We got a percheron from a pmu farm in canada. they all closed down and all of the poor horses were destened for slaughter. We bought our Owen before he came down to Texas for slaughter. He came with 28 other horses, and thankfully a rescue took them all in before they left the shelter lot where they were housed over night. Every on of those horses got good homes, but unfortunantly hundreds of horses were sent to slaughter because of the lack of adopters.
cool...we just rescued an awesome percheron from a feedlot damn near starved and deston for slaughter. he is the sweetest, most gentile horse I've ever met. We gave him a FB page: Bishop #980 if you want to follow his progress
Hey shellylanette Horses kick with their front legs, its actualy more worse then any other kick. its striking out to bring you down, lol, my donkey does it to our vet. she was abused before we got her so she is scared of men. Okay, love the video gonna go home and teach it to ALL my donkeys lol :) thanks for posting this!

My suggestion is the striking movements last and the bowing/head-down/submissive moves first.

GEEEEEZ did your parents click at you every time you did something good? now tell me how a Clicker is much safer than a carrot?....teaches the same thing!....to not have the problem of the horse strike at you just because and when you didnt ask him...is called change the way you teach them! not the reward!
@babebeauty20 LOL clicker training is torture haha the difference from the carrot and the clicker is sound learning not hmmmm there is a carrot or some other treat let me strike ! hah i pity any animals you own !
@chrissylove92 Alot of big time trainers use treats like carrots and apples and horse cookies. But thats just the way I`d do it. I don`t like clickers.
@kuniana What the hell did she do to you? She's teaching her horse to do tricks, not neglecting him, what's so wrong with that? He looks pretty happy to me, so what's the problem? And to wish death on someone like that, your fucking psychoatic! GET A LIFE!!
Great job teaching him but that isnt the best way, By standing infront your putting yourself in danger. I always taught my horses from the side. Start with small paws then get bigger and from the side they cant knee or stamp on you by accident
im sure people dont like what im gonna say know..
2:51 isnt enthusiasm.. he should only do that when you want him to..
n treats are bad for your horse 2.. they will get spoiled.. sometimes they wiil bite. just cause they are used to treats and they dont want to wait any longer ..
i know its fun to play with your horse :) but you can treat a horse with just 10 seconds of just nothing.. just stand there for a moment and relax.. they will understand they did the right thing you know!
@MarliekeMarlieke That is enthusiasm. If any animal knows that doing something over and over again means it will get a treat, it will do it. Not to be mean, nasty, or vicious, but just because it wants a treat and knows the behavior is what gets the treat. If someone wants to spoil their horse they are entitled to do so. Unless you're a horse trainer and/or they asked for your advice, then you really shouldn't be trying to tell an adult -or anyone else- what they should do with THEIR horse.
Beautiful horse! Obviously U have a great relationship with him, but IMHO (& I'm sure plenty of ppl won't agree) is that this is a bad trick 2 teach a horse. We enjoy teaching our horses 2 do cute stuff like bowing & dancing, but we never teach them 2 strike out, especially 4 a treat. He will get into a habit of raising his foot if he thinks he can get a carrot from U (as U proved in the video), catching U off guard, resulting in injury. There are safer tricks 2 teach, better 4 U and horse.
@Showannas My thought exactly, but it's her life. I used to sleep next to mine and everyone thought I was crazy for doing that. I am not the most experienced horseman but I personally find this breed to be the most loyal and exclusive to their owner. You will never catch me lying down anywhere near an Arabian. Either way I gotta say that is the biggest horse I have ever seen anyone shake hands with.
@FledglingAnimator Hey, I have a beautiful Arabian gelding, and he's the sweetest thing ever. He's just as calm and loyal as this horse up in the video. Not all Arabians are stupid and wild. It's the people that let them get away with everything and don't work on de-spooking their Arabians that give them a bad name. My horse is the most loyal horse I've ever owned, and he's my first Arabian too. Not all Arabians are crazy. Just saying.
@TheCowgirl001 Haha, stupid and wild. Well I never said they were crazy, but I certainly thought it. There are exceptions to every rule and hopefully you got yourself one of the stolid ones. I was just trying to think of the breed that was most opposite of Perch.
I appreciate the selling points of an Arabian like anyone else. They certainly are one of a kind. Every one I ever dealt with was a character. Either way I guess you gotta talk for your horse cuz they can't do it themselves.
@Showannas well, it's not good on the trick side, but isn't it good that it lifts it's leg? It makes checking it for injuries and stretching it's legs a lot easier......
@Breyerobsessed27 Very true. I did compliment her on the relationship she had with her horse; I'm just saying that I personally would not teach my horse to strike out for a treat as a reward for fear of injury. It IS her horse, she may do whatever she likes. May she have continued success teaching him other wonderful tricks!
hes gorgeous!! i love it how u run around n hes like 'come back with my carrots!' :L my next door neighbour has a 16.2hh percheron who i ride n hes fab. percherons r beautiful horses
My favorite horse. I'm currently in a large animal veterinary class and this is one of three horses I had assigned to do a report on. I love 'em cause their just do huge and awesome looking.
Also, for those who think this is "demeaning" or the animal is being taught to "whore" itself: horses are social, domesticated animals much like dogs. Horses follow the band leader or in the case of human socialized animals, their trainer or owner. Animals are rather pragmatic. An animal wouldn't do something it didn't want to if the positive reinforcement weren't acceptable to them.
Why; no, I don't own a horse and I have a lot of company. I just think she's abusing her horse's love and trust. It's not in horses' nature to obey like poodles. Her treatment of the horse is disrespectful and shows she has no concept of the essential dignity of this animal. She's teaching him to beg and be a whore. She should be satisfied that he is a good horse for riding and make no other demands as a reward.
@Khamomil I dont see the problem, the horse doesnt really care about dignity as long as hes getting a treat, and if he was embarrassed about it he wouldnt do it obviously, its a harmless trick thats supposed to be fun
You might very well call me a wet blanket, but the down side of teaching your horse to give his paw, is that you might find yourself one day with a big black and blue mark on your shin! I know, because I had a boyfriend who had some fun with this, until it wasn't that fun any more.
your not a wet blanket my friend ken had the same fun with teaching his 1600 lb Percheron/Friesian cross to "dance" or bounce back and forth when he hears music you play music there he'd go like a hyper active kid on a smart and final size box of pixie sticx Jumbo Robes and a ice cold case of Jolt Cola Extra Cherry Blast lets just say i for got and he was in the trailer
Well done! :) Looks like you guys have a great relationship. Beautiful horse. I wish more of this info and training ideas were around when I was young and had my horses. Oh well, perhaps someday... :)
such a cute hosey! oh my gosh lol ! so pretty my horse does this trick but shes not quite as big as him shes 15.3hh n shes a warmblood lol she also smiles, kisses, hugs, bows and walks backwards lol and all my tricks were done through monty roberts!
hi:) if you are interested in such techniques as shown in filmiku is cordially invited to read the book.: "Heartland" .. is the best book about horses that I read recently ..:)
and books may be fiction but the methods involved are real and effective ... and are effective because they are written on the basis of another book, "the man who listens to horses" --
M. Roberts, which are documentary and book as far as possible based on the facts (true )...:)
im sorry that you think i made a mistake as i did not!
sorry if my comment upset you, but i was only stating the obvious (about the books being fiction). but i do agree that the methods and techniques are real as i have read all the heartland series and mostly enjoyed them, i also have read "monty roberts the man who listens to horses" he is such an inspiration.

What a sweet connection! It is so clear you love him and take great care of him. A normal horse, no matter how big does not know they are bigger than us and can kill us. I'm sure you already know about being clear about your space especially with these big guys because they can injure unintentionally. Unfortunately, with this trick, the clarity of your space is being blurred and this could be construed by him as inviting him to violate your space. Best regards, Jane
44gatti92 that is a Percheron horse, they are very big,my friend in Kansas owns one,his name is Captin..They are very pretty horses actually and they are VERY gentle giants
i love drafts. we have a big percheron/quarter horse cross named sally at my coaches barn. she's only 7 and she's like a baby sitter to all the little kids. she's such a sweet heart. your boy is beautiful!
I dont know how i could just give him one treat. that is just way to cute for one, i would have to give him like, a lot of treats, not to many though, cuz i wouldnt want him to colic! lol, great job, you should be proud of yourslef and of your horse.
I love the way he looks when you first try it. He's sniffing you and all like "What in the world are you doing to me?!! He's a beautiful horse. I love black Percheron, actually I love all draft breeds.
Aww! Haha, that looks like a lot of fun! What a cute boy you've got, and he must be 3 years older now since that video was posted. =) Glad to see he didn't hoof you, I have a half'n'half Shire/Trakehner mare so I have a little experience with dinnerplate sized hooves too. I give your Toby an A+, and A stands for Apple!
Beautiful, beautifuil horse. Enjoy your good fortune. I have a Percheron filly just under 2 years old. Bought in very bad shape at auction. So, you are fortunate.
Its called I'm pretty sure, "The Tennessee BlackTop rock" Sry if I'm wrong, I love this too! lol Its uaually on the raido sung by a man, the times I've herd it.
hey all you animal freanks, why dont you stop worrying about what somone does to thier own horse. maybie you should try to worry about some humans before you get all high and mighty about somones horse. you nut jobs worry to much.

Yeah it's just bloody useful having a horse to shake hand. I'll bet a buck you're a backyard breeder that doesn't geld useless fugly stallions and ships the resulting and lame horses to kill buyers because hay and euthanasia are expensive.
Sorry if my comment was hasty. I have all the respect for people that adopt/keep lame horses and still provide them a nice life.
However I think "backyard breeding" custom is continued by people who breed bad horse quality. Meaning you should geld your horse if he is not quality material or if it not intended for breeding.
Why do you have a lame stud instead of a lame gelding?
he's colored for it. when he was able to ride he was something. looked like a saddlebred coming down the road..lol.. he was nice. so we only bred him 1 time to see if we got a good colt. we are thinking of gelding though. we have 2 mares and it gets tough.

you could really get hurt doin this trick cos if he sees a carrot or something he will shake his leg and he could kick someone standing close!THINK ABOUT THAT!
If he see a treat, he will start waiving with his foot. I have been kicked in my head because the son of the horse i ride once a week, can that trick. He saw that i was having a carrot, and he kicked me in my head.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
FreddyOgSigrid: Horses don't "kick" with their front legs, they can paw at you. What are you doing with a carrot in front of a horse that you cannot handle anyway? If you are good with horses, you can read their body language and be ready for their next move. Especially in a relaxed carrot feeding session...geez people, think about your actions, THEN do them!
Is it possible that no kids ever get around this horse? Even if they did, if you let them know that he knows this trick and warn them about it, I can't see the need for hand-wringing worry time. I don't think this would hurt someone anyhow unless he was trained to violently hoist his legs into the air at you...he just gently lifts them! So, stop worrying, I can see your hair turning gray, cherokeestables!
Subbed!

Yeah it's just bloody useful having a horse to shake hand. I'll bet a buck you're a backyard breeder that doesn't geld useless fugly stallions and ships the resulting and lame horses to kill buyers because hay and euthanasia are expensive.
ravenmorrigan 2 years ago
whats that mean. im from the us.. does it mean that i dont want to kill him?
MajiksGurl224 2 years ago
Sorry if my comment was hasty. I have all the respect for people that adopt/keep lame horses and still provide them a nice life.
However I think "backyard breeding" custom is continued by people who breed bad horse quality. Meaning you should geld your horse if he is not quality material or if it not intended for breeding.
Why do you have a lame stud instead of a lame gelding?
ravenmorrigan 2 years ago
he's colored for it. when he was able to ride he was something. looked like a saddlebred coming down the road..lol.. he was nice. so we only bred him 1 time to see if we got a good colt. we are thinking of gelding though. we have 2 mares and it gets tough.
MajiksGurl224 2 years ago
i wish i had that horse!! really beautiful and reminds me of one of my favorite movies black beauty!

you could really get hurt doin this trick cos if he sees a carrot or something he will shake his leg and he could kick someone standing close!THINK ABOUT THAT!
teeyoreink 3 years ago
Its not a so good trick, sorry.
If he see a treat, he will start waiving with his foot. I have been kicked in my head because the son of the horse i ride once a week, can that trick. He saw that i was having a carrot, and he kicked me in my head.
FreddyOgSigrid 3 years ago

FreddyOgSigrid: Horses don't "kick" with their front legs, they can paw at you. What are you doing with a carrot in front of a horse that you cannot handle anyway? If you are good with horses, you can read their body language and be ready for their next move. Especially in a relaxed carrot feeding session...geez people, think about your actions, THEN do them!
shellylanette 2 years ago
very clever, but actually a bad habit, if he does this to someone he thinks has a treat, they could be hurt, especially a kid. sorry
cherokeestables 3 years ago
Is it possible that no kids ever get around this horse? Even if they did, if you let them know that he knows this trick and warn them about it, I can't see the need for hand-wringing worry time. I don't think this would hurt someone anyhow unless he was trained to violently hoist his legs into the air at you...he just gently lifts them! So, stop worrying, I can see your hair turning gray, cherokeestables!
