  • ok, Donovan did a great cover of this song, but he didn't write it. Buffy Sainte-Marie did and her version (the original) is much better.

Donovan was cool though, thats why he did a cover of an Cree woman's song.

  • @wayzey - i have to disagree - as the lyrics say "the orders...come from you and me" - donovan was trying to highlight that although those in power appear to control the soldier, it is in fact us who are responsible, the population who silently allow it to continue, we all have a duty to stop allowing the war machine to destroy others.

  • @charliebuoy125

you hit the nail on the head...dont forget the decision of the soldier though. The decision to pull the trigger is that of the soldier, for they are, ultimately, human beings. Wayzee had it right. But war is on the heads of all that dont actively work against it. If you love your country...work to put an end to war.

  • you should not carry hate - it will only serve to consume you. it will fill you with hurt, hate begets hate, just as violence begets violence. The Germans of today do not represent those of the facist Nazi era.

  • Stil hate Germans for the 40-45 war

  • @leeuwarden52 Oh?You do? Hmm, though they really had no choice? Hitler was a dictator. It's all good, nowadays, to say no to someone with a pen. Say it while your children are at gunpoint. That's what the German population of the time had to deal with. Proud German, Anti-Nazi. By the way, my grandfather married a German lady. He was in the US Marine corps, fighting in the pacific. So the only one who should be hated, is the people like you.

  • Well I guess three people did not get the message of this deep and touching song, that's the reason why the pressed the dislike button.

    Make peace,not war.

  • dissing soldiers? I think so. sounds sweet, though. So does John Lennon, til you listen to the words.

  • @kenema68 this song isnt dissing the soldiers, its more a question on why society seems to need soldiers/warrior constantly.. on both sides

In a way its a lamentation for the the soldier as well.. he knows he shouldnt kill and he knows he always will.

  • es ist der hammer....heul;((;)))

  • was 20 when he recorded this

  • Geiles Lied

    Gruss Waschel

  • great.......

  • Every time I listen to this song I break down and cry because it reminds so much of the turbulent 60's and so many lives were lost during the vietnam conflict so many young soldiers who lost their lives the ultimate sacrifice for this country we will remember them forever

    lieder in deutsch covern musste.

  • cooles lied

  • Homo Sapiens, being more intelligent than Neadethals(?), presumably killed them off. The sooner we get our heads round the fact that we a a viscous, blood-loving, war-mongering, survive at any cost - type of creature, the sooner we can get over this sickly, smooltzy, conscientious being crap & what good christians /muslims/ or whatever, and happy get on developing newer weapons of mass destruction. Embrace it - its evolution at its cutting edge. It can't last forever.

  • I love this song.... I listened to it in History of Rock class since we are learning abou anti-war songs

  • i love this song we dealt with it in engish *-*

  • oh, what a wonderful song. Fantastic!! Thank you very much for sharing. 5*****

  • My dad went to see Donovan play @ the Isle of Wright, wish I was there too :(

  • @20nothing

technically... you were there in his balls perhaps?

  • Flowers, incense, LSD, Pot, free love.................

    Ah,the summer of '66;

What a great time to be alive.

    Sometimes, I wonder;

    How'd I survive !

  • Where is your doorway now, back to that feeling?

  • Another great Donovan song

  • 70 years in the great singer, songwriter Donavan sang the song Atlantis The Missing Continent today after 2010 years in the fight for the Planet Earth does not disappear as well, motivated by the actions of man himself, causing global warming and help save the little what remains of Nature and Life.

  • 120,000 years, and nothing learned...

  • Beautiful

  • Nice song man and a great picture.

  • true...

    Bleibe dabei: Ami go home

  • Yankees raus! Ich bin dabei!

  • LoL. German. Ja Ja. :P j.k.

  • He-he...man...I mean crying...

    Such a great song...great! War is never,NEVER a good thing...it's just awful...

  • The best folk song ever, one of the greatest folk singers ever, and how true the lyrics are.

  • Brings back some good old memories of the 60's when I grew up....Great song.

  • I love this song and the lyrics are so true!

  • We should send this song to leaders all over the world.

  • this song is so calming....

  • This is the best version and I bought it when it was released years ago. I still have it. The words mean so much. Well done to Buffy for that.

    Bring back flower power

  • "the only battle worth waging is peace." albert camus

  • There are always copies and covers. Don't let Donovan lose the credit! You can jazz it up all you want but don't forget the where and the why

  • I LOVE this Song, its a beautiful, bitter sweet truthful and raw piece...thank You Donovan

  • very sad...

war is the stupidest thing the human mind came up with....

    its awful...

  • I really don't get it either. But I do know why. It really is very simple. Sadly. I can't say it all here. John LennonLover? Really?

  • This song touches me so deeply. It saddens me to be a youth in this day and age. Not enough people care about the issues that matter and youth have no voice. Music doesn't mean anything, its just a fashion statement. The human race has so much potential but it's just going to waste as we waste what we've been given. A beautiful planet with plentiful resources that are being wasted.

  • But there are many people who fight against the neoliberal logic of "there is no alternative"! Latin America today is showing rhe way! "Don't mourn, organize!", that's what Joe Hill said, before he was killed. Look him up in the dictionary, your friend, Juergen Koester from Munich, Germany.,

  • I agree totally.

  • @gameboard1 then try and do something about it

  • @gameboard1 That is so much what I've been thinking for such a long time! You found the right words that I've been trying to find so hard. You're cool!

  • @gameboard1 how poetic...

  • why does Donovan say LeBau instead of Dachau as Buffy St. marie originally sang and wrote? What's up with that?

  • I bought this in 1965 and still have it.Words so true. The wars still go on.

  • grat song. somewhat sad

  • War is sad.

Sadder still are the people who truly believe something good can come from a thing as awful as war.

  • Unfortunately we have to fight sometimes. Imagine a world were no one had stood against Hitler.

    It's a brilliant song

  • If the German people had stood against Hitler prior to him invading Poland, no war had started.

Standing up to someone does not need war.

  • Real Gandhi

  • Rofl.. no. Gandhi was a great man. He is a singer ;)

  • @dn1124 yes , if you also listen to "where have all the flowers gone" by the kingston trio it also has the same impact its a tear jerker
