This has to be the best quality footage I've seen of a pre-war fight ever! If only we had more of these. In this bout we can see how good an all around fighter Tommy Farr was. He only lacked a KO punch. We can also see how Braddock, a fighter with limited physical skills was able to go so far using guts and savvy. I saw more footage of this fight recently on TV and Braddock ended up right in his own corner at the end of each round, making Farr take the long walk back to his own corner.
I don't know if you can see, but Farr is the guy with the lighter colour hair...He's the guy dancing around the ring...And his corner is the one closest to your computer screen...Hope that helps
Tommy lacked a big punch, but had almost everything else, great ring craft, a solid chin and courage. He took a prime Joe Louis 15 tough rounds so I wonder what he would do to todays bunch of heavyweights!
Tommy Farr was a great boxer, but like many British fighters before and after him, learnt the hard way that you can't win in the USA if you don't possess a big punch.
Tommy was never a KO boxer. In this fight with the former champ Braddock, even the New York boxing writers agreed that Farr had won easily on points, but the ref gave it to Braddock. Tommy also lost on points in New York to Lou Nova and "Red" Burman although he did beat "Red" in London in 1939.
Tommy Farr was once described as a gallant welshman with an appetite for fighting, but your right he lacked the big punch. He was an arm puncher. But he went up against the best and always finished on his feet God bless him
Tommy Farr went the distance with the great JOE LEWIS and it was a close run thing! He won the crowd but lost to the judges Farr was unluckcy in his fights in America and a victim of home town descions! A musical has been written about his life and he remains a hero in the rhondda
Every time I see his fights on YouTube I see a very clever, skilled boxer. Your'e probably right in that he got the wrong side of some close decisions. Good head movement, good jab, threw a decent over hand right.
Tommy Farr lived out his last years living in a house across the road from me. He was always out walking and what was very noticeable was the length of his arms and his very big hands. Tommy's best boxing days were before I was born. As a teenager I used to see his son Gary's rock band in the local clubs.
a british boxer would never of got a hometown decision in america, tommy beat the brown bomber joe louis to ,but was robbed, tommy was to much of a gentleman to complain
Might of English: Max Baer destroyed Farr in their 2nd ft. in Madison Sq. Garden. Farr was a fair boxer, but when he met Baer for the 2nd time he was destroyed.
he did beat farr ,but what i saw farr won, farr was gracious in defeat ,but it was a home town decision in my eyes, americans usually give it to the agressor ,anyway to last 15 rounds with the greatest boxer of all time ,he didnt do so bad
That Braddock was a big'un, huh? Farr's game, and clearly the better boxer, but Braddock's brute strength finally proves too much for Tommy. Good stuff.
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please view my clip of some 1930's boxing tobacco cards. They include Tommy Farr, Jack Dempsey , Joe Louis, Jack Johnson and many more.

Dream: Farr was very underated, as he was a great boxer. How did he die? Also, did you ever talk to him about his career.?
burtwiseman 2 years ago
His son Gary Farr was a great singer (T-Bones, Lion, solo work). Sadly, Gary passed away of a heart attack in '94.

James J Braddock won. He retired after this fight. This was his next fight after losing the championship to Joe Louis.
