Yes - normal contrails CAN last for hours. I grew up in a rural area, and farmers have been saying since at least the early 1960s (since airline jets have become more prevalent) how normal jet contrails can turn into clouds the last for many hours (and diminishing the sunlight).

After all, contrails are made out of the exact same thing clouds are made from, so why wouldn't they persist for hours under the proper conditions (the same conditions that allow clouds to persist)?
