircraft to make a touch-and-go, low approach, missed approach, stop and go, or full stop landing at the discretion of the pilot..." My asking for the option in response to a landing clearance should have been indication enough that I was not planning on landing.
hey guys, I was the pilot on this flight. Although I could have been more clear upon what my intentions were, as per the far / aim my request for the option was correct as @skipplet said.
FARAIM: "An approach requested and conducted by a pilot which will result in either a touch-and-go, missed approach, low approach, stop-and-go, or full stop landing.
"Requesting the option". Might wanna be clear next time what you want, as there are many ie. stop and go, touch and go, stop and wait etc. ATC can't read minds, so next time be clear on your intentions. Otherwise cool video.
@nickbr007 You. Cleared for the option has nothing to do with a touch and go. From my experience it was always for a go-around. Also if you are shooting an ILS app. in VFR conditions, the controller wants to know your intentions. Full stop landing? Missed App? T+G ?
@nickbr007 lol. you're pilot is a bit arrogant, and not clear on his communication skills. wouldn't it have been better to plan a little? Pulling the sectional out on climb out is a bit much. take off and landing are the two times when pilot work load is the greatest. Anyway, I've heard people ask for the option and get the same response. They offer you the option, you should ask for a touch and go.
@C172Pilotdude Cleared for the option means you can do a touch and go, go around, or full stop. He was right in asking for the option instead of accepting the clearance to land.
The controllers didn't sound angry to me... maybe annoyed, but that's probably because of all the booger eating Cessnas cluttering up the airport.
@C172Pilotdude In my (admittedly small) RW GA experience, being cleared for the option gives us just that: the option of making a touch and go, low pass, etc. When I've been cleared for the option, I tell tower my intentions ("Cleared for the option, 26. This one will be a low-pass into left closed traffic, 6JF") and carry them through. It sounded like the pilot stated he wanted a touch and go moving towards a VFR departure. Maybe the dropping of IFR complicates things? I'm not sure. Thoughts?
@C172Pilotdude Cleared for the option has everything to do with a touch and go. How was this comment rated with likes? Read the far/aim guys. "ATC authorization for an aircraft to make a touch-and-go, low approach, missed approach, stop and go, or full stop landing at the discretion of the pilot."

@C172Pilotdude "Cleared for the option" allows the pilot to do one of four things: Full-stop landing, touch-and-go landing, stop-and-go landing, or a low pass. The controller was an idiot for asking the pilot "option for what?" The controller should know what the hell an option is. That is basic stuff right there. So the Controller doesn't like VFR T&G?
Tell him I said "Kiss my ass".
You should have told him you wanted an S&G and then just sat there.
You would have been cleared to 'Stop"...the "Go" part is at Pilot's discretion.
You could have sat there for hours.
Shame there was only one runway, otherwise you could have stopped at the intersection and shut the whole airport down.
That would've pissed him off.
