my grandfather witnessed these air raids with his own eyes as a kid, his house is 100 meters from where the refinery was. It inspired him to be a jet fighter pilot for Romania. The oil refinery was American. Americans bombed it because they couldn't stand the idea that their own refinery was being used to aid Hitlers armies.

my grandfather witnessed these air raids with his own eyes as a kid, his house is 100 meters from where the refinery was. It inspired him to be a jet fighter pilot for Romania. The oil refinery was American. Americans bombed it because they couldn't stand the idea that their own refinery was being used to aid Hitlers armies.

@Tavi13 my father's family also lived near a oil refinery. that was Columbia Aquila in 9 mai neighbourhood. their yard was stick to factory's fence. thei took shelter during bommings in a bunker near strejnic, few km away. afther the war the company was taken by Astra Romana and over years, by 1990 it was closed. the famyly's home was demolished by communists in 1979 for building appartments blocks. they were moved to a block like that near Gara de Vest (west train station).

The way my grandfather used to tell the story of the air raid sounded so surreal. But its so cool to actually see what he was talking about. I find this coincidence fascinating. Anyways, glad you have shared your story with mine. And I also find pride in being connected to this historical event!

"Tidal Wave" was one of the biggest actions of WWII and a big failure for the USAF. A lot of American POW were captured but they enjoyed an unexpected great treatment from Romanians. One of my grandparents was with Romanian AA in Ploiesti then. He told me they used to fire their Oerlikon cannons hard till they started to glow bright-red.

Romania had to make choice between Germany and Stalin's Sovjet Union just like Finland had to do. But situation for Finland was different. Finnish Army was never under German military command. And finns fought much more effectively and victoriously than romanians and geografically Finland had better situation - little bit outside of Berlin-Moscow "axel".

Hah hah this is myth. German oil production problems started when red army took Ploiesti. Bombardment never had much effect of the supplies before it. John Mosier has wrote is his book about this and it's another example why bombering germany couldn't damage german war production much.

You are stupid buddy, and you know nothing about World War 2 on the Eastern front. Actually BEFORE the war,Russia demanded Germany to give them Romania and Bulgaria. Hitler refused and tried to bring us into the Axis. Churchill promised he could protect us , just if we wouldn't join the Axis, but we all know he would have turned us down(Just like he did in the end ). So we HAD to join a side ,and since we DID NOT LIKE RUSSIANS we thought we had a shot with Germany .

You have no idea what you are talking about. You are probably an American with no sense of history.
You should understand first the bestiality of the Soviet Union. Then the lets look at the position of Reich to his allies. Romania was supported, Basarabia and Bukovina were eliberated, we were influential. There was no death-camps no persecution.
Romania made the right choice and only an idiot would have chosen the Gulag

YOU guys joined the axis because:
1. YOu wanted Moldavia and Bessarabia back
2. You hoped to get Hungarian territory
3. You has a fascist government
You should have just stayed nuetral, given the Russians the territory they wanted, and let the Germans pass through. You wound up getting screwed anyway: bombed to bits, lost territory, and Russians took over anyway. you guys should have never declared war on teh US, you should have done like Finland

WE wanted Basarabia back . and the teritory you reffer to was not hungarian but romanian part of transilvania. we didn't want any hungarian teritory...which by the waywe don't give a shit about.
Romania couldn't stay neutral . the germans wanted oil from us. if we let germany take advantage of everything we had that is not neutrality ... and we would have been classified as axis supporters anyway so the retaliation would have come to us. we had no choice!

Sweden supplied 40 percent of Nazi Germany's iron ore and ball bearings ( weapons used to kill Jews and Aliied forces, btw) and stayed neutral. Rumania was so obsessed with fascism that it didnt WANT to stay neutral, being greedy for more land ( I dont know why it wanted land which was occupied by non Rumanians anyway..duh!)

30 august 1940 Horty's Hungaria helped by Hitler get North-Transilvania also ROMANIAN TERITORY.
What should Romania do? France was occupied from 22 june 1940, Great Britain was attacked, USA - neutral. Now, to speak about this is futile.

I am an American and am proud of our soldiers, both then and now. They did and do their jobs well.
I am not against Romanians. However, the Romanian government was allied with Nazi Germany. Therefore, they chose to be our enemies. The leaders of Romania allied themselves with an evil dictatorship which needed to be destroyed. If they had fought on the side of the Allies, it would have been different.

There wasn't any other choice then. USA was neutral at the begining of war, nobody helped us. The same thing did Bulgaria or Hungary, also. Your allies, the soviets, stole Basarabia and Bucovina from us and comitted a lot of atrocities against the defenseless population, deportations and killings. Hitler promised us to give back these territories, so we fought along Wermacht. I'm asking you if you are proud of what US soldiers did at Guantanamo?

We were caught in the middle. Both Germany and Russia wanted our land. Who were we to trust? Some country that's thousands of miles away? Romania was always a battlefield for other countries..and other countries wonder why we're still not so developed yet..they sent us decades in the past!All of them!
