  • A much simpler idea would be to remove the clip that holds the base on, remove the base and slide a whole uncut piece of the pvc pipe onto the defective cylinder, replace base. But for God's sake, a cylinder is easily removed with a pipe wrench and a new cylinder is about $20.

  • Good work!! Great video!!!!!

  • geez you had to do it to 2 chairs, do all these crap chairs do this. ugh.

  • Did it with a 3" piece of pvc pipe I found laying around the office and used tie wraps. Worked like a charm. Cheap, easy, quick solution. Beats trying to get the cylinder fixed. Thanks for posting!

  • This is so damn ghetto. Lmao.

  • brilliant - will give it a go - i particularly like the calm way he speaks in the video - very meditative and reassuring ;)

  • Great, just "repaired" my chair in less than 5 minutes. Jused tie clips instead of radiator clamps. A very wonderful solution. And I needed a fix height. A++

  • Thanks man. I used this myself and the chair is awesome now, finally no more getting frustrated because it keeps sinking! Needed a piece of pipe that was 14cm long. I used cable ties (zip clips) to keep it locked, heaps easier than sourcing radiator clips. Loving the whole DIY fixes atm.... cheap = great!

    Thanks again bro!

  • Nice kludge. The parts involved are a lot cheaper than buying a replacement gas cylinder... that will just loose it's seal in about a year. Thumbs up. :)

  • Thank you, I just fixed mine in a few minutes.

  • haha i just fixed my chair using this video

  • Worked great for me. I used 1.5 inch inner diameter spa flex tubing and I have no complaints so far.

  • it works but looks like shit

  • Thank you so much....

  • Hey again, it worked! I cant thank you enough for sharing this video and quick fix. I mistook the sawing it in half bit however and only asked the guy at Home Depot to cut a slit in it. thiiisss produced the problem of not being able to get it around the pole!

So I popped the PVC pipe in a pot of boiling water for a few mintues to get it nice and soft and it slipped on real easy :)

  • Thank you sooo much for this vid! gonna go out tomorrow and try this. my chair is driving me nuts :)

  • I used your method here on my broken chair today! Thank you for giving me the idea to use PVC pipe and those screw clamps. Everything else I found online said to use a yardstick with duct tape. You used the same philosophy, yet yours seems to be a much sounder solution in my mind. Again -- many thanks!

  • I WAS GOOGLING FOR OFFICE CHAIR REPAIR SHOPS, AND I RAN ACROSS THIS VIDEO AND IT WAS JUST WHAT THE OFFICE DOCTOR ORDERED. THANX FOR THE IDEA. I AM A FIX-IT YOURSELF KIND OF GUY, AND THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEEDED... THANX! JAZZYFATTS

  • Perfect! I didn't think of this and am so glad I found your video. This technique works a treat!

  • Thank you, excellent quick fix when you need a sixed height chair. I tried your idea but with using cardboard tubing around twoilet papers and a couple of pieces of tight-wrapped ducktape. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • Well it's not exactly fixed, you know, there's a reason we have those gas cylinders, and that's the possibility to actually lower the chair when needed.

However, it's a good idea when you use the chair only at it's highest rise, and I just got one over here -- actually, cylinder is ok, but the mounting part is defective as it pushes on the release plate on the cylinder all the time, and it ain't easy to fix without proper equipment, so I guess this is a good idea how to make it useful.

  • @roosswald Hi, thanks for your comment. I agree that the chair is not exactly fixed, it has just become useful. I had not thought of it this way, until I read your comment.

  • @roosswald The next gas cylinder will also eventually fail. Set it at the height needed for your desk, then fix it. If you need other heights, cut pieces of the pipe in different lengths. My chair has been falling for a year. Now it's perfect,

  • is this meant to be funny.. haha or is he actually being serious

  • @mattisMooha Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, it's meant to be funny. It's meant to be a send up of other "How to" YouTube videos. However this video does show a simple, easy and effective way of fixing a sinking office chair.

  • Thanks!

  • Thank you so much! I just fixed my $200 office chair (that has driven me crazy with this problem for months) for $4.74!!! You can't beat that!!!

  • Thanks! That was helpful.

  • I just spent $80 on a new gas cylinder when I could have done this. Your really creative. =]

  • made mine from a paper spool from work

  • that work gr8 thxs

  • what the hell

  • Again Scottie Dog comes to the rescue helping everyone with his practical solutions to pesky problems.
