изключително съм горд, че най-великата заломе на всички времена е моя сънародница и страдам, и се срамувам, че в родината ми никой не е чувал за нея. моля се само мадам люба величкова да почива в мир. маестра, все пак ви слушат в семплата българия. поклон!
@Hervinbalfour You already know the answer, sweetie, however great Welitsch was/is, and she's truely great, she sang Salome too early, too soon and too much, 600+ performances, during her career. And she paid for it dearly: her vocal instrument was turned into a batch of shreds and scraps when she was only in her early forties.
@mannail888 That may indeed be true, but some singers are like that, they can't help it; Ljuba was made to sing Salome, she didn't reach anything near the same intensity and depth in any other role. If she had been careful she might have had a longer career but she would probably be forgotten today. Instead she is the Salome that all her successors have to deal with.
@Hervinbalfour "By singing roles that were essentially too heavy for her, and by singing them a lot, Welitsch's voice began to deteriorate very rapidly. (Surgeries to remove nodes on her vocal cords, no doubt, contributed to the decline)." IMDb
The video response above shows Ljuba Welitsch, alas too briefly, in the final scene of a live performance of Salome. It is taken from the movie "The Man Between". Amazing, dangerous but thrilling singing.
Great stuff! Much wilder than the official recording she made with Reiner (which turned me on to her about 44 years ago). Thanks much for sharing this amazing, lurid, white-hot, shamelessly lusty performance, and for your good long commentary.

I saw her at the Met, in 1940s as Salome. I still shiver when I think of her Salome. I have never been able to enjoy another singer doing it.

It is amazing that one can listen to a recording from 1944 on youtube and it sounds fairly decent too. Kudos, CzarDodon!

Is there anyone who can tell me why Ljuba Welitsch's career lasted for such a short period? Is it because she ruined her voice early in her career?
