I think that those launch systems are simple catapults without control. An airplane launch system must put the plane in a correct and stable attitude, with the optimal airplane glide speed, and of course it must be as high as possible in order to the plane had the max mechanical energy. Do not launch gliders as rokets, you will get unpredictible behavior.

Thanks for the comment on my video. The project was really to design the launcher in my Solid Works 3D CAD class and make a working model of our designs. Our instructor could have had us design just about anything but he chose airplanes. The competition was just for fun. I think our team won because we built a better airplane.
