  • Is it that difficult to accommodate the "high mountain" sickness"? I am a bit hesitate to go there because of it. Would like to have comments from all of you who have been there. Thanks.

  • @ donjose06

If you are worried about altitude sickness you can go up to attitude gradually. Mountaineers do die from attitude sickness but its often on peaks that are 8000m or more, where the drop in air pressure is much higher. Lhasa is probably much lower than any base camp of a large mountain.

A woman I know who lived at sea level felt sick at 1500m on a ski field, but that's fairly unusual. But I guess you don't have many mountains in Hong Kong.

  • @ donjose06

My parents went to Tibet and took it easy for a day or so to let their bodies adjust to the attitude. Your red blood cell count goes up and your body adjusts to the lower air pressure. The first night I slept at 2500m I had a headache, probably due to the lower pressure.

  • @SoundOfHell1

I highest figure I've seen for Tibetans killed is 1.5 million. But this is probably more important

MILLIONS killed under chairman Mao's rule in the PRC is estimated at

  • I think probably U will say that your families and ancestors were all killed by Chinese, huh? If all of you say that, the Chinese would control the world.

  • @ wjh5846

Most of those killed were Chinese. Do you know about the Persecution of Falun Gong which began in 1999 ???

  • @SoundOfHell1 I think probably U will say that your families and ancestors were all killed by Chinese, huh? If all of you say that, the Chinese would control the world.

  • Long Live The Dalai Lama....

  • I wish the they left Potala Palace and everything in 1 mile radius untouched.

  • Who gives a crap about Tibet.... there have been thousands of small religious cultures that have gone extinct in the past... why is this one different?

  • @iamborghini1

Tibet got rid of the death penalty in 1913. They showed they were very advanced in their thinking. Tibetan Buddhism has spread around the World if my country is anything to go by.

  • Free Tibet, China, Palestine and THE WORLD, from the oppressive hands of the elites that control all peoples of all countries, including ones that YOU think are free, like US and England.

World-wide awakening to humanity's ongoing oppression must and will begin! We are all one, let us unite in peace against evil.

The world belongs to us. :)

  • thought it was a peace place??

  • "ccupied by China"? then why don't you ask your "governments" to "liberate" the "freedom longing, oppressed people" there? our tibetan brothers and sisters in arm will bury your pathetic asses in no time!!!

  • The INVASION of Independent Tibet began in late 1949 and is still continuing in 2009 with immigration.

    FREE Tibet and China.

  • come to "free" china and see what you will get!!!

  • I know people go to China and what they get is lots of smog.

    FREE China from pollution.

  • Great...I have seen this vid many time!! ^^

  • awesome!

  • Lots of people are fighting about the race, but we are all brothers and sisters of the human race. What is really going on is the fight with rich and poor. Nobody should be kicking in the door down at anytime of the day or night. We all should be helping each other, instead of pointing fingers or who's land is who's. We all really don't own the land or country, we are human beings first, let it be.

  • Tashi Delek, I really love the song and you taken some great snap shots. Namaste!

  • Real China is behind the Great Wall. The rest is occupied land. Tibet is suffering under the brutal Chinese occupation. The Evil Middle Kingdom (China) does not care about the culture or people of Tibet. It cares about the land and the resources which it can consume. I pray that one day Tibet will be FREE! Shame on Evil China for destroying the ancient culture of Tibet. MAY TIBET BE FREE ONE DAY!!!

  • Funny, an American talking about 'occupied land' and 'evil'.

The 1 million innocent children and other civilians you murdered in the Middle East is ok right?

5 million Iraqies left Iraq, part of them live in China, where they feel safe. Who's evil?

  • In 50 years of occupation China has murdered more than a million Tibetan, has almost wiped out the Tibetan culture and has made the Tibetan people live in fear. More than 150,000 have fled and hundreds are fleeing the "liberated" Tibet. If China made it so good in Tibet, why are people escaping?

  • escap?murder? that's happen because the culture revolution ,not only the tibet people ,also lots of chinese died, that's all past my friend, any country might made mistakes, world war , white hates black, but life still continous, don't let youself stuck in 50s,60s, look the changes in China, i m chinese, i can feel how much oversea tibetans miss their homeland , when i was in UK years ago , i always had dreams about China. 6millions tibetans lives in China, they make China strong.

  • different eh? well how about the government give out equal rights to the tibetans living in china, if not the country. i love how china claims to be communist but it's really capitalist. the government controls all media and the nation itself. manipulates the tibetan culture and creates their own propaganda history for the tibetans. most chinese don't release this because of how much the government has control over media. they block anything that offends the government.

  • infact, during the recent speech when obama gave out about how they oppose communism, they manipulated his words to say other things.

  • 知道什么是中国特色的社会主义吗, 世界上只有一个,中国人民正在实践。 资本主义的好处和坏处我想你都很了解,发展了几百年了,经济危机还不是从美国开始的,现在的美国已成了一个软柿子了

  • from

    tibet. com/whitepaper/white5.html

    (remove space)

Over 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of the Chinese invasion and occupation of Tibet. Today, it is hard to come across a Tibetan family that has not had at least one member imprisoned or killed by the Chinese regime. According to Jigme Ngabo, "after the suppressions of 1959 and 1969, almost every family in Tibet has been affected in some way".

There is heaps of good information at

    tibet. com/whitepaper

  • hah my whole grandparents were burned by PLA and communist china...

  • Tibet was never a pert of China.China just need land to adjust it's population. The best solution is to cut chinese people dicks and hang on fucking wall of china...

And 4 years ago, i travailed to Tibet and stayed there for 1 year , i like this place getting better than better , i agree with the effort done by chinese gouvernement! Their culture and their tradtion doesn't lost and just to limite a little immigration thing!

  • Please watch

    Escape from Tibet

    watch?v=1AedSjjH3LI

and learn about young Tibetans risking their lives escaping PRISON Tibet (the largest prison in the World) to FREEDOM. Tibetans have no freedom in Tibet.

  • I traveled to Lhasa 22 years ago when i was 17, before there was any tourism, it was disgusting to see how oppressive the chinese military was. They where everywhere and where so dominant of the local tibetans even back then.

Tibet was a beautiful place and the Chinese wrecked it just like everything else they touch.

I hope one day to see Tibet free of Chinese rule.

and yes i have travelled throughout china as well.

  • "presently occupied by China"?? You getta be kiding me! Tibet have been a part of china since your grand..grand..grand..grandfather found America. LOL... Welcome to China anyway~

  • WTF Tibet was never a part of china. they even had thier own gov and language and thier NOTHING LIKE CHINESE PEOPLE they have diff culture different looks different, diff religeon.. they had thier own flag and nothing realted to china except tht they were nieghbors.. just because chinese princess married a tibetan king tibet doesn't become part of china. and all that slavery shit is all your goverments way of coverin g what they have done to us!!!

  • wtf is wrong with those 'free tibet'ers? Tibet has always been a part of China. And religion is widely worshiped there. Chinese government even has special laws that favor ppl from Tibet, who can have as many children as they want(v.s. only one child for Han Chinese) and Tibetan kids can go to Top colleges even with a lower score than their Han classmates...Tibetans are having more freedom than ever and of course richer than ever.

  • The Chinese are also going through pretty strict measures to make sure that modern buildings are built in traditional Tibetan architectural style in Lhasa. I don't know where this "washout" of Tibetan culture is coming from. Only ignorant Westerners who speculate based on biased media reports, then go around advocating free Tibet while hardly knowing anything about Tibet! They also seem to think modernization and preservation of culture is mutually exclusive. That's just dumb.

  • Tell that to the millions along the Yangtze valley who's homes are under water or will be soon. I love how you people take every opportunity to call Westerners ignorant.

  • Tibetans don't care about being rich, don't you understand?

  • I'm sure they want to burn yak shit and eat yak meat while living in wooden huts at subzero temperatures instead. Seriously, if China "freed" Tibet, it's like the U.S. government ended all benefit programs to Native Americans.

In fact, why do we people even build buildings! We should be preserving our caveman culture too.

  • Don't even go there. Have you spoken to Tibetan people about their situation? Stop making excuses for China. The people want to be autonomous. If I were to say that Iraqi women had more freedoms because we invaded and took our SH then you would be the first one calling bullshit. So don't even start this "Tibetans are better off now" bullshit.

  • This isn't bullshit. Note that Tibet is already an "autonomous region," has been for the last 20 years or so. It is governed much like the patches of Indian reservations across the U.S, with patches of urbanized land (ie Lhasa) and vast areas of empty land that's still left open for the Tibetans to roam their yaks and live their roaming lifestyle. The fact is, having a modern government there give the people who WANTS ot be westernized at least a chance to do so. If they want to (next post)

  • I had yak meat and it it dam good. Lean, no hormones, non-GMO. I brought home some yak jerky. Also had sheep lung. Not too shabby. The people are better off eating Yak than we are eating fucking Big Macs.

  • Chinese People have to realize that we the Tibetans don't associate as Chinese. We live under the Chinese that is fact but are we happy that is a question which the answer is, would a animal be happy if it's caged in a zoo. Sure, there is somewhat superficial freedom but would that animal be at same freedom as in a forest. Our religion, our faith, our legion lies with our leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

  • Are you really Tibetan? I was just there in October. I spent my 1st wedding anniversary in Lhasa. I love your country :) Shame China has dominated your land. Communism is just bad... I have less politically correct words for it but I'll try to keep in clean.

  • Check the fact and history, since hundreds years ago, China had administration and military control over the region. don't be stupid.

  • What the hell are you saying "don't be stupid" I know all that shit. Communism sux ass man. plain and simple.

  • Okay. Any poltically aware person would probably know China stop being really communist back in the 80s. Now I can tell you China is completely capitalist. That's the reason for the whole economic boom etc.

  • I agree in technical terms but people are still afraid of the government and are controlled by it. I saw it for myself. The 3 gorges project is a great example of this. "The good of the many outweighs the good of the few". Millions of people displaced and ancient villages under water for this project. Those people had no choice in the matter. In a democracy they would have had a say. So, call it a free system but they have only figured out how to make money. People are still subjugated bythe gov

  • Yes, and you don't think people are controlled by the government in the U.S.? Will your representative really fight for you if the government wants to buy your land and build a military base on it? Same ol same ol. You can complain, but there's no gurantee. That's kind of the political condition in China atm. People are no longer afraid to complain and protest.

  • Of course! Every country has that. BUt you are on crack if you think people are NOT afraid of the Chinese gov. I know several who are.

  • Agreed. But they probably haven't been to China in the past couple of years. The government loosened A HELL LOT compared to only 20 years ago. Look on any Chinese blog these days and you'll see tons of entries making fun of Hu. Honestly, as long as you don't go to Tiananmen and say let's overthrow the state these days nothing will happen to you.Progress is being made. Have hope.

  • I agree progress is being made but much of the 'regular' people are kept down. I enjoyed my visit to China and Tibet. The people were great in both places. We visited a family in a Beijing Hutong and also a family in Tibet. Very cool. The Yak meat was friggin' delish in Tibet and much of the food in China was good. We were in Xian', Chengdu, Fengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Chungqing and others.

  • keep living like they have been, nobody's really stopping them. Tibet has been Chinese territory (ceded by the Mongols when they lost the war with China, the Chinese never invaded Tibet, the Mongols did) since the 13th century. The "cultural genocide" had 700 years to happen. But look, Tibetans are still their independent ethnic group today.

  • Fair enough. Can we be pals now pal? ;) I am tired of fighting over this subject. So, what's your stake in this game? Are you Chinese American?

  • Okay :P

Actually I'm more American Chinese than Chinese American, if you know what I mean :o

I might actually visit Lhasa by the train this summer if I can pay off my student loans early.

  • Excellent! Have you been before? It's really neato! (hate to use gay words like that but it fits LOL). The air is so clear. No coal pollution like the river valley

  • Nope. Tibet never really opened to the tourism until very recently since there's virtually no road to get there and only 1 airport (where lots of ppl died because of sudden altitude sickness, so it's usually to fly in such high altitude). I do look forward to seeing it though. Granted, because of difficult accessbility it's still one of least polluted place in the world. (I currently live in the Bay Area. You can't even see the moon clearlyon most nights because of smog -.-)

  • Hey.. I love San Fran. We just visited San Diego a couple weeks ago. We go to San Fran, Sonoma, Napa, Monteray and Carmel too. Love Cali. As close to Italy as you can get in the US. Lhasa was cool. Getting off the plane was a challenge. You have to move very slowly or you will pass out. LOL!

  • What is wrong with Tibetan kids taught to speak in Chinese?

Do you mean Hawaiian kids are not taught to speak in English?

Chinese-made pots, cloth, and other junk were sold on the shelves of Walmart too.

    So?

  • The evocative voice of Techung is well-suited to accompany these images of Lhasa. I traveled there alone in 1985. The arm of the PRC was strongly felt: Tibetan kids were taught to speak Chinese, Chinese-made pots, cloth, and other junk were sold at the market as though Lhasa was trying to become a Chinese tourist attraction. I hope that Tibetans there today have kept their culture and dignity even if they must protect it in secret.

  • Great video you put together. I was interested in seeing what the streets of Lhasa looked like today.

I don't know what you have read Boreal but both you and Bushangels are only partially correct. I suggest you read the writings of Melvyn Goldstein from Case University (check out his website for articles including serfdom in Tibet), Geoffrey Samuel or John Powers' book, "History as Propaganda" regarding Tibet. Both the Tibetans in exile and the Chinese have rewritten Tibetan history.

  • I was in Tibet in May 2006 for ten days. Not part of a tour group, I arranged my own visa and transportation.

For the record, I don't consider "commie" to be the same epithet as those you list, 'lovin.

Bushangels: I have done a lot of reading and know the history quite well. It is a Chinese occupation of a distinct culture. Your's is the standard "Chinese" response, and quite frankly, it is nonsense. Peddle it elsewhere if you please.

  • For your information,

the whole land of Canada onec belonged to the Indian people!

  • You know the Chinese and Indian are somewhat related. So Boreal99, please return Canada to Chinese.

  • @CelestialKindred For your Information Ohh how many chinese lived here in Canada now.?? Tibet is free and independence country..

  • @CelestialKindred ...and the U.S. as well Mexico.

  • wow good song... i love it

  • Boreal, Were you just there? Were you part of a Viking Tours group?

  • Are you a Commie?

  • A "commie"? This is 2007, not 1954.

  • And Commies still exist don't they?

  • Yeah, and so do gooks and nips and chinks, but those are degoratory words that we don't use anymore, like the word 'commie'. You sound like Richard Nixon!

  • 死美国佬!

  • We working for new china!

  • Someone want to translate this for me? My Mandarin is kinda rusty...

  • some abusive words. Never mind.

  • @Boreal99 It means "Death to evil U.S."

  • Thank you

  • Nice, clear shots! Pretty song. Check out my Lhasa vids at "Craigbe." I shot the raw stuff in '95. Boy, has it changed!

  • Very nice!

  • coooooooool! awesome job!

  • Awomely, Awsome. Well done!
