@36rhys - carp are introduced exotics in our area and not highly regarded by most anglers-although the trend to catch and release is slowly gaining acceptance.
The area I fish is overrun by an increasing number of Europeans every summer, so it's just about all catch and release. I occasionally keep some for a few people that I know that like to eat them.
I think the C&R is causing them to "wisen up", they are getting harder to catch every season in that area, although they are still there in massive numbers.
I posted a carp fishing video as well. My channel is XScramBlerX and the video is called "fishing with the boys." I had to repair the video with a free program called VLC MEDIA PLAYER. This prgram repaired the audio of my video.
If you want to realease it without lifting it out of the water, just wade in using waders or a bathing suit. Grab your line, and remove the hook with the fish in the water.
If you plan to take the fish out of the water, you are better off using a net. Grabbing the fish by the gills is more dangerous to the fish, as you may puncture them and cause the fish to bleed out and die.
I didn't bother landing the fish, as it wasn't that big, and I wasn't keeping it. It was about 12 lbs or so. I stopped landing fish under 20 lbs, no use to make them suffer any more for no reason. The line is 50 lb Power Pro.
The rod is a 6.5 Rhino, the reel was given to me by a friend that was going to import them from China. It is a Bed Stone 3000 series baitrunner, works great, I've caught dozens of big carp and some pike on it too.
Long Sault kicks butt, there is no other place to go when it comes to carping. Special thanks to the carp club / Jeff Vaughan for keeping them well fed...

@36rhys
I can't imagine hauling around a stinking mat, my landing net smells bad enough after I go carping.

If that's a Rhino, what's the reel though?
Nice carps. Glad they are still waiting for us to C&R them again!
