  • But the song is awesome, ofc. But not in her voice.

  • She is singing this really bad.

  • one of the BEST songs and BEST winnings in the eurovision song contest.1996 an absolute fantastic eur.-year!

  • Did anyone else see a swear word go across the screen??? O.o?!?!

  • i must say that it is surprisingly repetitive!! :S

  • whats the song at 0:40

  • DAMM this is so GOOD. i love the sound of it.

  • The song starts at >>>> 1:30 <<<< people

  • I was almost 13 when I was watching it. In general I was a child who knew not much about the good music even if I had my music hero in Enya already. But I remember the moment she started to sing and I was absolutely in awe. And she has won. I was bouncing like a happy rabbit when it happened. Eimar has made me feel like I was living in a better world.

  • Is she Ally McBeal?

  • one of t worst winning songs of t 90s!

  • @markguest36 I don't think so. Much better than "Nocturne" of Secret Garden

  • @markguest36 Both of Sweden's winning efforts were way worse than this.

  • I don't know why this won. Okay, it's not very bad, but in that year the United Kingdom was the best!

  • It's Fiona from Shameless!

  • Gorgeous lady !! Amazing song.... Love it !!!

  • ahh, the winning song that forced eurovision to introduce televoting...

  • i always get goosebumps when i hear this song...i believe i was celtic in another life :)

  • The real secret to winning at Eurovision? Get Noel Kelehan to conduct the orchestra. :p

  • 11 dislikes ??? WTF!!

  • I love this song but I have to say Celtic Woman has a better version.

  • @ChicKa0311

I have listened to both and will hold no prejudice as to who,s is better. They both do it proper

    justice

  • ESC before 2000., totally different world! now it's all about some crazy guys jumpin' all around the stage and all those crazy effects! before I watched this video I tought that it never been and it will never be good music on eurovision, but seeing the winners of ESC before the 2001. (Denmark in 2000. was the last remnant of once a good event), I see that there is 1000 times more soul and real music than now! I wish i wasn't born in 1995!

  • @WoollyMammoth16 It sounds as if you're not so old, anyway you have absolutely right. Around the late 80's something happened and the whole event more or less sank to the bottom, where it is still. The best part is that esc has been relatively stable and mostly very good throughout the years, and extends all the way back to the early 60's. And a large portion is still there if you search.

  • This is a decent composition. But let's not fool ourselves, Jedward are far, far more suited to the utteryly tastless and tacky contest that is the eurovision.

  • Ireland ont the ESC in their glory days!

  • noel kelehan is legend!

  • this song should have been in lotr <3

  • She looks like Ross Geller's ex-wife, Susan.... :P

  • Ah This Was Song In 1996 , The Year i Was Born,, Loveit;; What Ever Happened To Us? We Lost Our Touch Now In The Eurovision We Try Be Like The Rest By Picking a Pair Of Lunatics.. ?.

  • Without doubt the greatest Eurovision song ever. Fills you full of pride. And now we have Jedward to represent us, the torch has been passed.

  • This reminds me of Lord Of The Rings. Her dress and name Eimear. Maybe the best eurovision song I have heard.

  • Where do I know this song from? I was 5 in 1996, couldn't have watched it back then.

  • @Myriejj maybe you could have heard it with Celtic Woman?

  • OH MY GOD WHAT A SONG!WHAT A MELODY!WHAT A VOICE!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Back when the negative term "Song festival material" wasn't invented yet... they new how to make great songs! This is my all time favourite!!!

  • BEST EUROVISION SONG EVER!!! I once played it live in front of people in the piano for a friend that was singing it!!! Just UNREAL song!!! Lisa Kelly sings it even BETTER (if that's possible!!!)!!!

  • watch?v=j1iUqdp5CMc&feature=related

  • WOW! 1996 was the last time Ireland won the Eurovision. It was a competing different competition back then though. If we sent this nowadays we would probably come in last

  • What language is that man speaking ?

  • @MsLKSF

    in dutch

  • The last Irish winner. It was really good though.

  • Televoting ruined Eurovision. Now all songs from all countries sound the same, they're all in English, they're all disco acrobatic spectaculars where the actual song is an afterthought.

  • This song is the reason why we have televoting today. Admittedly, it was a pretty good song but it had absolutely zero commercial appeal which is why it only charted in Ireland. The UK entry however finished in 8th place and yet it went on to sell millions of copies around Europe. This showed that the opinion of the judges may have been different from the viewing public, hence televoting was trialed the year after in 1997 and widely introduced in 1998.

  • after 1 year secret garden's victory i think this is like cheating :) but like it :)

  • رائع الاغنية

  • @okannnl

If anything, it was Norway that was cheating, since the contest rules prohibit instrumental entries. Plus the Norwegians had a very Irish-sounding tune with an Irish fiddler, a tin whistle etc. They were obviously trying to beat the Irish (who had won 3 times in a row) at their own game. And fair play to them for winning, but the Irish came back the next year and showed them how the masters do it!

  • @deathray32

    you might be right :))

  • @deathray32: Actually Norway's folklore is totally different from Ireland. Yes, the guy played violin but the melody does not sound like Celtic music at all.

  • @deathray32 Buddy, Norwegian song in 1995 sounds NOTHING like Irish folk. What are you talking about? Do you even know Norwegian folk music? Because it doesn't look like it.

Anyway, this and Portuguese song were the BEST in 1996. Eurovision should be about ethnic songs, not about generic pop pseudo-Shakira, pseudo-Justin Timberlake with cheesy electronic sung in English. This is EUROvision, not ANGLO-SAXONICvision.

  • @ImaginaryVoncroy: You mean AMERICANvision!!!

  • @ImaginaryVoncroy

I've probably listened to a lot more Norwegian folk music than you have, Irish music. When's the last time you heard a tin whistle in Norwegian music? Never! I don't begrudge them winning in 95 but it's just dishonest to attempt to deny that they were trying to cash in on Ireland's success in the ECS.

  • @ImaginaryVoncroy No, it is a song contest, no less, no more. This is certainly not a folk music festival. well, tihs won has actually won. According to my musical taste and in comparison to some other contenders that year I would say, that this was one of the weakest of the night.

  • @KischteBier

Well, according to this, your musical taste SUCKS!

  • @WoollyMammoth16 well, that's what you do every night, i guess

  • @ImaginaryVoncroy Totally agree, I miss the days when every country sang in their own language

  • i am from lithuania . at the moment i live in ireland and i think that this song is adorable !

  • Evidently, she could not hear herself properly because she's out of tune frequently. Where is her monitor? It can't be that she doesn't know how to sing; she's professionally trained. It's obvious that the problem is simply that she can't hear herself. It's a shame that the quality of her performance was sacrificed for the sake of a "clean" stage. The stage manager should be taken out and shot.

  • @freevito what?? i'm sorry i think the girl sang fantastic!! her only voice is magical :)

  • @Lovelypao88 If you enjoyed the performance, then I'm happy for you. What I think shouldn't matter. But the fact remains that she DOES sing out of tune for much of the song. Please re-read my original comment; it was NOT critical of Ms. Quinn as a singer. Rather, it's more likely that she couldn't her herself. Apparently you've never performed onstage, but I have. It is not possible to hear oneself and sing in tune without proper audio monitors, and none are visible in the video.

  • sorry...she does not sing out of tune!.....its called sean nos singing...its a style of irish singing- oh and i do perform on stage so i do know what i do know what im talking about!

  • She is so adorable

  • peaceful song angel voice

  • her voice is shiiit.. Celtic woman is way better

  • Ireland has the best music in the world! they can enchant and carry you away. It´s just like flying over the irish highlands! Jesus, Eimear is a godess!

  • Eimear Quinn amazing voice ,,, u gotta love dat song

  • ale wyjec :/

  • orgasmic!

  • Irlanda chupando rueda de la música "a la irlandesa" de Secret Garden el año anterior. The Voice no le llega a Nocturne a la altura del betún, Mal ganador ese año. Añoro a Johnny Logan y Linda Martin.

  • the folk music of Ireland scores now not good !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • and yeah i swear if Ireland's not going to send songs like this again they'll never win...

btw:i bet that Terry Wogan was like...oh $^&# they're gonna win again -_-

  • @esc4all You do know Wogan is Irish?

  • @VonKlitzing hehe i did not know that

but then he probably was tired of seeing his country win year after year...i think :),maybe not

  • @VonKlitzing

Wogan is a professional paddy. I despise him.

  • one of the single songs i like in 96,and one of my all-time favorites

    12 from Romania :D

  • There is so many songs similar to this one...so boring...I would prefere Portugal to win this year!

  • Comment removed

  • Whereas this is a beautiful song, the winner should've been Dan Ar Braz (and his band). Just for the balls he had to sing in Breton.

  • Ireland also has excellent song this year in Oslo !!!

  • why can`t irland sent such music to ESC again...???

  • @1010201018

I can garuntee you, this would not win today.

Sure we sent a traditional Ireland Eurovision song this year and it failed big time

  • What has happenened to eurovision....is not about songs or voices anymore :(

  • @glamrockins It's about satellites...WHAT?

  • is rubbish nw the europvison just all politces nt music no more it shudo be call polticevison

  • @jedq what in gods name is that politcal in the ESC? Did any kind of politicans talk about it, did they vote,...?? Or are you talking about us germans winning this year just because of our politcians?? Then you should look back in ESC history and you`ll notice that if our politicans would be that powerfull there, we would have won more often in the past 28 year, wouldn`t we,...?

  • how did uk come bottom 2008 when spian was bood off i no wt u meen but some country vote poltican nt all some rune it

  • @jedq wanker

  • kacinci siradalardi acaba ?? sonuncu heralde hahahaha :D

  • have faith :) xx

  • I dont get it? Why cant ireland put something like that in again...nice irish music which every one loves...well this years isnt bad like...although, wnt break threw the block voting

  • absoloutly enchanting great song!

  • absoloutly enchanting great song!

  • Celtic Woman is better, sorry!

  • eimear quinn is from my hometown of dundalk, so are the corrs!

  • @thefruit8 i neevr knew she was from dundalk! just up the road..traditional irish music is the best, should have an entry like this again

  • @thefruit8 I thought she was from Maynooth!!! Now I know the truth.. thanks for the info!!

  • she was 18 not 16!!!! nd dana was supposedly 18 at the time of her win not 16!!!!

  • Best Irish entry! it's so beautiful!

  • I beg to differ. Yes, Celtic woman's version is more refined and with better production values. And yes, I like the band in general.

    BUT

I think that they have lost the essence of this song. It's in the fragile voice of a sixteen year old girl and in simplicity of instrumental track. That's what I fell in love with back in 96 and now.

  • I honestly prefer Celtic Woman's version. I hope Celtic Woman will represent Ireland to compete and win Eurovision in the future.

  • inspiring!!love the song and her 'voice'!

  • i was born in 1996 ! love this song!

  • This was such a great moment for Brendan Graham. His second win as a composer for Eurovision (1994 was the other winner but he also entered in 1976 and 1985)

Eimear went home on the first plane the next morning to sit her University finals in Ireland. She never let the win go to her head... I hope she celebrated once her exams were over! Excellent song... once again the Irish show how to win in style.

  • It's a real pride for me to have Celtic roots when I'm listening to this wonderful (and so simple, typical Celtic) song !

  • She has an AMAZING voice, but I think Lisa performs this specific song better. :C

  • She has such a beautiful voice. I think this is one of the best eurovision songs I've ever heard.

  • @TomasuDexter: And she's only 18!

  • @TomasuDexter watch?v=j1iUqdp5CMc&feature=related

  • Ireland + Celtic music would get a top 5 spot in the Eurovision easy with Juries.

An example, Dervish came last in 2007 with a Celtic song but the Albanian juries awarded them 7 points. If Ireland came with a much better celtic song all the juries would award them points in the double figures and If the song was awesome enough to attract televoters then Ireland could make the top 5 easily.

New things are not always better. mabey countries should stick to what they are good at

  • Interesting point about Dervish DenmarkEurovision, the Albanian telephone vote failed and that's why the jury was used. I have no doubt that the sean-nos sound would be appreciated in the Balkans and the East of Europe whose countries' folk songs share a similar vein. Especially now that the juries' vote have returned permanently. Dervish's huge mistake was to make Cathy Jordan sing in English.

  • Yes I totaly agree with you

  • This is haunting, I always get Shivers..

1995 & 1996 produced the best two eurovision winners.

    'Nocturne' & 'The Voice'

These two songs are quality eurovision songs..

Ireland send something like this again, Sure you can't get any better <3

  • We should bring back good old Johnny Logan, he will win us a few more titles!

  • How on earth did this beat Gina G "Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit" which won a grammy award!

  • Doesn't say much for the Grammys !

  • composer & lyricist, Brendan Graham also wrote for 1994 winning song, "Rock 'n' Roll Kids"

  • Proud to be Irish, when i hear this song!!!!! haunting!!!!

  • Greatest song ever in Eurovision

  • i agree!

  • I miss THIS Ireland in ESC.. Where did the quality go?

  • Quality? Or pandering to traditional stereotypes?

  • It's a new song presented in an old style. Old does not automatically mean it is stereotypical. I don't understand the animosity some have towards this song. If you don't like it, why are you here at all?

  • What a poor excuse - ".....why are you here at all?" People want to see the winner of 96 - what are they supposed to do? Some didnt like it & have said so. ".old doesnt mean stereotypical" - true but not in this case

  • This song has both its fans & detractors in Ireland. I've seen & heard Eimear porform it live & was impressed. IMO far from being the best Irish song ever, nor the best of 96 (Norway gets that). Without rehashing old debates, with all due & genuine respect, I do think there are things about our psyche (Irish) you dont get.

  • ho ho ho.........there is NO such thing as an Irish psyche so please dont try that on me. I aint your typical YTuber! come on Seamus

  • Now, why do you just rubbush things others say? Is it for enjoyment? Is it a strange manifestation of a peculiar psyche? Diglmelon!!

  • Because it is rubbish! And dont drag evrybody into this argument - there is NO such thing as the Irish psyche!

  • But you havent yet answered my questions!

  • I now have - on yer profile

  • You have it wrong there. As any Irish person will tell you.

  • It buggered off after Ireland decided it didn't want to win anymore, because hosting the show was costing us too much money! ;)

  • Another poor excuse ..........Ireland ( like the UK) had to realise to buck up their ideas. In Irelands case, jumping into the 21st century would help - I personally really liked your entry this year & it should have qualified & its a huge step in the right direction.

  • @Ludddee Here's what I think happened:

It was costing the national broadcaster (RTE) a fortune to host the competition every year. As a result, they had to offset these costs - they stared doing national American Idol style competitions to pick the Eurovision song. The main problem there is that the biggest group of voters in these kinds of competitions are teenage girls. So this policy guaranteed 2 things:

    1. RTE made a profit on the whole thing.

    2. Our entry was guaranteed to be terrible.

  • @BigBadRascal

Put it better than anyone, spot on! I don't think we will ever win it again or finish in the top 10 again sadly.

  • @BigBadRascal - bet you've seen that father ted episode :P

  • @TmoneyBallhar Yeah, I love that episode. My opinion differs slightly from it though. I don't necessairly think RTE concocted the whole thing just so we'd lose (that may or may not be the case - most likely not). It probably made sense to try and make some money on it, however the consequence, intended or not, is that our songs are guaranteed rubbish.

  • @Ludddee I Have wondred the same since the last ten years! :/

  • @Ludddee eastern european soviet block why is iseral in the esc its in the middle east.

  • @Ludddee The Irish public have a choice of six songs that have been short listed for eurovision but year upon year its the same dancy cheesy typical europop because apparently that sells in eurovision, i'm sure sure there are many fabulous songs that have been submitted by very talented song writers all over the country but unfortunately the Irish public never get to hear them, its a shame I wonder whats in those this year. oh wait its Jedward, goodnight folks.

  • GREAAAT SONG¡

  • I like very much the Lisa Kelly's version but Eimear has a very peaceful and clear voice and her version is very good too. Thank you for share this video with us, Euroencyclopedic. =)

  • I love Eimear Quinn!

one of the songs in Eurovision!

  • Didn't like it sorry. I find myself wanting to fall asleep when it's on.

  • Check out Celtic Woman - The Voice and you'll change your mind

  • what language speaks the comentator? dutch ?

  • yes, it's Dutch

  • I think we need another Pres girl to win it for us ;)

  • One of our best winners...

Only second to 1994's Charlie McGettigan and Paul Harringtons' Rock and Roll Kids...

  • Completely Agree

  • Explain why it is overrated and Pretentious, please.

  • i think its a total vocal show off and the lyrics are nothing to speak off . there were better songs that year and in 1994 and in 1992 . i liked " in your eyes " but that's about it . during the 90's almost only english-speaking songs were winning no matter how boring they were . i didnt like most uk and maltese entries during that time either

  • oh so that was the rest of europes excuse. everyone knows ireland and UK have been singers in europe. We are second only to USA for globally successfully singers

  • Explain Norway's "Nocturne" in 95, then. Italy won in 90, Sweden in 91, Israel in 98 and Sweden again '99. All in their native tongues (but for Israel's winner which had some English). Ireland has entered the competition before with songs sung in Irish (most notably 1972's "Ceol an ghrá") but never came anywhere, because nobody understood the lyrics. Most of the songs we've presented since have been English as a result. I find nothing pretentious about the song, and the lyrics do the job.

  • U2 & Beatles - That is what is overrated.

  • @greeko25 I think singing songs that are desperately trying to be clever and profound are pretentious, simplicity is so often the best. This song doesnt pretend to be anything, maybe its statement is too hard and in your face to swallow for some people. It taps into archaic thinking and folklore, something which is important to everyone even if they do not realize how much it affects their lives and how they see the world.

  • What a wonderful voice!

  • thanx for posting this
