@shinobitech13 do you have problems with your shoulder? I mean, was it operated before or something? if not, you're doing it wrong. I am 130 kilos and I do the roll just fine, nothing hurts.
@shinobitech13 The object is to make a circle from your front hand to your opposite hip....support yourself on that circle as you roll and you will be fine.
You transfer energy to the mat when you slap it. The harder you hit it, the softer it hits you. (not a very technical answer, but that's an easy way to think about it).
Everything's important in judo. Even the proper techniques in falling, many people have injured themselves, because; they've fallen "wrong". So really there isn't anything to debate about. And yes knowing how to disperse an impact could be the difference between just having the wind knocked out of you, or a broken rib or two.
I just started judo - first thing they teach you is how to fall. From what I heard from another beginner - who has been doing it for 6 months - I will be pretty much learning how to fall properly for the next 2 months before learning other stuff.
@Motownbrother yes, the most important thecnigue in judo(says me, the yellow belted kid!!) is the "propper" falling. if you can't fall "the right way" you just end up whit broken limbs and bloody forhead.
Okay but what do you do in JUDO? Fucken fall all the time. This technique of a rolling break FALL! IS essential because all you do in JUDO IS FALL! You do practice throws but the falling element is more important. Get your head in the right spot man. All you thinking about is one small portion of judo.
P.S. Do you know how to distinguish a good Judo-Practitioner with a crappy one? Break Falls!
Do you even practice Judo? Honestly do you? It sounds like you have no idea what your talking about. Because this techniques is call a rolling break fall!
ahahaha are you joking? in the judo there are a lot of tenciques xDD and 5 fall XD just 5 XD jodokas alway do the fall because are important for not hurt (exscuse me my english xD)
Dude! Judo is the best at throws and yes...falling... Aikido is also good at falling. A good Judo practitioner knows how to hit the mat from 8' in the air, without getting hurt. If you get thrown over the top my friend...you better know how to fall. I don't even take Judo...But they are the best at taking balance and throws...and yes falls too. You cant slap out from an 8 throw, youve got to roll out or hit the mat with legs hands exactly at the same time relaxed to disperse energy.
I keep getting hurt every time I fall it is really pissing me off, I need to practice more on loosening my body more and using my arm to soften the blow.
keep practicing, I wrote that six months ago and really what got me to fall better is get with a younger dude and just let him throw you as much as possible during randori eventually you learn to relax and not be scared of throws.
well i have to say that i depends on what throw, if i is a basic hip throw or if it is a rather brute one like kata gouruma(may have spelled wrong)some hurts and some don't. No pain no gain! xD
Takahirosanndesu, this does not hurt at all. Do the fall exactly like he said, after you are confident jump a little and work your way up, You can do this breakfall from height without even winding yourself.
so from height you would try to land feet first in that position and continue onto the roll? or would you take the falling as the force instead of pushing with your legs and just continue onto the arms part of the roll?
the purpose of hitting the mat is to absorb the shock of the fall, so if someone was throwing you full force, if you correctly went with the throw (and didn't fight it, which would increase your chance of injury) then when you land your arm would take the brunt of it. It shouldn't hurt too bad/much if you do it properly.

@Cinema4You Slamming the ground is essential, because it takes the force off the fall. Hence the name, a breakfall.

It's nice when your opponent lets you get ready to be thrown down !

do you have to touch ground with shoulder or not?

@tipailovas You have to roll on your shoulder. It's a lot easier than just diving.

Have you tried placing the back of your front hand against the mat, instead of the palm? It has made a big difference in how smooth my rolls are.

Judo not about falling (sky diving about falling), judo about throw some one and not to be thrown.
But it is not FALL any way, it is ROLL, and due rolling it is stupid to slapping mat.

We talking about falls and there aew non of fall on video.
What you see on video NOT FALL it is ROLL.
And differently bad one. So what do you like to proof?
And if your judo about falling it is to bad for you.
My judo is about to not fall.
And if judo about falling, than gymnastics and motocross about falling too.
And boxing about be punched in head, and war about to be killed.
You are mentally sick man, if you couldnt differentiate safety elements.

Also, you push off the ground to redirect your momentum forwards instead of downwards.
