I was almost 13 when I was watching it. In general I was a child who knew not much about the good music even if I had my music hero in Enya already. But I remember the moment she started to sing and I was absolutely in awe. And she has won. I was bouncing like a happy rabbit when it happened. Eimar has made me feel like I was living in a better world.
ESC before 2000., totally different world! now it's all about some crazy guys jumpin' all around the stage and all those crazy effects! before I watched this video I tought that it never been and it will never be good music on eurovision, but seeing the winners of ESC before the 2001. (Denmark in 2000. was the last remnant of once a good event), I see that there is 1000 times more soul and real music than now! I wish i wasn't born in 1995!
@WoollyMammoth16 It sounds as if you're not so old, anyway you have absolutely right. Around the late 80's something happened and the whole event more or less sank to the bottom, where it is still. The best part is that esc has been relatively stable and mostly very good throughout the years, and extends all the way back to the early 60's. And a large portion is still there if you search.
This is a decent composition. But let's not fool ourselves, Jedward are far, far more suited to the utteryly tastless and tacky contest that is the eurovision.
Ah This Was Song In 1996 , The Year i Was Born,, Loveit;; What Ever Happened To Us? We Lost Our Touch Now In The Eurovision We Try Be Like The Rest By Picking a Pair Of Lunatics.. ?.
BEST EUROVISION SONG EVER!!! I once played it live in front of people in the piano for a friend that was singing it!!! Just UNREAL song!!! Lisa Kelly sings it even BETTER (if that's possible!!!)!!!
WOW! 1996 was the last time Ireland won the Eurovision. It was a competing different competition back then though. If we sent this nowadays we would probably come in last
Televoting ruined Eurovision. Now all songs from all countries sound the same, they're all in English, they're all disco acrobatic spectaculars where the actual song is an afterthought.
This song is the reason why we have televoting today. Admittedly, it was a pretty good song but it had absolutely zero commercial appeal which is why it only charted in Ireland. The UK entry however finished in 8th place and yet it went on to sell millions of copies around Europe. This showed that the opinion of the judges may have been different from the viewing public, hence televoting was trialed the year after in 1997 and widely introduced in 1998.
If anything, it was Norway that was cheating, since the contest rules prohibit instrumental entries. Plus the Norwegians had a very Irish-sounding tune with an Irish fiddler, a tin whistle etc. They were obviously trying to beat the Irish (who had won 3 times in a row) at their own game. And fair play to them for winning, but the Irish came back the next year and showed them how the masters do it!
@deathray32: Actually Norway's folklore is totally different from Ireland. Yes, the guy played violin but the melody does not sound like Celtic music at all.
@deathray32 Buddy, Norwegian song in 1995 sounds NOTHING like Irish folk. What are you talking about? Do you even know Norwegian folk music? Because it doesn't look like it.
Anyway, this and Portuguese song were the BEST in 1996. Eurovision should be about ethnic songs, not about generic pop pseudo-Shakira, pseudo-Justin Timberlake with cheesy electronic sung in English. This is EUROvision, not ANGLO-SAXONICvision.
I've probably listened to a lot more Norwegian folk music than you have, Irish music. When's the last time you heard a tin whistle in Norwegian music? Never! I don't begrudge them winning in 95 but it's just dishonest to attempt to deny that they were trying to cash in on Ireland's success in the ECS.
@ImaginaryVoncroy No, it is a song contest, no less, no more. This is certainly not a folk music festival. well, tihs won has actually won. According to my musical taste and in comparison to some other contenders that year I would say, that this was one of the weakest of the night.

Añoro a Johnny Logan y Linda Martin.
@jedq what in gods name is that politcal in the ESC? Did any kind of politicans talk about it, did they vote,...?? Or are you talking about us germans winning this year just because of our politcians?? Then you should look back in ESC history and you`ll notice that if our politicans would be that powerfull there, we would have won more often in the past 28 year, wouldn`t we,...?
I dont get it? Why cant ireland put something like that in again...nice irish music which every one loves...well this years isnt bad like...although, wnt break threw the block voting
I beg to differ. Yes, Celtic woman's version is more refined and with better production values. And yes, I like the band in general.
BUT
I think that they have lost the essence of this song. It's in the fragile voice of a sixteen year old girl and in simplicity of instrumental track. That's what I fell in love with back in 96 and now.
This was such a great moment for Brendan Graham. His second win as a composer for Eurovision (1994 was the other winner but he also entered in 1976 and 1985)
Eimear went home on the first plane the next morning to sit her University finals in Ireland. She never let the win go to her head... I hope she celebrated once her exams were over! Excellent song... once again the Irish show how to win in style.
Ireland + Celtic music would get a top 5 spot in the Eurovision easy with Juries.
An example, Dervish came last in 2007 with a Celtic song but the Albanian juries awarded them 7 points. If Ireland came with a much better celtic song all the juries would award them points in the double figures and If the song was awesome enough to attract televoters then Ireland could make the top 5 easily.
New things are not always better. mabey countries should stick to what they are good at
Interesting point about Dervish DenmarkEurovision, the Albanian telephone vote failed and that's why the jury was used. I have no doubt that the sean-nos sound would be appreciated in the Balkans and the East of Europe whose countries' folk songs share a similar vein. Especially now that the juries' vote have returned permanently. Dervish's huge mistake was to make Cathy Jordan sing in English.
It's a new song presented in an old style. Old does not automatically mean it is stereotypical. I don't understand the animosity some have towards this song. If you don't like it, why are you here at all?
What a poor excuse - ".....why are you here at all?" People want to see the winner of 96 - what are they supposed to do? Some didnt like it & have said so. ".old doesnt mean stereotypical" - true but not in this case
This song has both its fans & detractors in Ireland. I've seen & heard Eimear porform it live & was impressed. IMO far from being the best Irish song ever, nor the best of 96 (Norway gets that). Without rehashing old debates, with all due & genuine respect, I do think there are things about our psyche (Irish) you dont get.
Another poor excuse ..........Ireland ( like the UK) had to realise to buck up their ideas. In Irelands case, jumping into the 21st century would help - I personally really liked your entry this year & it should have qualified & its a huge step in the right direction.
It was costing the national broadcaster (RTE) a fortune to host the competition every year. As a result, they had to offset these costs - they stared doing national American Idol style competitions to pick the Eurovision song. The main problem there is that the biggest group of voters in these kinds of competitions are teenage girls. So this policy guaranteed 2 things:
@TmoneyBallhar Yeah, I love that episode. My opinion differs slightly from it though. I don't necessairly think RTE concocted the whole thing just so we'd lose (that may or may not be the case - most likely not). It probably made sense to try and make some money on it, however the consequence, intended or not, is that our songs are guaranteed rubbish.
@Ludddee The Irish public have a choice of six songs that have been short listed for eurovision but year upon year its the same dancy cheesy typical europop because apparently that sells in eurovision, i'm sure sure there are many fabulous songs that have been submitted by very talented song writers all over the country but unfortunately the Irish public never get to hear them, its a shame I wonder whats in those this year. oh wait its Jedward, goodnight folks.
I like very much the Lisa Kelly's version but Eimear has a very peaceful and clear voice and her version is very good too. Thank you for share this video with us, Euroencyclopedic. =)
i think its a total vocal show off and the lyrics are nothing to speak off . there were better songs that year and in 1994 and in 1992 . i liked " in your eyes " but that's about it . during the 90's almost only english-speaking songs were winning no matter how boring they were . i didnt like most uk and maltese entries during that time either
oh so that was the rest of europes excuse. everyone knows ireland and UK have been singers in europe. We are second only to USA for globally successfully singers
Explain Norway's "Nocturne" in 95, then. Italy won in 90, Sweden in 91, Israel in 98 and Sweden again '99. All in their native tongues (but for Israel's winner which had some English). Ireland has entered the competition before with songs sung in Irish (most notably 1972's "Ceol an ghrá") but never came anywhere, because nobody understood the lyrics. Most of the songs we've presented since have been English as a result. I find nothing pretentious about the song, and the lyrics do the job.
@greeko25 I think singing songs that are desperately trying to be clever and profound are pretentious, simplicity is so often the best. This song doesnt pretend to be anything, maybe its statement is too hard and in your face to swallow for some people. It taps into archaic thinking and folklore, something which is important to everyone even if they do not realize how much it affects their lives and how they see the world.
But the song is awesome, ofc. But not in her voice.

I miss THIS Ireland in ESC.. Where did the quality go?
Ludddee 2 years ago 51
Quality? Or pandering to traditional stereotypes?
lwsmackie4 2 years ago
It's a new song presented in an old style. Old does not automatically mean it is stereotypical. I don't understand the animosity some have towards this song. If you don't like it, why are you here at all?
Quessir 2 years ago
What a poor excuse - ".....why are you here at all?" People want to see the winner of 96 - what are they supposed to do? Some didnt like it & have said so. ".old doesnt mean stereotypical" - true but not in this case
lwsmackie4 2 years ago
This song has both its fans & detractors in Ireland. I've seen & heard Eimear porform it live & was impressed. IMO far from being the best Irish song ever, nor the best of 96 (Norway gets that). Without rehashing old debates, with all due & genuine respect, I do think there are things about our psyche (Irish) you dont get.
ESCsince1968 2 years ago
ho ho ho.........there is NO such thing as an Irish psyche so please dont try that on me. I aint your typical YTuber! come on Seamus
lwsmackie4 2 years ago
Now, why do you just rubbush things others say? Is it for enjoyment? Is it a strange manifestation of a peculiar psyche? Diglmelon!!
ESCsince1968 2 years ago
Because it is rubbish! And dont drag evrybody into this argument - there is NO such thing as the Irish psyche!

You have it wrong there. As any Irish person will tell you.

It buggered off after Ireland decided it didn't want to win anymore, because hosting the show was costing us too much money! ;)
Quessir 2 years ago 4
Another poor excuse ..........Ireland ( like the UK) had to realise to buck up their ideas. In Irelands case, jumping into the 21st century would help - I personally really liked your entry this year & it should have qualified & its a huge step in the right direction.
lwsmackie4 2 years ago
@Ludddee Here's what I think happened:
1. RTE made a profit on the whole thing.
2. Our entry was guaranteed to be terrible.

@BigBadRascal
Put it better than anyone, spot on! I don't think we will ever win it again or finish in the top 10 again sadly.

@BigBadRascal - bet you've seen that father ted episode :P
TmoneyBallyhar 1 year ago
@TmoneyBallhar Yeah, I love that episode. My opinion differs slightly from it though. I don't necessairly think RTE concocted the whole thing just so we'd lose (that may or may not be the case - most likely not). It probably made sense to try and make some money on it, however the consequence, intended or not, is that our songs are guaranteed rubbish.

@Ludddee I Have wondred the same since the last ten years! :/

@Ludddee eastern european soviet block why is iseral in the esc its in the middle east.
mikedrem 1 year ago
@Ludddee The Irish public have a choice of six songs that have been short listed for eurovision but year upon year its the same dancy cheesy typical europop because apparently that sells in eurovision, i'm sure sure there are many fabulous songs that have been submitted by very talented song writers all over the country but unfortunately the Irish public never get to hear them, its a shame I wonder whats in those this year. oh wait its Jedward, goodnight folks.

overrated and pretentious

Explain why it is overrated and Pretentious, please.
crisis1991 2 years ago
i think its a total vocal show off and the lyrics are nothing to speak off . there were better songs that year and in 1994 and in 1992 . i liked " in your eyes " but that's about it . during the 90's almost only english-speaking songs were winning no matter how boring they were . i didnt like most uk and maltese entries during that time either
greeko25 2 years ago
oh so that was the rest of europes excuse. everyone knows ireland and UK have been singers in europe.

U2 & Beatles - That is what is overrated.
Zimon1987 2 years ago
@greeko25 I think singing songs that are desperately trying to be clever and profound are pretentious, simplicity is so often the best. This song doesnt pretend to be anything, maybe its statement is too hard and in your face to swallow for some people. It taps into archaic thinking and folklore, something which is important to everyone even if they do not realize how much it affects their lives and how they see the world.
