Hi. I would like to ask you something because i want to buy a macbook. Does it really really work that well with window 7? and is it overall a good pc versus some other pc s that your collagues have? thanks
hahahaha u complaing about 6 months later of slow boot up? try having slow boot 3 days after you get hardcore asus gaming laptop. this is why imreturning it ad get a mac.
@LucidityTruth well i love both mac n pc. the guy at best buy has both laptops and said i should get the mac i didn't go to the apple store because those guy of course r gonna tell u to get one.
duel boot is probably why your boot is a little bit longer,i have a macbook for about 8 months i still love my mac , i had one problem it was time machine fail easy fix just had to delete last in progress file works good now.
Have you tried running a program called Onyx? It SPEEDS up your Mac by clearing old caches, running scripts that Mac OS X may not get a chance to run, etc. I really recommend it if you find your MacBook slow.
how is yur battery latch cover is it loose? thats what i noticed on the 2008 late macbook aluminum models...mines starting to get loose hopefully apple can fix it!!!
A quick tip on the whole boot-up time issue. I had Windows installed on my MacBook and all of a sudden my boot-time doubled. I resolved it by going to System Preferences in Mac OS X / Start-up Disk / Selected my OS X partition and then pressed the restart button next to it.
Apparently your Mac has a hard time knowing which partition to boot after installing Windows.
Also, using a defrag app might help, but I never noticed any substantial difference there.
Glad to hear that this kind of computer is working out for other people. But for me, I wish I would have waited to purchase something else. This same computer was my second Mac (first was an iMac G3). I had no expectations, so I bought this. The HDD has been replaced and it's extremely slow. It can't even handle basic work in Xcode. I have loads of problems even when running Safari. Apple tells me I should have bought an iMac and now I realize I don't really need portability. I'm pissed.

Track pad doesn't work, boot up time has slowed. Apple has built itself on easy UI. I understand that users can't upgrade anything themselves on MacBooks. I was considering buying a MacBook, but now, not so much.
Had the 2.53GHz MBP for about 6 months too. It is a great computer, just like you the boot time has increased from like 20 seconds to around 50. Its fast as ever, mac and windows work great on it. I haven't really done anything to push its performance to the limit either. Even with 6 spaces full of crap it runs extremely smooth. Only thing is, DON'T DROP IT, Aluminum is extremely maliable (from personal experience:( Otherwise, great review.
Hey Jon - Thanks for the update. It was nice to hear you revisit this topic and not just leave at the first "rosey" impressions. Keepin' it real. Thanks again.
Hey Jon I have a 2.4 GHZ macbook pro 15'' model which I have had for about two months now. It is a fast processing machine that always loads up quickly at roughtly 20 seconds. I enjoyed your review of the macbook because I haven't heard to much about the macbook and it's features so thank you and best of luck in graduate school:)
its jdavieslfc, just wonderin if u could perhaps take at look at my 1st youtube video it is a review of a 250GB toshiba external hard drive, if you could do that it would mean so so much to me. And alos i am also very happy with my 2.4 GHz macbook it is very user friendly
I have the old white Macbook (not unibody) which I bought last June. It used to boot up lightning fast but I've noticed the same problem that it stays with the blue screen longer now making boot up twice as long. Although it is still well under a minute so I shouldn't complain.
It must be a security update or something to affect both type of Macbook.
The graphics card is the major concern. My MacBook 2,1's graphics card is not supported, I can run Spore quite speedy, with a few graphic bugs. The speed is 2,16GHz and the VRAM is 64 on a GMA 950, my friend said he couldn't believe his eyes that it worked really well, apart from not being able to build a creature as the creator was black, so you had to click esc etc. all the time. But fulfilling the minimi specs, which a new MacBook does, you shouldn't have a problem. Go with either. Love
I do. But for all that's worth it, NEVER get the Mac version. Heck, I'd say, never buy something ported to Mac by Aspyr.
They crap down the games a whole lot. It lags like hell and there's no anti aliasing. On a Mac Pro!
Then buy the PC version and install XP in bootcamp and install the PC version of The Sims 2.
The Sims 3 will be a Cider port, so it will be the PC version running in a WINE environment, it won't lag as much and will almost have same performance as on a PC.
lag?! Differnt virsion?! you pay 2000 grand almost for whats supposed to be a high performance machine, and get lag on a game like sims?! wow u dont know if buying a mac will be so great after all....
i dont know what that is but im assuming its a think that ports games, yeah thats sasd i would of thought if ur paying that much cash to have a "superiour" laptop youd think id be able to handle games like that oh god,
What do you think, high end Macbook, or refurbished baseline Macbook Pro? I am a student who does a lot of computer work, and I do a moderate amount of graphic design, i.e. iMovie, etc. Also, this would be my main computer.
I got the same model 2 days ago and I'm not loving the trackpad but the gestures are nice. Also, it's really fast. I love that. Plus I feel like i"m on a MacBook Pro mini or something haha.
I have VMWare Fusion running XP, and it works fine. The only time it began to slow down, was during the installation of my virtual machine.
Great to watch this, I just ordered a new glossy 17" MacBook Pro and I was a little hesitant about the glossy display (I have a matte 15" MBP) but I said what the hell and went for it.
I love my Macbook Pro. A bit bothered that ONCE when I closed the lid and put it into a sleeve, drove for an hour and took it out - it hadn't gone to sleep so was VERY hot and no mouse or keyboard action possible. Shut it down with a 4 seconds on the power button, left it to cool for 10 minutes, rebooted and was fine. Scary though. What if it had been in the bag for two hours??? Meltdown?
Keyboard is a dream, I have 2.8GHz processor and 4GB RAM and saving a file as mps is FAST. LOVE it.
i love the multi touch, i used my friends macbook pro for a day or two and then i used my dads windows laptop and every time i wanted to scroll down i kept using 2 fingers. 3 months later i still do that XD
Good review, but the comment "Vista is faster on my PC then my friends full loaded Dells". Computer hard-ware is computer hardware. There is no difference between what Apple uses and what Dell uses. The reason their Vista is slower, is simply because they don't know how to take care of their PC, not because Apple is somehow superior, which isn't the case.
I will probably be getting the new Macbook in a few months, been using a Lenovo S10 for a while.
thanks jon! I will show this to my dad and now he seid he will give me a bit of extra money to buy the white MacBook on my birthday in July! thank you so much!!!
actually i really dont need windows anymore... just removed it a few hours ago ! leopard is so much better and has pretty much everything i need + improved ! oh yeah almost forgot, wont be able to do so much illegal stuff now, darn =)
boot up: it takes a longer time because the more stuff you have in your home folder the longer it takes to decompress and to compress when you shutdown. That is why it takes longer as time goes on. Cuz you put more and more stuff in the home folder.
if you stay away from torrents, there is no reason at all for a need for an antivirus, there are a few free antivirus softwares for mac, that you can download anyways. but theres no need for virus protection at all.
agreed. I've owned my macbook for almost 2 years. About a year into having it, I installed symmantec antivirus for mac and the first scan found absolutley nothing. That was after a year of my browsing habits.
my iMac 2.4GHZ model kicks the shit out of any PC i have previously owned. and i just had to reinstall windows on my sisters PC because she got a virus, makes me appreciate my Mac even more!
as soon as you pop Windows on a Mac it slows down the boot up time. My iMac does the same with XP on it. Not really an issue its still WAY faster than a normal Windows boot up
your boot up time issue is probably because of windows vista. Since i installed boot camp, my Mac turns on much slower than before.... and still i have XP
Got my macbook a couple months ago and it has been my best friend since. My pc has been giving me errors for months, I've installed vista, xp, win 7 and had problems all over the place (win 7 being most stable), so the macbook with osx has been like an escape from problems. Everything just works. I can't believe I held on to pc's for such a long time. Damn those games.
I've had the same MacBook for the same period of time and I love it as well. Although unlike him I prefer to use the trackpad vs a mouse just because it's such a nice trackpad.... I don't have any issues with clicking (either left or two fingered right). I use the backlighting on the keyboard a lot... really helps since I spend most of my evening/night on the computer.
Also my boot time isn't noticeably slower although I only have a couple of apps that start along with the computer...
wait for snow leopard. They say that the new macs with snow leopard are going to be made for effincy with all of its parts. So, i think you should wait. Just my opinion....
I do not know why but my macbook do gets hot you can feel it getting hotter within few minutes of use. I do not know if this is because it is a refurbished mac but I had two refurbished macs the 2.0 and the 2.4 should I get a brand new one instead?
Maybe because he has different spec? newer model? or maybe he just means it doesn't get no where near as hot as the old macbook or other laptops, I know my HP Laptop gets a lot hotter than my Macbook, also it would depend on what your doing, my Macbook has been on for a hour now, and is just warm in the left hand corner.
There was this one guy saying that the Aluminum Macbook got dirty easy and that it was hard to clean. IS any of this true?!?! I doubt it but it would keep me from buying the laptop all together.
no it doesnt get dirty just in case jon is 2 busy to respond ive had mine since dec 22 of last year and its noot hard 2 clean at all it really never gets dirty, some people make up lies cause they are secret microsoft users
actually from what i noticed.......if you dont use boot camp......the boot up of the mac is faster.....seems like to me that without running 2 operating systems the boot up is loads faster
Jon Nice Review You Make Me Wanna Go And Get A MBP Right Now But Since Im Upgrading The Memory to 4GB And Hard Drive To 320GB I Need To Order Mines Today!!!!!!
if u run houdini (3D design application) my 24" imac (early 09) heats up in the top left hand corner like crazy same with my macbook pro 15" (late 08) it burns!!!!!
Yeah.... the backlit keyboard I don't use that much, even when its quite dark, I know where most buttons are, but I still have it on in dark situations. And yeah, I use an external Mouse + Keyboard, but the trackpad is nice. I've ordered a Griffin Elevator so it will be kept on there. Glossy screen doesn't effect me, I think its fine! Boot camp works great. I own the MacBook Pro 2.4GHz. And yeah the graphics are flawless!
Congratz on the purchase! Sounds cool. Yeah a spare battery would be a good purchase if your traveling a lot. I get about three hours out of my battery.
I think the backlit keyboard is usefull because im sometimes typing at night when i get a good idea for my book. and the boot up time got slower because you have stuff on it and tough more stuff you have tough longer it loads.
i absolutely regret my purchase. Windows XP is much better than OSX. Yes OSX looks nice but theres something about the general system that i dont like.
It has been proved that XP and VIsta can (in some circumstances) run faster on a Mac than a PC with the same hardware configurations. Iv'e tried this myself, and to an extent, it is fairly true. Only downside is hardware compatibility.
trust im as far as a fanboy as possible and os x is inherently slimmer and faster and more stable just because of its architecture. it may not be noticeable to some but its there.
agreed, i feel the way that you navigate leopard is awkward and to plain. windows has this easy way around things and another way which makes you feel more in control. mac systems have always felt like they are in control and you can't really do what you really want to do. i hope someone understands! :S
i understand its everyones opinion i mean like in my opinion they feel the same except in my opinion leopard is a bit smoother and more stable but again its everyones opinon
Like you I don't use the keyboard backlighting at all.
But I hate the glossy screen, and worse, I hate that the screen isn't evenly lit. It's brighter on the bottom. Now, this isn't a problem when you're working, but it's not that great when you're watching a DVD.
On the other hand I LOVE the trackpad. This is the first laptop where I DON'T need a mouse.
i dont think your going to get another better hardware version but i say you wait till june when they release Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I hoped this helped.
I think now would be a new time to buy because they just had a huge update... But if you wait a few more months they should be shipping with snow leopard. Im not making any promises because its just a rumor for now, but I heard snow leopard will be released in August.
Hi. I would like to ask you something because i want to buy a macbook. Does it really really work that well with window 7? and is it overall a good pc versus some other pc s that your collagues have? thanks

do u need antivirus on a macbook
meltdown129 2 years ago
ive not heard people rave about needing one, I have seen a few videos were people will have some free stuff and a WIFI guard and thats about it.
Seanuk 2 years ago
if you stay away from torrents, there is no reason at all for a need for an antivirus, there are a few free antivirus softwares for mac, that you can download anyways. but theres no need for virus protection at all.
futbolplaya07 2 years ago
agreed. I've owned my macbook for almost 2 years. About a year into having it, I installed symmantec antivirus for mac and the first scan found absolutley nothing. That was after a year of my browsing habits.

as soon as you pop Windows on a Mac it slows down the boot up time. My iMac does the same with XP on it. Not really an issue its still WAY faster than a normal Windows boot up
macpac22 2 years ago
your boot up time issue is probably because of windows vista. Since i installed boot camp, my Mac turns on much slower than before.... and still i have XP
gandatrowx 2 years ago
Got my macbook a couple months ago and it has been my best friend since. My pc has been giving me errors for months, I've installed vista, xp, win 7 and had problems all over the place (win 7 being most stable), so the macbook with osx has been like an escape from problems. Everything just works. I can't believe I held on to pc's for such a long time. Damn those games.
therandygoat 2 years ago
I've had the same MacBook for the same period of time and I love it as well. Although unlike him I prefer to use the trackpad vs a mouse just because it's such a nice trackpad.... I don't have any issues with clicking (either left or two fingered right). I use the backlighting on the keyboard a lot... really helps since I spend most of my evening/night on the computer.
Also my boot time isn't noticeably slower although I only have a couple of apps that start along with the computer...

Great useful review. I own the same MacBook and I noticed the same things. Also better angle this time. You need sleep and to loosen up a bit.

I'm planning to buy a new iMac.
Should I buy it right now?
or wait for snow leopard?
I have no rush for a new computer though
hahhahhahhahhahh 2 years ago
wait for snow leopard. They say that the new macs with snow leopard are going to be made for effincy with all of its parts. So, i think you should wait. Just my opinion....
yankeez00 2 years ago
really... well i just bought a basline model macbook pro.. should i be worring about this lol
efil4obel 2 years ago
So then wait...duh!
prestoleum 2 years ago
wait for snow leopard.
it should be a very nice update and will fix a few problems that leopard has at the moment.
it should be announced at WWDC as well, which is in June/July.
It may cost a little more for it to be pre-installed but you'll be paying for what it's worth

I do not know why but my macbook do gets hot you can feel it getting hotter within few minutes of use. I do not know if this is because it is a refurbished mac but I had two refurbished macs the 2.0 and the 2.4 should I get a brand new one instead?
liza2000us2001 2 years ago
Maybe because he has different spec? newer model? or maybe he just means it doesn't get no where near as hot as the old macbook or other laptops, I know my HP Laptop gets a lot hotter than my Macbook, also it would depend on what your doing, my Macbook has been on for a hour now, and is just warm in the left hand corner.

There was this one guy saying that the Aluminum Macbook got dirty easy and that it was hard to clean. IS any of this true?!?! I doubt it but it would keep me from buying the laptop all together.
EliteSoldier112 2 years ago
no it doesnt get dirty just in case jon is 2 busy to respond ive had mine since dec 22 of last year and its noot hard 2 clean at all it really never gets dirty, some people make up lies cause they are secret microsoft users
TajaiErica 2 years ago
actually from what i noticed.......if you dont use boot camp......the boot up of the mac is faster.....seems like to me that without running 2 operating systems the boot up is loads faster

Yeah.... the backlit keyboard I don't use that much, even when its quite dark, I know where most buttons are, but I still have it on in dark situations. And yeah the graphics are flawless!
itztehgeorge 2 years ago
i just got the exact same macbook pro you have!!! (im upgrading the ram today then im gonna buy a spare battery
ElectronicsCritics 2 years ago
Congratz on the purchase! Sounds cool. Yeah a spare battery would be a good purchase if your traveling a lot. I get about three hours out of my battery.
itztehgeorge 2 years ago
I think the backlit keyboard is usefull because im sometimes typing at night when i get a good idea for my book. and the boot up time got slower because you have stuff on it and tough more stuff you have tough longer it loads.

i absolutely regret my purchase. Windows XP is much better than OSX. Yes OSX looks nice but theres something about the general system that i dont like.
LeoGeo100 2 years ago
You purchased a Mac?
It has been proved that XP and VIsta can (in some circumstances) run faster on a Mac than a PC with the same hardware configurations. Iv'e tried this myself, and to an extent, it is fairly true. Only downside is hardware compatibility.
DickAddis 2 years ago
trust im as far as a fanboy as possible and os x is inherently slimmer and faster and more stable just because of its architecture. it may not be noticeable to some but its there.
pimpmaster6294 2 years ago
i read about that does it really run faster? cause im planning to buy some games but they run windows so im thinking about running win7 as secondary
ElectronicsCritics 2 years ago
i have windows 7 in parallels and it works great. check google for the install
maximsouter 2 years ago
agreed, i feel the way that you navigate leopard is awkward and to plain. windows has this easy way around things and another way which makes you feel more in control. mac systems have always felt like they are in control and you can't really do what you really want to do. i hope someone understands! :S
lloydc199207 2 years ago 2
i understand its everyones opinion i mean like in my opinion they feel the same except in my opinion leopard is a bit smoother and more stable but again its everyones opinon
ElectronicsCritics 2 years ago
Like you I don't use the keyboard backlighting at all.
But I hate the glossy screen, and worse, I hate that the screen isn't evenly lit. It's brighter on the bottom. Now, this isn't a problem when you're working, but it's not that great when you're watching a DVD.
On the other hand I LOVE the trackpad. This is the first laptop where I DON'T need a mouse.

my macbook is like 1.5 years old and it still boots up in 15 seconds. im running 10.5.6 leopard.

should i wait for the next version? has anyone bought it? please advise.
LayAllYourLoveOnMe 2 years ago
i dont think your going to get another better hardware version but i say you wait till june when they release Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I hoped this helped.
coolguyhasfun 2 years ago
I think now would be a new time to buy because they just had a huge update... But if you wait a few more months they should be shipping with snow leopard. Im not making any promises because its just a rumor for now, but I heard snow leopard will be released in August.
