  • Back in the 70's when I played B3 organ for Gene Hughes & the Casinos we went to Jewel Studios in Cincinnati and I met Lonnie for the first time. He was a great guy & guitar player........

  • Jesus Flying Fuck!

  • oh yes 1:47

  • Holy mother....

  • This is just TOO great for words! Starts at a "full tilt" and then gets better from there...Wow!. I'm old, but I'm going the other way on the keyboard. Thats a "wide open" B-3 and I think it really adds to the performance...I think it is absolutely perfect...for my money almost a "lesson" on how to "back" a couple of guitars players. One man's opinion

  • great. legendary, and all the rest, but i think those keyboards are too loud. it drowns the guitars. am i wrong? too old? or right on?

  • @allaboutdatGDA You are right on

  • R.I.P. LONNIE MACK WE MISS YOU MAN AND RAYVAUGHN

  • @yungsu100 You might want to wait until the man is actually gone. Far from resting in peace, Lonnie is still alive and kickin' it down Tennessee way.

  • @yungsu100 Lonnie is an incredible player , a pioneer in blues rock and roll. He is a fantastic singer too if you have not heard him

  • @yungsu100 dummy.......

  • wow. @2.05 for why it's known as a whammy bar! awesome.

  • Music like that and knowing what talent it takes makes the hairs stand on end on the back of my neck!

  • Wonderful!!!

  • This is great, where is Lonnie Mack now...What happened to him?

  • A good friend of mine owns one of LM flying V's they are best friends we have jammed many times I love the sound that comes out of that guitar through my old fender amp!!

  • wheres it show srv weldin a axe .

  • How could it get any better? LM and SRV-WTF? LM playing the #5 Gibson Flying V with the first ever WHAMMY! bar. That FN guitar worth more that all I own combined times 10. SRV said LM was the first album he ever bought......enough said!

  • Wow this brings back memories. Wham! was a big hit in Cincinnati where I grew up. We saw him at his teen club in Newport or Covington KY in 1967 when some underage drunks came in and he threw them out personally, and admonished the crowd that he was trying to run a decent teen club. Thanks and best wishes to LM a great guitarist - sorry you weren't playing that night!!

  • Absolutely wonderful song i wish the Audio was just a bit better otherwise a million thanks for putting this on

  • saw them in Atlanta new years eve 198? Goosebumps a risin!!!!!

  • @sylstimmbowman 1986/1987. Man you are so fucking lucky

  • GREAT footage. Thanks for posting it.

  • Indiana's Own.. Lonnie played like this when he was 16 years old at tippecanoe is harrison.. I have reel to reel tapes of Lonnie playing back then.. Amazing he does still have it...

  • Holy Shit Boys!!!!!!!! It don't get any better than this.

  • Does anbody have Lonnie Mack's "Why"? This is one of the most powerful singing performances I've ever heard. I don't believe it ever made much of a dent on the charts which is a great tragedy. And I haven't found it on YouTube. He starts low and calm and by the end he is tearing his vocal chords out. It's one of those songs that you have to let out a deep breath after it's over.

  • @RAAdams WHY is actually STOP :) i've known Lonnie for awhile , he lives here by me and if you listen to the two..they are same with the exception of the word STOP and WHY he got tired of singing the same song over n over and changed the word ....as his story goes...

  • egdhj,kffxdzgftwzrlg9w34552dgad sorry, I had to clean my half my brain off the computer key board. It just exploded you know...

  • Total frickin' SWEETNESS. Damn, this is MUSIC!

  • love the V with a bigsby, its like a flying W!

  • Yeahhh this is fucking great !!

  • No words needed !

  • the front of my head has turned into a sludge of goo

  • the famous VHS of SRV and Albert King has been released on DVD!!!! just thought i would give it a shout out

  • 2:50-3:00

    Totally taken from Scuttle Buttin'.

  • @dave8386 What a ridiculous comment. Two totally different songs that sound nothing alike.

  • @dave8386 chicken pickin

  • look a SRV EYEballing lonnies hands during his solo's. SRV,"you don't even know it, but every lick you just played is programmed into my brain now, thanks!"

  • Who in the world dislikes something like that? freakin' trollers!

    Cheers V

  • I wish they would turn the reverb effect off.

  • @Subhuman80 Vibrato!

  • gotta love them leslie speakers

  • Two Gods together. Thanks for posting this. Was a huge SRV fan and loved lonnie since 1963 and Memphis.

  • WOW this was Stevie's first record he brought, what a blast for both of them to play together

  • The first live band I ever saw was Lonnie's in 1963. This is the song they opened with. The bass turned my knees to water; the original Explorer prototype through two Dual Showman amps. This was the first record Stevie bought. Lonnie is one of the great unsung legends of rock and roll; and this IS rock and roll, boys and girls.

  • Two of the a'all-time; best.....

  • Way way way too much Leslie on his guitar.

  • lonnie mack can play man jeez what a combo

  • Albert Järvinen, a Finnish guitarist(R.I.P.) had a version of this called "wham". Check that one out.

  • @Albertmerinen I checked it out. Great version, great player. He did his own style but still kept alot of the elements of Lonnie's original version of Wham.

    Great find, Thanks

  • you can definitely see mack's influence on stevie. ya know, a person would actually be lead to believe that it's actually OK to have your influences showing in your work. go figure! i don't believe in becoming a "cookie cutter" of somebody else, which is what i know the "industry" is trying to 'fight' against, but it puts WAY to much pressure on people to sound like everything they do was just, i don't know, beamed into them by aliens or something. i don't know. just a thought. ;)

  • Is it my imagination or does SRV seem a little... nervous??

  • @MissingSJersey Nervous? There's not a player in the world that could make Stevie nervous. He's in heaven having Lonnie up there playing with him. His mentor. Stevie said himself that it was Lonnie "that really taught me to play from the heart". Listen @ 3:37 when Stevie's tone changes, he's not nervous he's bouncing. And when Stevie bounces it's magic.

    And Lonnie, a true master.

  • good tune, at least stevie isn't showing off, like his usual self. he's with a master, and lonnie would smoke his one dimensional copycat self back to texas.

  • @rorygg1 This show wasn't about Stevie showing off.. He could play with anyone and not worry about being smoked. But, this was about him having the opportunity to jam with Lonnie and to show folks who may not know Lonnie just who and what he is. In that, he did a great job. They both swapped lead breaks and had an overall great time. if the two of them are happy, the crowd gets a great show.

  • Sick!

  • This is sick!! [ in a good way]

  • I saw Lonnie at the Club Lingerie in Hollywood when was on tour for his Strike like lightning tour in mid 80's. Dude was awesome.

  • Just plain incredible.Love this to pieces.

  • for all you begginers out there. this is a great exercise to get you fingers warmed up!!

  • @boomboxbadboy1

    most excellent advice!!!

  • did he say fastest or fattest gutiar player

  • my head just fell off

  • @joandana yeah..that happens with this caliber of music.

  • aahhh!!! let down!!

good guitar playin like that should never stop

and here i thot i was just gonna see a clip of how the V sounded (which by the way is AWESOME) but instead i get this!

    genius

  • holy shit i do believe my face just melted! kudos to one hell of a video

  • I wish they had'nt stopped. They were just getting warmed up near the end, it seemed. "WAIT!! DON'T STOP NOW!" (sigh)

  • this song isn't even called "double whammy" it's "wham" by lonnie mack

  • Incorrect. "Wham" is the original version by Lonnie Mack. "Double Whammy" is the version which is on Lonnie's "Strike Like Lightning" album, featuring both Lonnie and Stevie Ray. Hence the adjective "double".

  • @TheManAmongMan Exactly. I bought the cd last week ;)

  • @TheManAmongMan so there!

  • @TheManAmongMan Correct.

  • @nick12921 In your face, noob. LOL!

  • @surfco hey dick mucnh i don't realy listen to lonnie mack but i fuckin love stevie ray and to play with him was a dream so i have learned 28 of his songs solo and all and played over 150 gigs down south some of witch stevie played himself so go fuck your self

  • @nick12921 In your face, NOOB. LOL!

  • @nick12921 YOU GOT OWNED!!!! SHIIIIIIIT

  • this is kinda hard to beat here

    whoa

  • Message to strat838e - Absolutely! I can't get enough of Stevie! And with his hero Lonnie Mack! Perfection!

  • Dioses

  • Ahhhhhhhhh "Strike like Lightning" bar far the most played CD in my collection. Wore out 2 copies on tape.

Has anyone come across a video of Lonnie playing "Hound Dog Man" from Strike? Love that song.

Love the side shot of Stevie at 3:57, the signature Stevie bounce.

  • What's happening to time? The 22 years between "Memphis" & "Strike Like Lightning" seemed like 100 years. It's been another -25- years since "Strike..", yet somehow it seems like it came out yesterday.

  • Is Lonnie Mack still alive ?

  • @AlexisGuitar94

Lonnie Mack is 68yo and still playing.

  • @AlexisGuitar94 yes he is alive and well :)

  • Watch at 3:50 when Stevie shuffels in beside his mentor. you can see the respect Stevie has for Lonnie.

Tanks for posting this. Absolutly incredable they were together.

  • That 'V' is incredible! It must be damn near priceless at this point in time!!! i got a buddy, great guitarist...says he isn't fond of V's...says they are too 'metal'..whatev, country boy! They are known more for rock & metal, but his is the number 7 made! He and Albert King prove that notion completely wrong!

  • Yeah right! I bought a V for this reason. I'm mostly a blues/rock player and I wanna prove Flying Vs aren't metal guitars! The V came in 1958 and the metal grew up in the early 70's.

  • Lonnie's V is number 0007. And he plays the mess out of it too!! Great show and a great guy !

  • message to all... aren't you glad to be alive to witness all this? I am

  • Yes. I will drink to that comment. Wherever you are. Cheers from a UK blues fan.

  • SRV and Lonnie Mack. Stupendous.

They's be nothing without Leslie tone cabinets though.

  • 3:05 "can you hear me knocking" lol..

  • I saw the 'only for preview" thingie and I only preview it once a day

  • Ha ha. A good caution ;-)

  • @strat8383 Well I'd say that's what the doctor fucking ordered!

  • Un desmadre! Espectacular!!

  • SRV is the best, this video shows it, nobody compares to him!

  • RIP

  • one of the friggin greatest youtube videos ive ever seen. ever. they were so ON!!

  • Must really be a big kick to perform with someone you grew up listening to. SRV got to meet most of his heroes

  • true. i can't help but wonder what would have happened if SRV played with Jimi.

i guess the fabric of space and time would have melted

  • @mavericknoone We wouldnt have even been born if that happened ..... The world would have done an immediate shift back to the dawn of time and restarted from year 1

  • @Jake101686 now don't go all Stephen Hawking on me :P

  • @mavericknoone haha of course

  • @mavericknoone I wonder the same thing! I've always wished with all my heart that it had happened because that would have been amazing.

  • @mavericknoone the most amazin guitar playing you will ever see

  • @Sly6035 i know. he is the reason why i started playing guitar

    Peace

  • @mavericknoone and what if janice sang.... woooowwwwwzzzzzeeerrrrrzzzzzzzzz

  • @mavericknoone time and space would of collapsed on itself.

we'd only be left with Stevie and Jimi jamming together for ever and ever!

  • @mavericknoone Totally. ;)

  • ... and Tommy ALWAYS nails it

  • Many thanks, saw Lonnie Mack at the Palais in Newcastle the evening of Stevies death, still remains one of the most memorable gigs I've seen.Long live the blues!!

  • You can tell by their playing styles that they both were largely influenced by Albert King

  • Badazzzzzzz!!!!

  • O.M.G! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this!

  • what's up with Chris's set ? those toms are gigantic!

  • Those are toms of the 80's, my friend :P

  • true...but they're unusual for Chris to have on his set. I saw SRV 8X. Chris always had conventional sized drums, not these floor toms used as rack toms...maybe it was a short lived phase he was going through...maybe this set was a backline rental for whatever this program was, The American Caravan...

  • Yeah, it's like a new comic "Where's Whipper?"

  • Lord everybody is good here ... Lonnie was a good friend to Stevie .. They both knew how to kid around with a guitar .. and if your a world champion at it you understand that is is easy to do actually ..

Watch Chuck Berry .. He does it with one hand ... nothing special at all ...

it's all just a gig ... this is not science .. its just a guitar ...

  • u can ask the guy who who made this vid i cant give you a right answer enless i ask my dad cause right now i dont really know

  • lonnie is my great uncle =) lonnie did teach stevie to paly gutair i i think

  • Comment removed

  • Lonnie taught guitar playing to Stevie?

  • no ,he influenced him a great deal though.

  • Thanks for posting this! I saw Lonnie Mack open for Stevie Ray Vaughan at Dorton Arena in Raleigh, NC back in 1986. The acoustics in that buiding suck, but I still count it as one of the best shows I've seen. RIP, Stevie.

  • lonnie is my uncle =D my grandma lovesthe oreo cookie blues

  • Saw Lonnie in Ames, Iowa in 1986.

Great show! Been a fan ever since.

  • I know his lil brother in austin texas bobbie i play sax with him occasionally

  • I'm one of the lucky few who grew up in Cincy, when Lonnie played in the region. Drank many a beer seeing him. Always saw SRV when he was close. RIP Stevie.

  • someone 2 lower down the volume of the keys...

  • clever title! double whammy. two of the greats of guitar

  • I to used to party in Friendship Indiana when Lonnie WAS the show. wasted days and Wasted nights, but not when Lonnie was jammin'

  • This is so great!Nice post!! Thx!!

  • The 1st record SRV bought was Lonnie Mack.He played it so many times that his father got mad & broke it.

Lonnie had tremendous influence on Stevie when he was a kid.

SRV tried to boost up Lonnie's carrier when he was struggling.

  • @Bluezking I read the biography and with all respect his father sounds like an asshole!! He went out and bought another copy, undeterred. I didn't know him so I don't know if he was a nice person or not but he sounds like the type who didn't give up easily and that is admirable

  • Your right Robotey1, SRV found Lonnie in a trailer park drinking burbon and eating oreo cookies. Lonnie was SRV's idol, so he ponyed up for Lonnie's 1983 album "Strike like Lighting" The rest is history. SRV is the absolute GOD of guitar, but Lonnie is in a strong fight for 2nd.

  • Lots of people don't know it but SRV saved Lonnie's bacon! He was at a real low & Stevie bailed him out - what a great thing to do. How many "stars" would go to the trouble without doing it for a publicity stunt?

  • Anyone would do it to save their idol.

  • GO LONNIE, GO!!!

  • Lonnie Mack, my favorite blues guitarist!! or country, or whatever kind!!

  • This is from the pilot episode of a mooted "American Caravan" TV series that Lonnie would have hosted with various guests each episode; alas the networks did not pick it up and so this is the only one produced. But it is certainly a killer with SRV guesting! I've had it on video since shortly after it was taped, thanks to "a friend in the industry with connections"; apparently copies must have made their way around sufficient for someone to have posted this to You Tube, which is fine by me.

  • Two of my favorite blues guitarists together in one!

  • saw them together at threadgills at the end of 6th in austin mid seventies....two of the best......

  • I am sure some people are amazed at just how much Stevie worshiped Lonnie Mack. Lonnie told a story about how Stevie showed up one day with a new air conditioner for Lonnie's house. He tried to install it himself and had the thing all screwed up. But it was the thought that counted!!! RIP Stevie.

  • I have to admitt that this is the first time I've seen Lonnie Mack.........I'm thuroughly impressed. SRV is amazing as usuall.

  • i just love how stevie smiles in amazment when lonnie mack pulls one of those amazing solos

  • Does anyone know where there might be a performance by these two doing "If You Have To Know"?

  • Great, they should have been making more music together.

  • Fantastic

  • I'm witnessing something awesome right here.

  • Where did you get this?! this is great!!!

  • Where did you get this?! come on...!
