Technically, two very GLARING and sophomoric errors in this movie.
1) An officer, especially a commanding officer would NEVER outwardly display a racist attitude, nor strike another officer. Might happen in private, but never in front of the crew. Simply never. Doing so in this movie tells me no submariner was involved in cleaning up the script.

They did to the Hackman character in this flick what Rob Reiner did to the Nicholson colonel in A Few Good Men- made 'em violent, war-mongering racists.

I realize it's hard to find a scenario where you are in charge of missiles and have NO communication with anyone, but what in the HAIL is the deal with ONE radio on board that takes days to fix? Technically, two very GLARING and sophomoric errors in this movie.
1) An officer, especially a commanding officer would NEVER outwardly display a racist attitude, nor strike another officer. Might happen in private, but never in front of the crew. Simply never. Doing so in this movie tells me no submariner was involved in cleaning up the script.

@bumpas11 Unfortunately,sir, I'm afraid a more devious purpose was behind the slap. Neither the slap nor the casting was an accident. They took a great idea and ruined it by turning it into a PC, petty, racial incident (including naming the sub "Alabama," complete with soon to be revealed racist Capt urging his men on with "Roll Tide" speech). They did to the Hackman character in this flick what Rob Reiner did to the Nicholson colonel in A Few Good Men- made 'em violent, war-mongering racists.

Precisely. On the nose. Both movies did the same mind-numbing, simplistic portrayal of an easy antagonist. God forbid we think for a minute about right and wrong. I'm wondering if I should consider myself partially responsible for an ignorant American public that seems to 'demand' this kind of Hollywood crap. I sure would like to see these works of art removed from our subconscious... but they keep coming... each one following the mold ! Clearly it was code for "Roll Morons".

Probably true... hopefully anyway.... But after four years under water, I experienced plenty of high tension, and coupled with my general knowledge of military affairs, I'll stick to my guns. Just absolutely out of the question. It would never go down that way. The whole premise is without merit or technical authenticity. Especially the captain's wanton disregard for completing the flash traffic that was cut off, and just firing the missiles. Out of the question. Nonsense.
