Clapton is an adequate practitioner, however, he himself admits he is a "slow hand." I have seen many amateurs who are able to make a guitar "sing" more beautifully and gracefully than Clapton. That said, he was the master who wrote the music, so indeed he deserves high praise for his contributions. But, please let's not put him in the same category as Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Dick Dale or Stevie Ray Vaughn in terms of raw talent and skill.

Speed isn't everything and is boring,like Alvin Lee etc.Clapton's style can SOUND slower than it is, and that's his unique ability.Take for instance the single 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl' by The Yardbirds : it sounds as if the sublime solo is much slower than the tempo,but he fits it in time perfectly.It elevates the track toa new level.Also look at 'Bluesbrakers'

I agree that all things considered, Clapton's unique styling, his composition and his intangibles make him a better musician than those guys, but not a better guitarist.
