I was almost 13 when I was watching it. In general I was a child who knew not much about the good music even if I had my music hero in Enya already. But I remember the moment she started to sing and I was absolutely in awe. And she has won. I was bouncing like a happy rabbit when it happened. ESC before 2000., totally different world! now it's all about some crazy guys jumpin' all around the stage and all those crazy effects! before I watched this video I tought that it never been and it will never be good music on eurovision, but seeing the winners of ESC before the 2001. (Denmark in 2000. was the last remnant of once a good event), I see that there is 1000 times more soul and real music than now! I wish i wasn't born in 1995!

@WoollyMammoth16 It sounds as if you're not so old, anyway you have absolutely right. Around the late 80's something happened and the whole event more or less sank to the bottom, where it is still. The best part is that esc has been relatively stable and mostly very good throughout the years, and extends all the way back to the early 60's. And a large portion is still there if you search.

Televoting ruined Eurovision. Now all songs from all countries sound the same, they're all in English, they're all disco acrobatic spectaculars where the actual song is an afterthought.

This song is the reason why we have televoting today. Admittedly, it was a pretty good song but it had absolutely zero commercial appeal which is why it only charted in Ireland. The UK entry however finished in 8th place and yet it went on to sell millions of copies around Europe. This showed that the opinion of the judges may have been different from the viewing public, hence televoting was trialed the year after in 1997 and widely introduced in 1998.

If anything, it was Norway that was cheating, since the contest rules prohibit instrumental entries. Plus the Norwegians had a very Irish-sounding tune with an Irish fiddler, a tin whistle etc. They were obviously trying to beat the Irish (who had won 3 times in a row) at their own game. And fair play to them for winning, but the Irish came back the next year and showed them how the masters do it!

Evidently, she could not hear herself properly because she's out of tune frequently. Where is her monitor? It can't be that she doesn't know how to sing; she's professionally trained. It's obvious that the problem is simply that she can't hear herself. It's a shame that the quality of her performance was sacrificed for the sake of a "clean" stage. The stage manager should be taken out and shot.

Please re-read my original comment; it was NOT critical of Ms. Quinn as a singer. Rather, it's more likely that she couldn't her herself. Apparently you've never performed onstage, but I have. It is not possible to hear oneself and sing in tune without proper audio monitors, and none are visible in the video.

I beg to differ. Yes, Celtic woman's version is more refined and with better production values. And yes, I like the band in general.

Eimear went home on the first plane the next morning to sit her University finals in Ireland. She never let the win go to her head... I hope she celebrated once her exams were over! Excellent song... once again the Irish show how to win in style.

Ireland + Celtic music would get a top 5 spot in the Eurovision easy with Juries.

An example, Dervish came last in 2007 with a Celtic song but the Albanian juries awarded them 7 points. If Ireland came with a much better celtic song all the juries would award them points in the double figures and If the song was awesome enough to attract televoters then Ireland could make the top 5 easily.

Interesting point about Dervish DenmarkEurovision, the Albanian telephone vote failed and that's why the jury was used. I have no doubt that the sean-nos sound would be appreciated in the Balkans and the East of Europe whose countries' folk songs share a similar vein. Especially now that the juries' vote have returned permanently. Dervish's huge mistake was to make Cathy Jordan sing in English.

It was costing the national broadcaster (RTE) a fortune to host the competition every year. As a result, they had to offset these costs - they stared doing national American Idol style competitions to pick the Eurovision song. The main problem there is that the biggest group of voters in these kinds of competitions are teenage girls. So this policy guaranteed 2 things:

1. RTE made a profit on the whole thing.

2. Our entry was guaranteed to be terrible.

Explain Norway's "Nocturne" in 95, then. Italy won in 90, Sweden in 91, Israel in 98 and Sweden again '99. All in their native tongues (but for Israel's winner which had some English). Ireland has entered the competition before with songs sung in Irish (most notably 1972's "Ceol an ghrá") but never came anywhere, because nobody understood the lyrics. Most of the songs we've presented since have been English as a result. I find nothing pretentious about the song, and the lyrics do the job.
