I would like to debate old earth interpretations of Genesis 1 with him. I am not sure if I convinced of that view (I am keeping an open mind) but I would like some of these creationist kids to consider other viewpoints as well.

No it wouldn't. A true belief is by free choice, not mandatory. Mandatory does not exist in Christianity. You will find it in cults however.
