  • The first one it's a Conner hard drive. I recognize their typical noise when the motor starts to spin up and when it reaches the nominal RPM. Great video!

  • Well thats a new Idea to me.

  • please make a video of just the kalok drive. PLEASE!!

  • why are u so obsessed with the kalok drive? :)

i'm not sure if this drive is still working - i will see what i can do for you...

  • iv never seen a kalok drive before, and i love harddrive alot!

  • ok - i love em too :) - i use them as a musical instrument and i play with their magnetic fields. i have been planning on building a harddrive database with all my hd's - could be interesting for you!

  • i did the same thing with the magnetic fields, cool make a video!

  • @00ROSSI00 I love Hard Drives too! but the Kalok would be interesting.

  • wow that is REALLY kool ... five stars !! OH and the drive at exactly 23.00 seconds into the video is EXACTLY like my old HDD

  • more please

  • how did you get the sound?

  • well, that's quite easy - i pick up the magnetic fields with a coil - which is naturally sensitive to induction. thats all - you just have to amp it up so you can hear it...

  • wich means that camera mic "hears" magnietic fields that our ear cannot hear?

  • well yes and no - i'm not sure if a condenser microphone will be able to pick up magnetic fields, but piezoelectric and dynamic microphones are sensitive to magnetic fields of any kind - afaik.

  • i used a coil from a walkmen pickup system - if thats the word - in this video.

at 20sec you can see it taped to the lever housing in the front left part of the image.

i have been using this technique since 2001 in my live sets and as "studio" equipment.

go check out my site if your interested.

  • the hard disk lever at 19c seems from a very old hard disk mechanics (maybe late 80's?)

  • hmm - let me see...

    it's a damn old thing:

KALOK octagon disc drive KL 330

    32Megs in size!!!!

the interesting thing is that the hd-lever is positioned using a stepper motor!

  • i sooo love those horny old gloomy creepy scruffy disk's mechanics!!! they're damnly intriguing compaired to today boring and obvious disk's inner hardware..

  • can you make a single video of the KL 330 but with normal sound? would be nice

  • really cool!!! seems you're a very serious researcher in this "field" aren't you?

  • i forgot to mention, that the microphones ability to pick up magnetic fields is something engineers try to avoid. it is a flaw, and it only works if you are close to a strong source!

i'm not sure if i would call myself a researcher - i'm into d.i.y or bricolage and am an artist and musician... :)

  • interesting image composition
