Apparently it wasn't just that Anne was not good-looking enough for Henry but apparently she was too curvaceous. A slim, shapeless woman back them resembled purity and meant they were a virgin. If you had curves, you would seem to be sexually active. He wanted Audrey Hepburn but he got Marilyn Monroe.
@xxdressagedivaxx Yes! that is so true. He also did not like Anne because he wanted to choose his own bride. Cromwell did talk him into this but he constantly wanted to "pursue" someone. Anne got off easy. Outlived all the other queens, was present for Mary's coronation and got Hever Castle. She also kept good relationships with Edward, Elizabeth and Mary.
By the he married Anne of Cleves he was an obese old man, suffering from the effects of venereal disease. That this series chose to ignore history is too bad.
Only one year passed between Henry's marriage to AoC and Katherine Howard. Elizabeth would only have been about eight, while she and Edward jump like three years in the series.
To her enormous credit, Anne of Cleves was a wonderful step-mother to all 3 children. She even looked after them after the death of Katherine Howard. She was a life-long friend to Mary Tudor, and was given a place of honor at the latter's coronation.
i read that Edward was very sick once, and Anne of Cleves helped to cure him... if that did happen, she would of been a great mother to Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth who lost their own mothers.
Here Charles Brandon looks as young as Edward Seymour, 0:06, but in a few more episodes he looks old and decrepit while Edward looks exactly the same as in this scene.
Could someone explain to me how Thomas Cromwell was executed for treason, I know his enemies didn't like him and wanted to get rid of him, and I know the King was mad at him for giving him an "ugly" wife, but does that really get you killed, getting the wrong wife, really, I don't remember what he was accused of.
I do feel sorry for Thomas Cromwell, he was kind of like Thomas Wolsey, they both tried so hard, doing what they're told, but they still got screwed in the end.
Why couldn't he of settled with her?? I mean, he already had Edward, and yes she might not of been the best looking, but it seems like she had the ability to draw the family back together. And maybe problems that happened later on would not of happened if Anne of Cleves had been around for longer...Seriously, who has six wives??
@Leo13218 Actually, contemporary reports of AoC describe her as slender, blonde, and quite pretty. It's likely that the Holbein portrait was fairly accurate. A court portraitist who was *too* flattering would not have kept his job for long--he was paid to paint a likeness after all. It's likely that AoC became "the King's sister" because in the volatile political atmosphere of the day, it was no longer a good idea for Henry to make an alliance with Cleves.
He tore apart his country, he severed alliances at the drop of a hat, he abandoned, mistreated and murdered his wives and his advisers and he drove his own daughter, Mary, half mad due to his bitterness, hatred and neglect. If there is a hell, I hope he's burning down there!
@gOtHiCxAnGeLxox He also wrote a doctrine defending Roman Catholicism against Martin Luther, fostered an English naval force that his daughter Elizabeth expanded and improved on, and he composed the beautiful song "Greensleeves." Henry was a very spoiled prince who became a very spoiled king, but he was a king who was remarkably well loved by his subjects. Not a Henry fan, but give the devil his due.
@fgonzalez43 Which? "In Defense of the Faith"? Perhaps. I can see that. However, that still leaves "Greensleeves" which he wrote for Katherine of Aragon. From what I have read recently he truly loved Katherine when he was younger. If she'd been able to give him the son he so desperately wanted I think he'd have been quite content to stay with her. The Tudors were a very *new* ruling family dynastically speaking. There were still quite a few Plantagenets still living.
@Chrisiant Not sure where you got your information. "Greensleeves" is a traditional ballad. Even those songs attributed to him "Helas, my love," for example may have also been ghostwritten by William Cornysh.
I did not know this. My information is almost twenty years old. I'm delighted to learn something new, thank you. Even if it does sadly remove some of the remaining shine from Henry's reputation.
@Chrisiant I don't mean to demean Henry. He was very well educated and spoke several languages. But it has been pretty well established that More wrote the "Defence" and Cornysh wrote the songs.
I'm German and I love The Tudors, but Joss Stone's portrayal of Anne seems SO over the top to me. The accent is horrible. It doesn't sound anything like a German person who's speaking English. And why does she keep saying German words inbetween?? So annoying
Am I the only one who notices a difference he announces his two daughters? He says mary but it sounded as if he announced elisabeth with more reverence
@BleuYayme I read somewhere that she looked nothing like the famous portrait of her and that's one of the reasons Henry VIII wasn't too pleased when he finally met her in person
I have a question, who is that woman standing next to Charles Brandon, I saw her with him again when Jane Seymour was giving birth to Edward. Is she his future wife, the one in the last season he was always saying that they were unhappy or something?
Anne of Cleves were the lucky one of the wifes, she got alive out of it,as well as she got rich.
Mary, and Elizabeth was infact greeted by Anne when Mary came into London as monarc,so basicly they did met, also they had a very good friendship with her
henry should have kept AOC his wife because then he would have a claim in cleves as well and if it all works out it also could have been the 1st kaiser of germary
@Snezhinka9 but both daughters were still stripped of their Princess titles and called Lady throughout their lives because the title prince/princess is only given to legitimate children. Though both were put back in the line of succession, both of them were lawfully still considered bastards. Bastard children were allowed to succeed the throne if it could be proven that the father was the king.
Oh the conflicting stories about Anne of Cleves. Truth be told, She was not "a Horse" as they claimed later on, but this was one of the excuses for the divorce. The true reason for the divorce was the Duke of Flanders couldn't provide evidence that her contract to marry the Duke of Lorraine. Which is also why the marriage was never consummated. He feared having an illegitimate son.
The story I read is that he came to Anne of Cleves disguised as a commoner (remember, he was known enjoy sneaking up on Katherine of Aargon, in masque). He then kissed her, and she spat! and continued gazing out of a window.

@Vauthier well yes anne was a very intelligent woman, we can't deny that. she gained her way to the throne by herself, and also.. she was in most of Elizabeth's life, remember henry didn;t care much fro daughter
@Vauthier - yes, he acted according to a Tudor romantic idea, that the lady would recognize her fiance without being told who he was. She didnt catch on and thought Henry was just a perverted lout (which is pretty much what he was in any case). That, combined with her bulky German clothes and lack of knowledge of English customs hurt Henry's pride and it just turned him off though if he had looked closer, he might have liked her. But if he looked closer he wouldnt be Henry viii.
@Vauthier but in fact they became great friends after he re-married. Many historians believe they even shared a bed from time to time when he came to visit her
@CaitlinSk that would not surprise me at all. Henry was known for visiting his ladies for a romp in their own homes... with their families practically putting the rubber on for him lol
It is true that Henry became an evil tyrannical monster, but in his youth he did good things. For instance, he is credited with founding England's navy (or so I've read). But I agree with you that his best accomplishment was fathering both Mary and Elizabeth Tudor, both of whom outshine their younger brother Edward. These girls were proof that the Tudor line should continue through women.
@PiperFreeze06 I believe if Edward had lived longer he would have made a great impact. Ofcourse him being so young and dying so soon resulted in him being overshadowed by his sisters.
@Vauthier Well consider this- Did you know that Elizabeth killed as many Catholics as Mary killed Protestants Mary Tudor went through a lot. King Henry VIII killed her mother slowly, (same with elizabeth) with poison. Mary was forced into chambers, until she signed papers saying she is no longer princess. She was a "bastard" (gosh i hate that name.) and had to take care of little Elizabeth. I think Elizabeth and Mary are both great women in history.
@Tonganpride1000 going on what I know, having lived in England for years and having a British mother, I would say Mary and Elizabeth are both memorable, but for different reasons. While Elizabeth is remembered as a wonderful queen who ruled the golden era of England, Mary is remembered as a savage, psychotic queen. Took care of Elizabeth? Yes, if you call keeping her confined to a castle so that she could keep her eye on her as taking care of her. As for murdering the same amount of ppl, dunno..
@Vauthier@Vauthier She did, look it up. She prosecuted a lot of Catholics during her reign. I'm not saying she was a purely evil woman Elizabeth DID bring the Golden Age in England, but she wasn't a perfect person.
@892lgy7382 Certainly, after the Pope was pleased to write a papal bull declaring that anyone who killed Elizabeth would win his blessing, that she was anathema.
They say he treated Elizabeth very well. I find that odd if he truely believed her mother was a whore. The fact that he bragged about her, spent a lot of money on her household and education, and acknowledged her as his daughter makes me wonder if he felt great guilt for the setup he arranged of Anne.
Hello guys this isn't a documentary it is a show purely created for entertainment not to be historically correct. They probably needed some drama in the show to get ratings up.
I hated how they didn't show the friendship between AOC and Mary, since there are historically know to get along very well. Hopefully some of that will come up in season4
There is, in truth, no reference to 'the Flanders' mare' until well into the 17th century. Henry chose Anne von Kleve-Julich because her brother, the reigning sovereign, was Protestant. It was, therefore a political alliance. Later, with the political picture changed, Anne was no longer necessary, and was divorced, something she accepted with good grace. There is no evidence that she was ugly. Her portrait shows rather the reverse.
So support this: Holbein painted the picture of Anne of Cleve. Holbein remained in Henry's grace, so it can be assumed that Holbein did a proper job in showing Anne's real appearance. Henry would certainly dismiss Holbein if he would thought to be betrayed by Holbein in such an important issue.
You are absolutely correct. Holbein's portrait of Anne shows her to have been - ironically - the most beautiful of Henry's six queens....and Holbein was/is famed for utter veracity of his portraiture - his pictures are almost photographic in their perfection!
I so agree. Anne would to-day be considered the most beautiful of the wives of Henry. I believe his reactions to her at first were that she was wearing German traditional clothing and not those of the English court as he expected of all to do. That would have been a huge mistake on her part. All said there is no evidence that he ever disliked her and he did treat her extremely well. His children adored her always. Elizabeth always treated her like a best friend during her reign.
It is a great pity that Henry did not manage to overcome his aversion to her German dress (which I find so charming!) and her large breasts (the King apparently liked skinny women) because we might have had a more viable heir to the Tudor Dynasty than the sickly Edward. I feel sorry for Anne: she was loved by the King's children but should have had children of her own.
the actress playing anne may be too pretty. henry VIII WAS supposed to be extremely fat and ugly by this point, but they couldn't make john rhys meyers that way cause he's an ireland sex symbol.
I do know that, okay? I've been studying + obsessed with this part of history for long enough to know that. It just proves that, though this is one heck of a stunning show, it's full of innacuracies.
If you believe all the history books then isn't this actress that plays Anne Of Cleves way too pretty? I heard she was meant to be ugly and Henry VIII screamed at Cromwell "I like her not!!!" after first meeting her. Henry had Holbein do a portrait of Anne but the artist made her look great and Henry was furious after they eventually met.
she was actually 1 of the prettier of henry's wives. it's just that, he didn't like her very much as a wife and was more into women like katherine howard (young and pretty) or jane seymour (young, queenly and quiet)
Most actresses end up being too pretty to play unattractive women. It's much harder for an unattractive woman to become an actress. This is what leads to the trope known as "Hollywood Homely."
Looks didn't come into. Many ugly monarchs married attractive women.
Power, status, position, wealth were the main criteria back then, and this is what families wanted for themselves through their daughters. Boleyns, Seymours all pimped their daughters.
i wonder what Mary must be thinking - "when the hell will this old bastard henry stop thinking of his marriages and start thinking about mine for a change?"
By the time Henry married Anne of Cleves, he was a fat, bloated, syphilitic old man with a gouty, rotting leg. Somehow, I don't think a sizzling hunk like Jonathan Rhys Meyers is very well cast in this role!
Ah, bur rexel666, would you watch it if it wasnt ? They have decided not to go with the usual portrayal of Henry Vlll , as they wanted to get a large an audience as poss, and it certainly makes it different, though of course we know its not true to the facts.
jonathan rhys is not half the size of herny in the 1540's i agree they should have pick someone older and more overwieght to play henry, henry was very healthy when he was young but let his health go, many women refused to marry him except for ann of cleves its said he thought she was ugly and ended the marraige becouse her breast were saggy and she did not take baths but i think she was very pretty according to her painting
Even so Henry was very appealing to women in those days because of his wealth. In the 16th century wealth was miles above nice looks. The producers wanted to show how attracted women found him back then.
Neither of them were ever restored as Princesses just restored to the line of succession as Henry was afraid that one son would mean that his country would not be safe and secure. The Tudors just changed that I think.
He did after the Act of Succession 1543 (35 Hen. VIII c.1) in which Mary Tudor and Elizabeth Tudor were both restored as Heirs to the Throne and regained the title of a princess.
She was supposed to be not as pretty and "inexperienced" he wanted someone experienced and pretty and not to mettle in royal affairs, Katherine Howard is supposed to be gorgeous
Am I the only one who completely hates Katherine Howard? well, on the show at least. I can't figure out if it is the actress, the way they have her written or what... but she just bothers me... Anne of Cleves is so sweet and seemed to just want to please the King, and was so nervous about being with him (to be frank, I would too after finding out what he did to Anne Boleyn...).
Well that's basically what Anne of Cleves wanted and was like (and I can't speak on whether or not I like actress the for Katherine Howard because I haven't watch anything past the first season) and I think that's what Katherine Howard was like but you shouldn't hate her because she was what, 15, 14? her uncle made her do all the things she did, she just went along because she was she was a vain little girl who wanted money and clothes and houses
Later on, after Henry meets Katherine Howard. Anne of Cleves stays at the castles and is a member of court. The king referred to her as "my dear sister". He did care for her, but he was a romantic in the fact that he wanted to have a choice made by heart and loin as opposed to politics. The children (besides Mary) really loved her and he did as well. At least he didn't chop her head off! : {
Even a King of England couldn't execute a foreign princess. Executing any of his subjects was not a international affair, executing a foreign dignity would be a different matter. It was the privilege of his daughter Elizabeth to do so.
Anne of Cleves has the grace, elegant manners of a Queen versus Henry VIII who was an obnoxious despot-King by inheritance only. She had the class old Henry never did.
Clever words from Anne. At least, Henry knew that Anne would not make him a scene about the legitimacy of his kids.

@CaitlinSk that would not surprise me at all. Henry was known for visiting his ladies for a romp in their own homes... with their families practically putting the rubber on for him lol
Vauthier 1 year ago 5
@Vauthier
PiperFreeze06 9 months ago
@PiperFreeze06 I believe if Edward had lived longer he would have made a great impact. Ofcourse him being so young and dying so soon resulted in him being overshadowed by his sisters.

@Vauthier and MARY.. geez.

@Tonganpride1000 lol dunno if I would say Bloody Mary is a good thing
Vauthier 4 months ago
@Vauthier Well consider this- Did you know that Elizabeth killed as many Catholics as Mary killed Protestants Mary Tudor went through a lot. King Henry VIII killed her mother slowly, (same with elizabeth) with poison. Mary was forced into chambers, until she signed papers saying she is no longer princess. She was a "bastard" (gosh i hate that name.) and had to take care of little Elizabeth. I think Elizabeth and Mary are both great women in history.
Tonganpride1000 4 months ago 2
@Tonganpride1000 going on what I know, having lived in England for years and having a British mother, I would say Mary and Elizabeth are both memorable, but for different reasons. While Elizabeth is remembered as a wonderful queen who ruled the golden era of England, Mary is remembered as a savage, psychotic queen. Took care of Elizabeth? Yes, if you call keeping her confined to a castle so that she could keep her eye on her as taking care of her. As for murdering the same amount of ppl, dunno..
Vauthier 4 months ago
@Vauthier @Vauthier She did, look it up. She prosecuted a lot of Catholics during her reign. I'm not saying she was a purely evil woman Elizabeth DID bring the Golden Age in England, but she wasn't a perfect person.
892lgy7382 3 months ago
@892lgy7382 Certainly, after the Pope was pleased to write a papal bull declaring that anyone who killed Elizabeth would win his blessing, that she was anathema.
Chrisiant 2 months ago
I wonder if everytime Henry looked at elizabeth he was forced to think of her mother who he executed. He sure would deserve it, git.
hogwartsluv 2 years ago 4
They say he treated Elizabeth very well. I find that odd if he truely believed her mother was a whore. The fact that he bragged about her, spent a lot of money on her household and education, and acknowledged her as his daughter makes me wonder if he felt great guilt for the setup he arranged of Anne.

Hello guys this isn't a documentary it is a show purely created for entertainment not to be historically correct. They probably needed some drama in the show to get ratings up.
TeamJacobTeamLautner 2 years ago
I hated how they didn't show the friendship between AOC and Mary, since there are historically know to get along very well. Hopefully some of that will come up in season4

is this a parallel universe where hot is considered ugly and thin and young is fat and old? man networks have no business trying to tell history

I have only seen season one. Were Anne of Cleves the last queen of his?

no there was katherine howard and katherine parr as well
Raquelzeebob 2 years ago
There is, in truth, no reference to 'the Flanders' mare' until well into the 17th century. Henry chose Anne von Kleve-Julich because her brother, the reigning sovereign, was Protestant. It was, therefore a political alliance. Later, with the political picture changed, Anne was no longer necessary, and was divorced, something she accepted with good grace. There is no evidence that she was ugly. Her portrait shows rather the reverse.
zimnaya 2 years ago
So support this: Holbein painted the picture of Anne of Cleve. Holbein remained in Henry's grace, so it can be assumed that Holbein did a proper job in showing Anne's real appearance. Henry would certainly dismiss Holbein if he would thought to be betrayed by Holbein in such an important issue.
hartmut1164 2 years ago
You are absolutely correct. Holbein's portrait of Anne shows her to have been - ironically - the most beautiful of Henry's six queens....and Holbein was/is famed for utter veracity of his portraiture - his pictures are almost photographic in their perfection!
zimnaya 2 years ago
Elizabeth always treated her like a best friend during her reign.
regszikora 2 years ago
It is a great pity that Henry did not manage to overcome his aversion to her German dress (which I find so charming!) and her large breasts (the King apparently liked skinny women) because we might have had a more viable heir to the Tudor Dynasty than the sickly Edward. I feel sorry for Anne: she was loved by the King's children but should have had children of her own.
zimnaya 2 years ago
there is a theory that Anne of Cleves found Henry extremely revolting: remember his obesity at this time and his stench.
noblebird9094 2 years ago 2
Seriously, if Anne was supposed to be so hideous [which I highly doubt] then Joss Stone is wayy to pretty to play her!
Elizabeth is so sweet is this clip + Mary is like, 'okay, awkward..' Rolf xD
TheFreeSpiritX 2 years ago
the actress playing anne may be too pretty. henry VIII WAS supposed to be extremely fat and ugly by this point, but they couldn't make john rhys meyers that way cause he's an ireland sex symbol.
hollowbastiongrl 2 years ago
I do know that, okay? I've been studying + obsessed with this part of history for long enough to know that. It just proves that, though this is one heck of a stunning show, it's full of innacuracies.
TheFreeSpiritX 2 years ago
i agree. i've been obsessed with the period too, and you're right. great show- lots of inaccuracies.

Blabloo72 2 years ago 3
she was actually 1 of the prettier of henry's wives. it's just that, he didn't like her very much as a wife and was more into women like katherine howard (young and pretty) or jane seymour (young, queenly and quiet)
hippiechick19 2 years ago 6
Most actresses end up being too pretty to play unattractive women. It's much harder for an unattractive woman to become an actress. This is what leads to the trope known as "Hollywood Homely."
glamourchick21 2 years ago 5
Looks didn't come into. Many ugly monarchs married attractive women.
Power, status, position, wealth were the main criteria back then, and this is what families wanted for themselves through their daughters. Boleyns, Seymours all pimped their daughters.

i wonder what Mary must be thinking - "when the hell will this old bastard henry stop thinking of his marriages and start thinking about mine for a change?"

@kshamaf I think until he had an heir and a spare, he felt the need to keep Mary around.

By the time Henry married Anne of Cleves, he was a fat, bloated, syphilitic old man with a gouty, rotting leg. Somehow, I don't think a sizzling hunk like Jonathan Rhys Meyers is very well cast in this role!
rexel666 2 years ago 5
Ah, bur rexel666, would you watch it if it wasnt ? They have decided not to go with the usual portrayal of Henry Vlll , as they wanted to get a large an audience as poss, and it certainly makes it different, though of course we know its not true to the facts.
samsagitarias 2 years ago 4
jonathan rhys is not half the size of herny in the 1540's i agree they should have pick someone older and more overwieght to play henry, henry was very healthy when he was young but let his health go, many women refused to marry him except for ann of cleves its said he thought she was ugly and ended the marraige becouse her breast were saggy and she did not take baths but i think she was very pretty according to her painting
coolbrian15 2 years ago 3
Even so Henry was very appealing to women in those days because of his wealth. In the 16th century wealth was miles above nice looks. The producers wanted to show how attracted women found him back then.
laurenlfc48 2 years ago 3
Henry was an idiot - Anne was so sweet.
Nutera1 2 years ago 3
Neither of them were ever restored as Princesses just restored to the line of succession as Henry was afraid that one son would mean that his country would not be safe and secure. The Tudors just changed that I think.
SizeDoubleZero 2 years ago 3
I thought that at this time Mary was called a princess and Elizabeth was "Lady Elizabeth" but he refers to both his daughters as princesses.
Roxanneactress 2 years ago 4
Yeah I don't think that Henry ever in his lifetime refered to them as princess after their mothers deaths at least thats what I've read
TheArtist1508 2 years ago 2
He did after the Act of Succession 1543 (35 Hen. VIII c.1) in which Mary Tudor and Elizabeth Tudor were both restored as Heirs to the Throne and regained the title of a princess.

MsMixis 2 years ago
She was supposed to be not as pretty and "inexperienced" he wanted someone experienced and pretty and not to mettle in royal affairs, Katherine Howard is supposed to be gorgeous
KatherineParr 2 years ago
Am I the only one who completely hates Katherine Howard? well, on the show at least. I can't figure out if it is the actress, the way they have her written or what... but she just bothers me... Anne of Cleves is so sweet and seemed to just want to please the King, and was so nervous about being with him (to be frank, I would too after finding out what he did to Anne Boleyn...).
doda 2 years ago 2
Well that's basically what Anne of Cleves wanted and was like (and I can't speak on whether or not I like actress the for Katherine Howard because I haven't watch anything past the first season) and I think that's what Katherine Howard was like but you shouldn't hate her because she was what, 15, 14? her uncle made her do all the things she did, she just went along because she was she was a vain little girl who wanted money and clothes and houses
KatherineParr 2 years ago
17 when she married
Jamestopboy 2 years ago 3
Later on, after Henry meets Katherine Howard. Anne of Cleves stays at the castles and is a member of court. The king referred to her as "my dear sister". He did care for her, but he was a romantic in the fact that he wanted to have a choice made by heart and loin as opposed to politics. The children (besides Mary) really loved her and he did as well. At least he didn't chop her head off! : {

Even a King of England couldn't execute a foreign princess. Executing any of his subjects was not a international affair, executing a foreign dignity would be a different matter. It was the privilege of his daughter Elizabeth to do so.
hartmut1164 2 years ago
FUCK YOU HENRY. i officially hate him after this episode. the way he treated anne and prevented his daughters happiness with phillip.

Anne of Cleves has the grace, elegant manners of a Queen versus Henry VIII who was an obnoxious despot-King by inheritance only. She had the class old Henry never did.
