  • wow the air bubbles make it look so much more cooler

  • I used mustard to form a tigerstripe patina on my opinel no 7 and it looks really cool! The mustard is easier to "paint" on and you can make some pretty cool patterns.

  • nice video! i used to watch your butterfly knife videos but then i started to get into survival/bushcraft knives. i was thinking about doing this to a usmc kabar as soon as i get some paint stripper but i dont know if it will work since the finish under the paint isnt really polished. do you think it will work?

  • Opinel is a great brand for cheap carbon knifes, betwean 5 an 30 buck i beleave (got a nice one for 10 bucks total lenght 22 cm)

  • If you use baking soda you can remove the patina

  • on the 511 did u get the ruler engraved on it or it came like that?

  • @17hmr243 That isnt a 511

  • @MadNerf

ok my bad looks very close to the 511 just glancing at it

but it not full scandinavian grind and handle patterns look dif

  • The Svord peasant knives are also good cheap high carbon knives to use. I'm actually putting a patina on one now with potato slices.

  • Hey C.L. Thanks for the info. I tried this technique with my Mora Clipper. I used a thin strip of an old cotton T shirt, tied a knot around the handle and tiger striped the blade. I put the cloth on dry,not presoaked. Then held it over the sink and poured on some apple cider vinigar. The unwrapped portion had a light patina and the cloth wrapped area was darker. Great look similar to a damascus. Finished it by washing ,drying and applying a thin coat of Ballistol !

  • Any of the Old Hickory knives would work well being made of 1095. They also go for 3-15 dollars onlne

  • dont leave it on overnight. I ended up with rust and i had to clean it off and start over. 4-5 hours turned out like yours

  • By "sharpen it", do you mean just to strop it, or should I actually sharpen it with stones?

  • hi jeff i put a patina on my mora and i dont like it much so can u tell me how to get it off?

  • @survivalboy24 some 1200 grit sandpaper would probably work.or some polishing compound if you can find some.

  • Hey Jeff, I have a cheapo knife that has some even cheaper black paint on it. The black paint came chipping off, do you know any good methods for getting it off easily? I want to try making a patina on the blade

  • ive used gun blueing cream on mine.

  • its nylon, it wont soak up anything

  • Would the tiger striping work with 550 cord?

  • Try doing a patina on stainless using bleach.

  • wow that mora looks awesome now great job man :) i wanted to ask if the patina now makes that entire blade more resistant to rust or only the darkened or gray parts are now more rust resistant??

  • when you did that paper cutting demo was that before or after you stropped it

  • @buckster2424 it would be after, since there's still rust on the edge

  • The Mora knife (The red one) is really good quality!

  • Do you still have to oil it to keep the brown rust off?

  • It is still a good idea the patina is a coating but is not going to 100% stop rust.

  • @LastDEF

no not really it dosent hurt if it comes into contact with mositure but if you keep it dry then its not nessasary

  • use some oil on your blades dude...it will prevent from rusting more then you want it too :P

  • Whyyyyyy do you destroy it:(.

  • I had a beautiful carbon-steel pocket knife. hammerhead company from the 30s. To bad I dropped it into a river cannoeing two years ago, but the vid just reminded me of it.

  • 666 vids is that not a sign

  • @oxyp7 no

  • old flat shoe laces and cotton twine work well too.

  • ive been trying to find the blue/yellow moras with no luck any help there?

  • Mustard works pretty well, and piss too (maybe not so cool for kitchen knives!).

  • I found that soaking a blade in strong black coffee mixed with natural cocoa can make sort of a rainbow-colored patina. You should try it!

  • would masking tape might work ???

  • my question... why do you cut the strap with the victorinox instead of just the knife you are about to apply yhe petina too. it's gratuitous knivery.

  • HEY CUTLERYLOVER, you should really use cotton material for the tiger striping, it soaks up A LOT more vinegar, and more even results can be obtained. You could find this on flat cotton shoelaces, etc. You can see if it's cotton by burning it, if it burns and melts, (dropping flaming bits) it is NOT COTTON! If it burns into ash, with no hard melted lumps, it's a safe bet it's cotton, and will work better for this use.

  • doing it with potatoes sounds like it would turn out looking pretty cool

  • That is sexy

  • I wasn't sure how i felt about it at first... but now i'm obsessed with this patina tiger-stripe look. I WILL be going out tomorrow to buy some carbon steel to try this on.

  • Im not sure but I didnt hear can you do this to a stainless steel knife?

  • yah, jsut takes alot longer

  • can you make a video on what you sharpen your knives with?

  • Im gonna try crayon for the tiger stripe process

  • This is cool i blue steeled one of my case knifes and got a similar look

  • cool

  • You could cut out thin stripes of tape, and create a pattern with it and then just create the patina as you usually do, it just would only be there, where no tape is.

  • hmm, im gonna try that now. its kinda like poor mans damascus... sorta

  • god i love how shiny all your victorinox's are... every time i see one i think, wow i wish mine were like that.

  • potatoes eh? I guess you could just stab a fresh potatoe and leave it for a while a day..becuase vinegar has way more acid than a potatoe. You could always try it and show us lol. I would but I have no idea what kinds of steel my knives are. Besides they are collector knives...well...besides my 12 inch pakistani "bowie".

  • good point about the oxygen, and the result would be kinda... unatural:P thanks for the answer

  • I was wondering if you put the knife in a glass of vinegar, if it would be to much to get a good patina. that way i could tell how long i wanted it without having to wrap it out all the time. I just wanna say, the natural patina on that knife looked really cool^^

  • hmm I sdont know, you woudl think it woudl give a perfect even cover like a coating, but Im not sure if it woudl work because I think you need the air to help the process...not sure, never tried it...

  • @Kevin507 Vinegar is very good at removing rust but it leaves a thick black Coat and it would look very strange

  • wat do you put it in to patina it...

  • so that when you cut acidic stuff it wont form and more rust

  • edc update

  • hehe guess whats happening to my triflex mora right now :) great look!

    thx jeff

  • haha 10 minutes after seeing this i literally Forced a patina on my knife

  • It looks uhhh......... Idk im not into that.

  • do you have a video on sharping your knives

  • he has quite a few, do a search on his page.

  • yes he does. look through his vids

  • cool

  • opinels too

  • Can you make the blade black?

  • the longer you keep the blade in the solution, the darker and darker itll get, so yes you probably could make it black

  • If you're looking for cheap carbon steel blades, look no further than the magnificient Opinel.

  • i dont know if u have already but could you make a video on the sharpener that you have?

  • looks good!

  • very good job jeff

  • That looks awesome!

  • cool vid just like the first 1

ps: your blade needs sharpening :/

  • I don't suppose anyone has an example of a forced patina using a potato? Interested in seeing this 'slight bluing.'

While on the subject, does anyone know of any other substances which might promote other color hues in a patina?

  • I carved a pumpkin with a swiss army knife and it started a patina

  • i think the tape would work best

if you do that agian do a light patina all over and then do the tiger

  • I DID IT TO MY MORA FIRST LOL

  • i wanna get another opinel and try a two tone look, use a potato on the first half and vineger on the socond half! thatle bee shaweeet!

  • mhh, i might get a mora knife

  • I didn't like the first one you did with the whole blade, but I like this look. It reminds me of shark gills!

  • I've seen a very heavy layer probably of that rust on some metal in my metals class from high school...looks almost exactly like it. I think using the machine to polish metal would have taken care of it that or grinding obviously would have the polisher sort of machine was like a grinder wheel thing but with wires sticking out instead of a thick round rock spinning.

  • jeff why couldn't you just soak the whore blade into a jar of vinegar?

  • What.

  • never treid that, the way I do it I read on the forums a while back, I always figured it needed air as well to do the rpocess, but I dont know if it woudl work directly in vinigar, if it does that woudl amke thgins easier, lol...and even!

  • Huh, I should get another triflex trademen to attempt doing this.

Hey, Jeff, out of curiosity, what do you use to strop your blades with?

I am trying to find a good leather strop, but I sadly cannot.

    Hmm...

    At any rate, fantastic video.

    Sal

  • I got a cheaop strop and some cheap compond over at knifecenter...works great!

  • Oh, one of those? I was wondering if they had worked well, thank, Jeff.

    Sal

  • *Thank*

I had to correct myself, it was just too weird a typo...

  • very awesome!

  • This might be dumb, but what about forcing a Patina on a Buck 110 Folding Hunter? That's HC steel (420HC) Isn't it? What do you say, Jeff? Should I attempt it?

  • well $20 is actually a stainless steel, they call it 420HC for high carbon meanign their is a high carbon contect, more than anythgin else its another way to make the softer HC seem good, but Buck does do a good heat treat on it, but as for doijg this with a 420HC, I dont think it wodul work, but if it doesnt worst case senario you clean your blade with viniger, why not try it anyway, hahah..

  • @SD79FORVEVER

    did it work?

  • dang dude!

    that knife is sexy!

i have one and ill probably do that!

  • very cool

  • Definitely going to try this, cool looking and protective finish.

  • cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is there a texture?

  • its smooth to the touch...

  • how do you avoid geting a patina on your corbon steel blade

  • There is no way to completely stop a patina, but you can make it show up slower by taking very good care of the blade, and cleaning them well, but in the end, its an inevitability.

  • very well put. i tend to get coated blades and that would really slow down the patina. another way is to oil the knife, but you probably knew that lol

  • good responses here, best thign you cna do is baby your knife, lol oil it everyday after use, clean it well, and keep it dry, and polish it often...

  • Great video, I like the color combination on the blue and yellow handle. The Patina turned out very cool, I'm going to try a blood spatter pattern or even try and make some skulls. Thanks very much for the info. Also I love my Mora Knives in fact I am picking up a few more very soon, they are great to work with and very sharp.5/5

  • thats beastly :D thanks for the video. keep it up bro

  • cool!

  • I am currently trying the mayonaise thing on one of the mora laminate blades I'll let you know if it works

  • you can go to a shoe store or like a dicks sporting goods and get flat shoelaces

  • Sweet deal, I need to get myself some Moras.

  • yes he has reviews. hes got one multiple knives and he has some with individual ones

  • congradulations, jeff

  • awseome

  • awesome vid keep them up
