@wayzey - i have to disagree - as the lyrics say "the orders...come from you and me" - donovan was trying to highlight that although those in power appear to control the soldier, it is in fact us who are responsible, the population who silently allow it to continue, we all have a duty to stop allowing the war machine to destroy others.
you hit the nail on the head...dont forget the decision of the soldier though. The decision to pull the trigger is that of the soldier, for they are, ultimately, human beings. Wayzee had it right. But war is on the heads of all that dont actively work against it. If you love your country...work to put an end to war.
you should not carry hate - it will only serve to consume you. it will fill you with hurt, hate begets hate, just as violence begets violence. The Germans of today do not represent those of the facist Nazi era.
@leeuwarden52 Oh?You do? Hmm, though they really had no choice? Hitler was a dictator. It's all good, nowadays, to say no to someone with a pen. Say it while your children are at gunpoint. That's what the German population of the time had to deal with. Proud German, Anti-Nazi. By the way, my grandfather married a German lady. He was in the US Marine corps, fighting in the pacific. So the only one who should be hated, is the people like you.
Every time I listen to this song I break down and cry because it reminds so much of the turbulent 60's and so many lives were lost during the vietnam conflict so many young soldiers who lost their lives the ultimate sacrifice for this country we will remember them forever
Homo Sapiens, being more intelligent than Neadethals(?), presumably killed them off. The sooner we get our heads round the fact that we a a viscous, blood-loving, war-mongering, survive at any cost - type of creature, the sooner we can get over this sickly, smooltzy, conscientious being crap & what good christians /muslims/ or whatever, and happy get on developing newer weapons of mass destruction. Embrace it - its evolution at its cutting edge. It can't last forever.
70 years in the great singer, songwriter Donavan sang the song Atlantis The Missing Continent today after 2010 years in the fight for the Planet Earth does not disappear as well, motivated by the actions of man himself, causing global warming and help save the little what remains of Nature and Life.
This song touches me so deeply. It saddens me to be a youth in this day and age. Not enough people care about the issues that matter and youth have no voice. Music doesn't mean anything, its just a fashion statement. The human race has so much potential but it's just going to waste as we waste what we've been given. A beautiful planet with plentiful resources that are being wasted.
But there are many people who fight against the neoliberal logic of "there is no alternative"! Latin America today is showing rhe way! "Don't mourn, organize!", that's what Joe Hill said, before he was killed. Look him up in the dictionary, your friend, Juergen Koester from Munich, Germany.,
@gameboard1 That is so much what I've been thinking for such a long time! You found the right words that I've been trying to find so hard. You're cool!
ok, Donovan did a great cover of this song, but he didn't write it. Buffy Sainte-Marie did and her version (the original) is much better.
Donovan was cool though, thats why he did a cover of an Cree woman's song.

dissing soldiers? I think so. sounds sweet, though. So does John Lennon, til you listen to the words.
kenema68 1 year ago
@kenema68 this song isnt dissing the soldiers, its more a question on why society seems to need soldiers/warrior constantly.. on both sides
In a way its a lamentation for the the soldier as well.. he knows he shouldnt kill and he knows he always will.
