Back in the 70's when I played B3 organ for Gene Hughes & the Casinos we went to Jewel Studios in Cincinnati and I met Lonnie for the first time. He was a great guy & guitar player........
This is just TOO great for words! Starts at a "full tilt" and then gets better from there...Wow!. I'm old, but I'm going the other way on the keyboard. Thats a "wide open" B-3 and I think it really adds to the performance...I think it is absolutely perfect...for my money almost a "lesson" on how to "back" a couple of guitars players. One man's opinion
A good friend of mine owns one of LM flying V's they are best friends we have jammed many times I love the sound that comes out of that guitar through my old fender amp!!
How could it get any better? LM and SRV-WTF? LM playing the #5 Gibson Flying V with the first ever WHAMMY! bar. That FN guitar worth more that all I own combined times 10. SRV said LM was the first album he ever bought......enough said!
Wow this brings back memories. Wham! was a big hit in Cincinnati where I grew up. We saw him at his teen club in Newport or Covington KY in 1967 when some underage drunks came in and he threw them out personally, and admonished the crowd that he was trying to run a decent teen club. Thanks and best wishes to LM a great guitarist - sorry you weren't playing that night!!
Indiana's Own.. Lonnie played like this when he was 16 years old at tippecanoe is harrison.. I have reel to reel tapes of Lonnie playing back then.. Amazing he does still have it...
Does anbody have Lonnie Mack's "Why"? This is one of the most powerful singing performances I've ever heard. I don't believe it ever made much of a dent on the charts which is a great tragedy. And I haven't found it on YouTube. He starts low and calm and by the end he is tearing his vocal chords out. It's one of those songs that you have to let out a deep breath after it's over.
@RAAdams WHY is actually STOP :) i've known Lonnie for awhile , he lives here by me and if you listen to the two..they are same with the exception of the word STOP and WHY he got tired of singing the same song over n over and changed the word ....as his story goes...
look a SRV EYEballing lonnies hands during his solo's. SRV,"you don't even know it, but every lick you just played is programmed into my brain now, thanks!"
The first live band I ever saw was Lonnie's in 1963. This is the song they opened with. The bass turned my knees to water; the original Explorer prototype through two Dual Showman amps. This was the first record Stevie bought. Lonnie is one of the great unsung legends of rock and roll; and this IS rock and roll, boys and girls.
@Albertmerinen I checked it out. Great version, great player. He did his own style but still kept alot of the elements of Lonnie's original version of Wham.
you can definitely see mack's influence on stevie. ya know, a person would actually be lead to believe that it's actually OK to have your influences showing in your work. go figure! i don't believe in becoming a "cookie cutter" of somebody else, which is what i know the "industry" is trying to 'fight' against, but it puts WAY to much pressure on people to sound like everything they do was just, i don't know, beamed into them by aliens or something. i don't know. just a thought. ;)
@MissingSJersey Nervous? There's not a player in the world that could make Stevie nervous. He's in heaven having Lonnie up there playing with him. His mentor. Stevie said himself that it was Lonnie "that really taught me to play from the heart". Listen @ 3:37 when Stevie's tone changes, he's not nervous he's bouncing. And when Stevie bounces it's magic.
good tune, at least stevie isn't showing off, like his usual self. he's with a master, and lonnie would smoke his one dimensional copycat self back to texas.
@rorygg1 This show wasn't about Stevie showing off.. He could play with anyone and not worry about being smoked. But, this was about him having the opportunity to jam with Lonnie and to show folks who may not know Lonnie just who and what he is. In that, he did a great job. They both swapped lead breaks and had an overall great time. if the two of them are happy, the crowd gets a great show.
Incorrect. "Wham" is the original version by Lonnie Mack. "Double Whammy" is the version which is on Lonnie's "Strike Like Lightning" album, featuring both Lonnie and Stevie Ray. Hence the adjective "double".
@surfco hey dick mucnh i don't realy listen to lonnie mack but i fuckin love stevie ray and to play with him was a dream so i have learned 28 of his songs solo and all and played over 150 gigs down south some of witch stevie played himself so go fuck your self
What's happening to time? The 22 years between "Memphis" & "Strike Like Lightning" seemed like 100 years. It's been another -25- years since "Strike..", yet somehow it seems like it came out yesterday.
That 'V' is incredible! It must be damn near priceless at this point in time!!! i got a buddy, great guitarist...says he isn't fond of V's...says they are too 'metal'..whatev, country boy! true...but they're unusual for Chris to have on his set. I saw SRV 8X. I am sure some people are amazed at just how much Stevie worshiped Lonnie Mack. Lonnie told a story about how Stevie showed up one day with a new air conditioner for Lonnie's house. He tried to install it himself and had the thing all screwed up. But it was the thought that counted!!! RIP Stevie.

I am sure some people are amazed at just how much Stevie worshiped Lonnie Mack. Lonnie told a story about how Stevie showed up one day with a new air conditioner for Lonnie's house. He tried to install it himself and had the thing all screwed up. But it was the thought that counted!!! RIP Stevie.

Does anyone know where there might be a performance by these two doing "If You Have To Know"?
