Thank you for posting, I remember my mom had this video tape when i was a kid and I searched for it last night because I needed it. I needed to hear a good story. I am glad I got to hear it.
I remember listening to this 15-20 years ago on Focus on the Family. I think we all have a Norman that God places in our paths. How often do we go around him, cross to the other side of the road (Luke 10.30) to avoid him.
Comically, this man teaches us how we should treat the Normans in our lives. This is a great reminder of who our neighbors are that we are to love as ourselves.
I think this was very judegemental and legalistic. Why couldn't everyone just love norman the way he was? It's important that he was led to the Lord, but why was it with such hostility? Adkins repeats the fact that he really didnt want to do things for Norman, but you should be happy and willing to help people, especially if they need the Lord. I saw this at camp and I just didnt like the attitude of Adkins while leading Norman to the Lord. It was very unaccepting of "different" people. -Alex
I think perhaps you should listen to this again. You are missing the reality of this story. This is simply a man telling about how the Lord used someone who society had dismissed to change and touch someone who by everyone else's standards had it all together. The story is not only about Norman changing but Mike Adkins as well.
@ShenandoahToni Are you being judgemental and legalistic? I think the point he is making is that we are all that way, even God's people. Especially God's people. I don't detect hostility, just humor at an unfunny reality. We all need to be loving and accepting, then our churches will be full!
@ShenandoahToni the reason he repeats this is because it was true... at first. Eventually he came to love Norman and did these things out of love. He cant change the story to make himself sound accepting because he wasn't at first and he became accepting through Norman
My momma was good friends with Mike Adkins they grew-up together. I remember attending his church as a kid. I lost my mom to cancer 3 years ago. I wish she was still here she would love hearing this. She was from the same small town he is talking about.
I have found some "strange" people to be most delightfully innocent. Of course some can be very dangerous. I've found if I watch them, I can tell pretty much who would be threatening or not but honestly one could never tell. There are so many mentally deficit people out. We must pray for them & reach them when we can. They're only human after all, and need love too.
