beautifully delivered storytelling, in the tradition of jerry jeff walker & those before & after him. great to know the kids are carrying on in the family tradition *wink*
A lot of people did the talking blues back in the day. Listen to the song Talking Union by Pete Seeger. Pete even said Woody was the one that taught everybody how to do it. Woody would be proud that Todd is carrying on the tradition! This video is awesome.
Don't get me wrong, dig Todd but isn't this tune very similiar to a old song by Jerry Jeff Walker called Ramblin Sramblin? It is pretty obscure so might just be a coincidence...
@boulderjames I looked that song up. JJW Has so much stuff out there I haven't heard. But yes, that's a very similar tune. If you watch the entire video, Todd references a Woody Guthrie song and a Bob Dylan song. They both used that chord progression and talking style. Todd's just carrying on the tradition! :)
@boulderjames Todd has long stated that Jerry Jeff Walker was his inspiration to become a musician - I'd bet that it's a very intentional homage, tribute, & loving theft.
@boulderjames The theme from The Beverly Hillbillies uses the same format too. It's Americana brother! Just like 12 bar blues...all the same but what differentiates it is the lyrics & the "noodling" within the framework.
@boulderjames This song is tribute to Bob Dylan's "Talkin' New York" (2nd track, Dylan's eponymous first album), where he talks about moving to NYC to when folk singers were the thing.
I haven't been to a Todd Snider show in forever, but he never fails to give a great story or several during a performance. the Moondog tribute show he did in Memphis at Newby's was fantastic!
Todd Snider it the type of songwriter that after you hear his stuff you think, "Wow, he's awesome, but I totally could have written that... and I really wish I did." Then later, when you grab your guitar to try, it becomes rapidly apparent how good he is and how much you really suck.
"...well Slash was just f*ckin wearin 'em." Brilliant.
@Praying4tidalWaves Hi...Did you watch the whole video, or are you making the comment because it appears someone else who heard it may not know?
I only asked because he made references to Dylan and Woodie Guthrie @ the end of the video. i.e.; Todd Snider knows very well whom he was imitating when he was imitating Bob Dylan, who had imitated Woodie Guthrie in his own song. Don't ask me who Woodie was imitating, though. I have no idea. Todd Snider might. :) (I think I have a headache now).

Dylan stole from and built on Guthrie, and now Todd is doing the same. Total folk tradition and beautiful.
