  • thorpe cheats, he has flippers for feet :P

  • i don't get why he bends alot in his knees but still remains to swim so fast :S

  • Did you film this with a toaster? XD just playing, its really amazing to watch great swimmers cause they make it look so easy. But when you up on the blocks and its your turn you realize how much skill and practice it takes to be as good as them.

  • this video laggs alot

  • Please tell us with wich camera did you fim ?

  • That's a eight-beat kick; very uncommon...

  • thats a 6beat kick

  • is this what a six-beat kick looks like?

  • You being in university DOES change the facts.. I was talking about high school level varsity/ year round (ages 15-18).

For Seahawks year round team, which had 3 swimmers 18-under go to Olympic Trials

Main set (for ages 15-17, NOT the senior group which is like 18 yr olds) would be like 15x200 (yards), at paces from 2:50 (for slower pple) to 2:00. And then you have other sets to fill up the rest of practice (kicking/drill/etc.)

And these are the fastest highschool kids in Northern California.

  • is the best

  • Thorpe was man enough to admit he was wrong and apologize. Your Gary Hall Jr though said "Australia will be smashed like guitars" in the 2000 4x100 mens freestyle then cried like the bitch he his when Australia laid it on the USA.

  • Thrope rules :P to bad hes not in Beijing :(

  • no offense guys but i seriously doubt you guys do even 10k on varsity. you realize it takes about 3-4 hours to swim 10k?

if you're as fast as ian thorpe maybe, but high school level no way.

i'm not doubting your sets are badass hard, but obviously we all like to exaggerate how much yardage we are doing

=> even if you do mornings and then afternoon, your yardage would only be 10k-13k total, and that's 4 hours, and that's 1-2 times a week only.

  • Don't try to sound knowledgeable if you're not. 10k, 3 to 4 hours? Hah! That's embarrassing. Especially if you're talking yards.

During training camp, I was doing an average of 7+k per workout with my varsity team, twice a day, long course meters. That's 15k per day, for 11 days straight. Also, I did one workout (by myself) that was 6 x 1500 on 19 minutes with a 300 warm down. That's 9300 meters in under 2 hours (again, long course meters).

I'm in university, but that doesn't change the facts.

  • 9300 meters in under 2 hours? Who are you trying to kid? If you were doing 9300 meters under 2 hours you would be in contention for a gold medal at the Olympics. The 2008 10K gold medalist Maarten van der Weijden won with a time of 1:51:51 and you are claiming to do that during training camp?

  • @barchetta575m 6x1500 - 2@19:40, 2@19:20, 2@19:00, then 300 warm-down @ 1:20 pace. Do the fucking math then call me a liar again.

In contention for a gold medal? I wish. Truth is, that's the reality of the sport: so many swimmers out there kicking their asses in workout day in and day out that don't have even the hope of making it to the Olympics. 1:51 is fucking fast for a 10K OPEN WATER.

Don't fucking call me a liar about my own exploits.

  • Those are splits..That's like saying, "I did a 8:20 2-mile run by doing 8 splits at 1:02.5 each" Work outs do not work that way. You cannot aggregate your work outs to come up with a fantastic overall distance. And yes, 1:51 is a FANTASTIC time for an open water swim.

    Triathlete

  • @barchetta575m Wtf, Mr. TRIATHLETE, just get out of here. Do you even know how a swimming workout works? Those are not splits dipshit, those are INTERVALS. That means I have to finish the distance before the interval is over, and whatever is left is rest. Then I leave on the interval. When the interval goes down to 19:00 ideally I want to be around 18:00 a rep. Get it now or will I have to explain some more?

  • Split, interval, they essentially have the same meaning. Terminology is slightly different in every sport but the idea is the same. You are taking breaks between each workout. That resting period allows your body to relax and quickly recover itself for the next 'DRILL' or 'SET' as many swimmers like to call them.

  • @barchetta575m I'm going to have to explain everything to you. An interval is the time you go on. However much you are under it determines how much rest you get between reps. A SPLIT is a time taken for a determined fraction of the distance. An interval and a split are not the same, no matter the terminology. And a DRILL and SET are not the same either.

And you're changing the subject, which was whether or not I did 9300 long course meters in a 2 hour workout, and I did, so just stfu already.

  • Don't take it up the rear mate, funny how you tried so hard to impress me. Anyways, you can lie to me about doing 9300 in 2 hours or an hour or 20 minutes, in the end, you just lying to yourself. Have a great 9300 meter workout, just do yourself a favor and...slow down ok? Don't want Michael Phelps to lose his job or do you? : )

  • @barchetta575m I feel sorry for you. Such a bad swimmer that your mind can't even conceive the notion of someone accomplishing something beyond your belief. That's unfortunate. I know what I've done, and I don't give a shit whether some two bit worthless triathlete on the internet doesn't believe me.

Also swimming isn't a job, buddy.

Oh, by the way, this year at training camp I did a 21 100 short course meter workout in 6 hours. Try to imagine that. Still no Olympics in sight though.

  • I'm just messing with you man. haha I myself have accomplish feats other people do not believe. You are right, I don't care if people don't believe me. My strongest background is cycling followed by running and I rarely train at a pool. Hence triathlon swimming legs are mostly open water I do most of my training at open water such as lakes and ocean. I am actually looking forward to making the Olympics at 2016 Rio for Triathlon, 6 years to train so well see. Goodluck mate and keep training hard!

  • @barchetta575m I'm familiar enough with triathlon to know that swimming is definitely less important than the other two legs! Did a bit of cycling racing when I was younger--loved the races, but didn't care for the training so I stopped. And I couldn't run to save my life. I'm a water animal.

Good luck with your goal, and I hope never to meet you on the internet again.

  • He might mean yards, but that also is pretty ridiculous

  • thousands of yards as in 6k-11k yards is good don't get me wrong but to build muscle AND endurance you need to do about 4-5k with a higher stress level such as my workout monday last week 10-400im's in a certain time

its gets u better but it fucking sucks balls to do shit like that!!!! =]

  • size 17 !!!!!!!UNREAL !!!!!!!!

  • Look at his feet. They are flippers! Not fair!

  • @mwpoole yeah they do look like flippers don't they?

  • what an idiot, get off of youtube. swimming is hardwork i swim as a freshman in highschool. we have to swim 6000 meters every practice. lets see you try to swim that, if you cant say anything nice get off of youtube.

  • Wow. you must be really good. On a good day all we do is 3km... far out. 6km is further than i can run!

And I agree, if you only have nasty stuff to say, don't say it at all

I think swimming, and Ian Thorpe are incredible. It's not fair to discount all the hard work he put in to his swimming career by dissing the sport. Be nice.

  • Wait. you said you were a freshman - that's like year 10 or something in Australia??? And your number is 93 on your name. I think we're in the same year. And I swim with school. And you swim, like double the amount we do... Far out. That's heaps...

...like I said. Swimming is a challenging and respectable sport. Don't diss it.

  • Yeah, thanks, it is very hard to swim that amount. especially since it is my first season of ever doing a sport. Im 15 years old, and in 9th grade. I like swimming a lot, even though it is very hard, and I hope to make it to the olympics someday. I' ll bet that idiot that posted the nasty comments can't even swim 1 meter, let alone do a flip turn. Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them a lot.

  • yeah 6,000m is a good distance to work with throughout high school training

  • yes, but in most of our season we usually get into about 11,000 m. a practice. i forgot to mention that, but it helps me get stronger

  • during the regular swim season i get mabey 5k on jv. on varsity i get close to 10k. in post season i do as much as 12k-13k. most of which is fly...=/. i was sore for a very, very long time. wrecked my back and shoulders too.

  • jv is for pussies.

  • lol

  • Why do you have to knock somebody else's sport?

  • im not knocking it, im improving it :)

  • 12 year-olds can't improve anything.

  • aha ha

  • If it's boring, why are you watching it?

  • cus it was on the most viewed list for a brief period

  • He watches it and hates it because he can't do it...

  • you see, swimming is really a great sport!

in swimming, when it comes to the race and you stand there all by yourself, then it's only YOU who can make yourself a winner or a looser. In soccer, you can can say you were on the winnerteam, but you just sat on the bench next to your coach watching your team mates play.. YOU didn't won, the TEAM did..

i belive swimming is a great sport, and if you dont like it, then you shuldn't post shit like that!

    thanks

  • just delete theise 2 posts, i placed them the wrong place, i'm really sorry !

  • amen

  • @undeadman2 Wel...its because swimming is an independent sport and soccer is not.

  • yea, thats why the best of them are so famous.

  • He's an idiot, there's nothing we can do...

  • You're an idiot.

  • his arms move faster than a second

  • MOTORBOAT KICK..

  • he got flippers built into his feet lolz

  • Yes, they are strange. Please trust me on this one, I know.

  • not strange, just packed with muscle

  • Neogeneticgrowth, he's packed with muscles and skills. Muscle builders are packed wif muscles but they sink and can't swim. Thorpy has a perfect balance of it, therefore it'snot just muscles

  • not really, although their is a definite technique to swimming the only thing that will make you faster after a few years of training is working the primary muscles you use for your chosen stroke.

of course the best way to do this is to swim that stroke... although a bit of wieghts will help

swimming is factored by: a. how well you trained your body and b. your bodys structure, only in early years of swimming competitively will technique come into it

  • I'm guessing you're not a swimmer?

  • flippers , not feet

  • it's thorpe! he only started wearing the suit at sydney 2000 trials. i think this is pan pacs 99 or comm games 98. it's obviously thorpe's stroke style. Also, hackett only ever breathes to his right side, whereas thorpe breathes to both sides - as shown here.

  • actually the person in the video only breathes to their left.. not both sides

  • it has to be grant b/c thats the suit he wore and thats exactly his style of arm movement

  • im pretty sure thats grant hackett b/c of the style and suit

  • It looks like Grant to me!

  • It's not Hackett, it's Thorpe.

  • That was because his feet are huge

  • strange legs!!?? the legs should kick like that you pull legs straight up and then smash legs to bottom. thats so perfect swimming!

  • He is not perfect there is a mistake he always does. Now dont get all fussy and start talking shit about me because I support THorpe 100% (Being Australian myself) He looks at his hands creating a curve on his back ultimatley slowing him down.

  • Thorpe usually breathes to his right. This guy here is breathing to his left. Are you sure this is Thorpe?

  • He's perfect.. except it almost looks like he's hitting the water flat-handed there?

  • No offense but was that Ian Thorpe? I mean he always wear a black suit...

  • only from 2000 onwards did he wear the black suit. I think this is the '99 pan pacs 400m

  • i didnt knew that

    Thanks

  • I think this is Grant Hackett...

  • `12344567890-==]

  • Have you never learned how to write?

  • I dont think so...Definitely looks like Thorpe's kick.

  • no strange legs... for gods sake...! he's perfect... i qould llike to like him!!

  • y slow motion..?

  • there was no strange legs; everything was perfect
