The smoking = lung cancer equation is the tip of the iceberg. Smoking also causes cancer of the pancreas, mouth, bladder, throat and kidneys. And heart disease. And thyroid disease. It's not a "too much of anything will kill you" situation--ANY form of tobacco is toxic to every organ system in the body.
Smoking was much more common 35 years ago, many of the smokers who had picked up the habit several decades earlier were less aware than many are now.
This was the era where the information that is so ingrained in todays youth was just starting to come out, warnings on packets had only been on packets for 10 years and the link between smoking and lung cancer had been established only 20 years prior.
I know that, of course. Although, I still find it hard to believe that smoking wasn't considered harmful at all. As a former smoker, I can definitely say you can feel the impact of smoking on your health.
