This character was definitely the best one in the whole LOTR saga, he portrayed how much good and evil can be in one person, that even the most gentle of people can have great darkness inside them. There is no such thing as a purely good person or purely bad person, everyone starts out with a capability to do great evil or great good, the difference is between those who have succumbed to the temptation of the darkness in their heart like Smeagol and those who have not succumbed, like Frodo.
