What an eclectic lineup! Seals and Croft, ELP, and the Eagles sharing a stage with metal pioneers like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. I don't think such wildly different acts would ever be part of the same festival nowadays...
I remember turning on the TV to view this and thinking "I'm viewing and being part of history" I was more stoned than Mt Rushmore. Girls were calling me on the phone to go out. HELL NO! wild horses couldn't have dragged me away from that TV set. I Immediatly called my dealer and ordered a huge stash to last me through the concert for me and me' mates. I had to invite some chicas over to make it complete...DRUGS,SEX and ROCK & ROLL after all, it was the glorious 70's Ah memories (sigh)
I was there - could not have told you who I saw though - Hee hee! Oh well - it was great fun though - remember Black Sabbath & Deep Purple and that is about it - remember climbing over a fence to get there and spending about 45 minutes in police station on the way over a traffic violation - not me the driver thank God! Those were the good old days!!!!!!! Rock & Roll is here to stay!!!!
I was there - one of the best concerts ever better than all the other jams to come. I remember climbing the fence but remember the 10 freeway being a parking lot.
California Jam in April of 1974 was followed by The Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia, Missouri in July of 1974. The line up of performers was mind-boggling (see the roster on Wikipedia, but ignore the urban legends that are told on that site). Then in August of 1974, yet another classic concert was held - The August Jam in Charlotte, North Carolina. I missed California (still in high school), but I hitch-hiked to Sedalia, and then to Charlotte. Classic Band after Classic Band - incredible!
No alcohol was allowed in this concert. So outside the entrances near trash bins we're cases and cases of beer. People we're drinking thier fill and walking in. There was a small river of piss that was filling up outside near tunnel entrances, girls we're walking around bare foot and sloshing around in it thinking it was natural run off.
Why doesn't VH1 show this from begining to end. This is probably just as good as Woodstock which is the only big concert you ever hear about.Vh1 shows too much of the so called classic current stuff instead of the real classics
i was there--16 years old with 2 bucks in my pocket......those 1 hour long bathroom lines!!!!
black sabbath was the best memory. hey, the ticket only cost 10 dollars! I told my mom it was just a couple of local bands getting together......300,000 people later...
Thanks SteelyDug.I can't recall where I heard this, I think it was posted at the ELP Digest some time ago. ELP were so ahead of their time, and that tune with the computer going out of whack at the end was unheard of at the time which was probably why people were freaking. I heard that they did that tour in quad, so I can just imagine what that must have been like with that sound going around in circles from speaker to speaker. I only wish that the entire ELP performance was on tape.
google search California Jam DVD, and you can buy a DVD online...I have it. It's not the complete ELP set, but it has a number of songs by them and performances from all the other bands
Thanks Steelydug Could you clear something up for me, possibly?
I have heard rumor that when the final portion of Karn Evil 9 3rd impression with the computer going out of control at the end, (before exploding, of course) was taking place, that the police and security guards didn't know what was going on, and people were "freaking out" so to speak ( those unfamiliar with the tune, o course). Do you know if this is true?
I do not recall anything to do with police and security, but I certainly recall the place was going crazy over the effects.....Pretty "cutting edge" for 1974!!!

Yay! Good ol' YouTube!
I've been telling people about that flipping piano for decades!!!!
Ha ha! My friend and I were 15 years old and it was our very first rock concert!
We made friends with a really cool (and kinda cute) guy with a floppy hippy hat who'd been to Woodstock... oooohhhhh...
and we just followed him stepping over blankets and people till we got pretty close to the stage!
So much fun!
