here we go again...this guy never a legend!!! overated throughout his career never can be compared to greats such shane warne, wasim akram.brian lara, sachin tendulker. sir sobers.imran khan.don bradman. murly.....these are serious pioneers of the game......i tell you who is a english cricketing legend proper BATSMAN!!! gooch....now he is a legend!!!!
@MrKami1981 Here you go again MrKami1981..13th test wicket taker of all time,15th in list of most test catches, and 5200 test runs-a great ALL ROUNDER-he was exactly that!!
@LiamE69 haha, yeah! i hope the indians show a bit of fight...cos they were truly dismal at Trent Bridge...but hey, after 15 years of getting murdered by the Aussies isnt it great that we are thrashing everybody? enjoy it mate!! CMON ENGLAND!!
I WAS THERE! as far as english grounds go, Edgbaston cricket ground has the best atmosphere bar none. And this was truly electric, Botham said himself that it was the crowd that took him along in this spell. It is no surprise that 2 of the 3 greatest Ashes tests have been played at Edgbaston (2005 being the other - I WAS THERE too - wat a claim to fame!!)
watch chris old after the 4th wicket...very self conscious in his congratulation. beefy and he didn't see eye to eye - botham thought he was a hypochondriac. but what a spell of bowling this was, still send shivers up my spine
Well the fact is is that no all rounder will ever compare to Ian Botham, i play for Kent and if it werent for meeting Ian Botham i wouldnt play cricket. My dad took me to a game where Ian Botham as watching, i spoke to him and he just inspired to play cricket, now i open the batting for Kent :)
He's the best allrounder England has ever had, we may never see another Ian Botham. Early on a superb swing bowler. Later on a great wicket taker. Few batsmen have played more important innings than him in tests. What we enjoyed most was that he was human ....got into trouble (most of it made up by tabloids). His work for charity speaks for itself. Top bloke.
Marsh and Lillee played poor shots, Alderman was a rabbit and the other two were very fine deliveries. A great memory! Oh, and the LBW was OUT - the ball did move a fair bit but he didn't get forward, and it did not appear to bounce.
@fletcher70 I agree.. but in the context of that game .. aussies got bowled out cheaply .. and the 1st wicket was his 500th and the first ball after tea... then one after another fell. they one the game in that passage of play ... england never got over the shock
In 1974 I was ten years old and went to watch Somerset v Leicestershire, Sunday League match at Westlands in Yeovil. I met a school mate there called Graeme and I asked "why you here"? and he said my brother is 12th man for Somerset, and he took me to meet him. That 12th man was the great Ian Botham before he took cricket by storm, still remains something I will never forget. Ian Botham a legend not just for his cricketing exploits but his charity work also. One of life's truly great humans.
I was 11 when this series happened,i watched it all in the school summer holidays,i remember getting up and it started at 10.50 am,memories you never forget, richie benauld and all that, the australians had channel 9 because the brits had to watch highlights when the ashes was in australia in the old times
One other thing . I've never heard an english crowd as loud, as passionate and so jubilant as that one on that July afternoon in Edgbaston. They roared Botham in as he ran to bowl.
I'd say Freddie bowling at Edgbaston in his first over in the second innings versus the Australians in the 2005 Ashes Series was pretty special to listen to. That entire over against Ponting after getting rid of Langer to getting Pontings wicket with the seventh delivery the crowd noise built up and built and just exploded in a crescendo of jubilation.
Botham was swinging it but bowled them out with intimidation and domineering presence more than anything else. Taylor was important in those vital tests as he missed no chances.
Peter Willey looked like a Planet of the Apes character. ;-)
kim hughes gave in the australian captaincy in the early seventies, there is a cricket series on the bbc at the moment where it shows th kim hughes incident, kim hughes walked out the press conference because he was unable to speak through emotion
Not only did he have great control of his swing, he had some pretty serious pace when he put his back into it. You could always tell when he was ticking by his run up.
duds... yeah there's no dud quite like an Australian dud!!! Why don't you convicts just piss off and play with yourselves...which you are so adept at!!
Nah, it was just Dennis Lillee. He tended to chase wide ones so that's where they decided to bowl to him. And with players like Geoff Boycott (Fiery!) in the side, an awful lot of balls in those days were left alone!
Well, you can console yourself that we have to cheer ourselves up with great archive footage like this! 2005 apart, the Ashes have been painful since 1989.
watch out with slats brett hes already fucked gillys missus looks like hes eyeing up your skirt. By the looks of it shed be on to. looks like a bit of a goer your missus and old slats would love to have his balls bouncing on her chin.
Alan Border, Third Test, 1st Innings at Headingley was a truly terrible decision. But who cares about that in the big (Beefy) picture that was that incredible match?!
Bright was more or less caught bang in front in this one. Even if you need glasses and think he wasn't, look in the proverbial, mates!
Now, now.
Play nice children.
Spirit of cricket and all that ;-)

look at the size of his arse, thighs, and midrift, he could bowl a 90 mile an hour ball off a short run up when he was fired up between 78-82

I forgot how nippy Botham was in his early career. Shame about his back injuries in the mid-80s, his bowling really declined.
