  • talk about back breaking work getting them huge boulders out back in the 1890s by hand and a dinky wagon, cart. You guys should first find out how much total gold was found in that mine before jumping the gun to dig where they left off.Always do research first, gather info.oh yeah......get a metal detector and go at it! save you tons of work and time.trusttttt meeeeee......

  • is this down old fort jim road?

  • these are the type that u always read about getting hurt or killed....

  • Placerville is still rich in gold. Every now and then you'll hear about a discovery of a big chunk of gold. If you go to Coloma, and go into the woods off the trails, you can see they're still mining for gold with the troughs in the streams. The American River's sand has a lot of tiny gold flakes (mixed with a lot of pyrite so it's hard to know) but the current is too fast to sift in the middle of the river. Need a waterproof overall too

Gold fever is still very much alive and well even today.

  • LOL Nooooo. Leave the dynomite home. Any blasting may close the mine for good due to its age. Test the floor for gold that escaped the ore cart.

  • so wtf, did you find anything, should have taken a bucket of that cave in to pan out. 16 to 1 mine found a main vein right off the old mine shaft, poor bastards dug(by hand)right by a fortune back in the day

  • how did you know how deep the water was if nobody had been in it? then, someone knowledgable in these matters mentioned falling down a 1200 foot shaft? well, maybe a lifeless body after drowning or in a different mine sans aqua, but seriously, such exploration is rarely worth the risk. if the dumps show reasonable signs of auriferous mineralization, after taking all the necessary precautions, a more foolhardy soul than myself might entertain the idea of underground exploration

  • The Dumb family. Daddy Dumb, little Billy Dumb. Fuck, they should have brought the whole Dumb clan. Be sure to stand IN the cave when you dynamite it. We wouldn't you spilling you Dumb genes into the open.

  • I lived in Placerville when I was a kid and friends an I would go exploreing in the many old mines just to the north of downtown .

  • Don't blast without a permit.

I'd recommend that you set up a siphon for the water. Do that first.

Next, figure out what the 49ers were mining: quartz or...

An electric jack-hammer, Hilti type, is the best way to break up the cave in. Rent one from Home Depot or ...

Get water proof illumination in there.

The old spoil pile is a pretty good indicator of how much volume has been mined.

You may find they gave up because of water flood or darkness. The cave in would be a show stopper, too.

  • Unfortunately cockiness can get you on the Darwin Award list. Going into a mine you don't know could land you at the bottom of a 1200' shaft... I have no qualms about going in mines, but doing so with extreme caution and preparation is important. an M80 in a mine you have not dug yourself, stupid. M80 is not anywhere near 1/4 stick equivalency. It is 1/400th stick equivalency, The noise could be enough to make unscaled ceiling material to fall down and make it impossible to get out.

  • @rmueller58 Of course, you can't fall down a shaft if the floor of the cave is covered with water.

  • @gregryf

Yes you can. The floor below could be 25'-50' ? totally flooded. They maybe should do more researching 1st.

  • @lac123able Yeah, that could happen but if so, you might drown but you wouldn't fall.

  • @lac123able How do you fall through water? You would just be wet, and then you would swim out.

  • A buddy and I are going after some digging, panning etc. in the spring. I am also living in P.Ville. Let me know if you want some more help. It might be a good idea to work on getting that water out, if at all possible. I have been on 45 acres on my mom's land recently with my metal detector, also looking for gold and artifacts. This area is full of great finds. Hit me up if your interested in getting together with more people.

    Peace

  • i live in santa rosa and went mining further north the only medal i almost found were silver handcuffes lol

  • Nice...handcuffs...by the way, how do you "almost" find silver handcuffs anyway? :)

  • I love living in Northern California..You ought to see if there is indeed anymore gold embedded within that rock, be nice to know

  • Yea! Gold is the best!

  • cool guys be careful in those. i live in jackson and some kids got stuck in a mine shaft in volcano years ago when part of it collapsed. but keep up the good prospecting! lord knows not enough people do it.

  • That looked way scary, going in that cave... did you ever go back and find any gold with the metal dector? If you do be careful.

  • enjoyed your video marcel..from north bay ontario canada thanks!

  • Wow! Must be awesome to have such a big piece of California gold rush history on your property!

Pick yourself up a Tesoro lobo and see what you can find!

  • Good video, gotta be carefull about old gold mines some of them have rattlesnake dens in them.

  • did you ever go back to the mine?

  • awsome! I love plaserville!

  • theres stillll gold in them thar hills!!! let us know what you find!

  • this looks WAY more fun that skiing...

  • I live in Kelsey and these are all over the place. We have 2; one we've found the other is still hidden in the brush. With the price of gold over $900 an ounce, I"m surprised the park Lotus isn't crawling with tourists.

Stay safe... always have a 3rd person who stays out who can call for help if something happens.

  • Pretty cool stuff guys...

  • great video. there's gold in them therr hills.

  • well, what you dont see is that those holes can go down 100,s of feet. and even though the look like its only a puddle its deep. plus once you fall in the bad thing that can happen is the sides of the shaft can colapes from the vibration. old mines are sensative to that. but on the other side if you walk over a shaft that has a boarded cover of it the timeber may give way. dont get me wrong i think mine exsploring is cool. just be safe as you do it. p.s. keep in mind bad air conds..too.have fun

  • i agree with the above statement! ive been in mines before and you can easly walk over a cat shaft ..made for ventalation going up or down. be very carefull but i would like to see what you come up with p.s. use better lighting please!!!

  • If there was a hole going down, wouldn't all the water flow out the bottom of it? And if not, then we would just be swimming, so it doesn't seem so dangerous to me. What am I missing?

  • we're definitely getting a metal detector ASAP. we got gold fever!

  • you need to be carful some times they dig a shaft straight down where you walking in the middle of the tunnel.get a metal detector ond check those taillings piles first.
