It's been a week now and it seems that the audience of the show care much more than the kids who were in it. Mayfield for sure, have gotten over the fact we didn't place - I personally think we should all move on and look forward to the other acts next year - I'll definately be attending, as I'll have left school by then.
Everyone was amazing and I think we all deserved to be there, whether we were Glee or not. Everyone was worth the claps we recieved.
Okay, people, can you stop with the bitchy comments? Because, honestly, I don't think it matters. We didn't win, but we had a load of fun and, in my personal, slightly biased opinion, we were really good. :). So overall, it was a good night. Just enjoy the video you watched and keep your mouth shut if you didn't like it. We're not international superstars, we're a bunch of school kids.
And if anyone's peeved about missing out on the studio prize, Rant studio is *free to book and use* for anybody in the PO1-PO6 postcodes, so all portsmouth schools can. Stop griping :)
And staying as neutral as 4evermusic10, PGS have only done glee since march.. give them a chance! shame they didn't film... they would have if they thought they'd win. sounded quite surprised to me :)
@Calearin I'm not saying PGS weren't good, but Mayfield were only doing Glee since six weeks before the show, as we had a big performance of Sweeney Todd on the year before.
The event info on the guildhall website says "inspired by the recent popularity of teen drama ‘glee’" and "industry professionals will judge each choir on vocal performance, choreography and costumes".
St Johns did choral to a pleasant standard with no choreography and in school uniform, Mayfield had striking choreography and costumes, though their singing suffered from the intensity of the dance..Both were mighty impressive with what they focused on, just didn't do all three.
@Calearin How can St Johns sing to a "pleasant standard" and yet be "Mighty Impressive? - You contradict yourself! Again I repeat, no-one has been negative about PGS and the boys are children!
I think most people are wrong about saying how PGS shouldn't have won - there were complicated six-part harmonies, far more than the other groups, the intonation and diction was also impressive. They also smiled and looked like they were enjoying themselves and were supportively cheering on the other groups. As trebles go SJC weren't hugely impressive, there are many better boy's choirs. Visit cathedrals and listen to some boys or girls choirs sing some of whom are much more talented than SJC :)
@steinwayanddaughters Spoken like a true PGS person! I think you are certainly in the minority on this one. PGS tuning was awful in places. Also I believe the St Johns boys have only been a choir for a year - incredibly impressive! "Werent' hughely impressive" - haha - a little bit of PGS jealousy? - and i am neutral. Try scolling down and reaing all the positive comments.
@4evermusic10 tuning for PGS was very good generally (umm none of the tenor parts had top Bs i believe - if tenor parts at all!) we have been a choir since march dude - and lots of the other choirs were a pleausre to watch - i was merely defending PGS against jealous comments and dude if you really do know anything about music - revise your ideas about impressive and go see some other choirs! and as for dance, singing, and costumes - you have to get the right balance!
@steinwayanddaughters Hmmm - thanks for your reply...yes i do know something about music - hence why I have a degree and several diplomas in music and sang with a cathedral choir for several years!! I also examin for ABRSM. So now you know. St John's Chapel Choir were still in a different league on the evening and deserved to win.
@steinwayanddaughters No-one on here has in anyway said anything negative about PGS. More about what the compare said would be judged, and what was actually judged. You are the first person on these comments to be specifically negative about the performance of one of the schools on the night. In fact everyone bar you has been very positive about ALL the schools. I agree with 4evermusic10. Sounds like sour grapes and inter school rivalry to me.
@tufty2610 actually there have been comments such as "its a wonder how PGS won" so I was defending my choir, and I thought lots of the schools were very enjoyable to watched and i cheered and clapped for them! Not really inter school rivalry - as I member of many different choirs including glee and cathedral choirs, I think people need to try to understand that they cannot compare choirs when they have not seen other choirs of the same genre - like other chapel/church choirs!
@steinwayanddaughters people at catherdrals have adults in their choirs dear, and they are fully trained singers.
as a mayfield student, I still think SJCC were AMAZING, though possibly not Glee, as discussed below, but they were in a completely different league to PGS, and my own school, if I'm being honest. I do like the way no one is agreeing with you here, it makes me happy.
@GinnyCullenSparrow errr check your factsdude actually most of cathedral choristers are just kids including young boys (like SJC) or girls (like some of the PGS) + i sing a cathedral choir and I'm a kid - dude most people don't agree on this because they probably have absolutely no proper musical training and do not understand music in a way that they can compare and understand this, so although SJC were alright you cannot call them "excellent" without a comparison to other choirs of that type.
it was a SCHOOLS competiton, therefore you compare them to others SCHOOLS, not fully trained Chapel Choirs, most of whom have probably been singing for the best part of theirs lives.
SJCC WERE better than PGS, that is obvious from the reaction below and above, they were also better than Mayfield in the vocal department, just so I am not being biased.
@GinnyCullenSparrow basically what i'm trying to say is that most people watching this are not qualified to judge the voices because of lack of knowledge of other choirs of that type however i did enjoy watching all the performances x
Thanks for the info, that certainly explains a lot; it seemed unbelievable that all schools bar one did songs in the style of glee if it wasn't required as suggested by pompeymusic. I'm sure everyone would have fielded their best chapel/chamber choirs if it was a purely choral competition. I do feel sorry for SJC who either misunderstood or did not get clear info, as tufty2610 suggests.
@MrRnlg It WAS purely a choral competition - as read out by the compare and the marking criteria. Perhaps St Johns Boys didnt get clear enough info - it doesnt distract from the fact though that they were musically (and visually) OUTSTANDING. My suggestion would be to keep the competition as it is and just have St Johns Chapel Choir as the guest act next year. It would be something different at the end of the evening whilst the judges made their decisions - We'd all love to hear them again!
@tufty2610 My apologies, I inferred from your suggestion that the organisers were at fault by presuming that everyone had seen the TV show Glee that you felt that they had not adequately communicated the nature of the competition to the competing choirs. Unfortunately the compère did not help matters by only reading out a subset of the competition judging criteria, which seems to have fuelled a lot of this debate.
@MrRnlg I wholeheartedly agree.... as a member of the audience, I have no knowledge of any other judging criteria other than that which the compère read out and you are right that this has fuelled this debate. But I don't believe anyone would enter children into a competition and not fulfil the required elements. ReyNotEry stated " had he had any awareness of what 'Glee' was, I'm sure he would not have agreed to enter as he is well aware it is not 'their bag'."
@MrRnlg It is a shame, because I really enjoyed the WHOLE evening as it would appear did ALL the children. With sports, when the whistle blows you accept who won. However, when it comes to children and talent - people get very protective and heated. No matter who won, there would have been a debate as to who was the best etc. But in reality... the kids would've accepted the result let it go by now.
@tufty2610 I can't agree more; it was wonderful to see all the schools performing, I for one would not want to stand up on that stage and sing in front of all those strangers! As gleek84 says, we should be praising the organisers for pulling this together. It's a real shame it's been soured by certain people making accusations of local politics, biased judging and bribery, largely based on lack of information.
i think we should be praising the organisers for giving my students and other schools a chance to sing & perform on the guildhall stag. let hope the event grows and @pompeymusic if you are in the pop world then maybe you should offer your services as a judge.
as i was involved in producing one of the choirs it is clearly stated from the time we signed up for the comp that it was based on the tv series 'glee', the criteria read out by the compare was only a condensed version of what we received. SJC were by the far the bes technical choir but they didnt fulfil the full performance criteria. i hope the schools next year can acheive SJC's technical standard while remaining true to the 'glee' concept.
I feel the fault is entirely that of the organisers. They should not have presumed that everyone watched the TV show Glee. In fact, if you google the definition of glee club, I think some would find the results quite surprising... "a club or society organized for the singing of choral music" or "A group of singers who perform usually short pieces of choral music."
Hopefully lessons will be learnt by the organisers and they will be much clearer as to their requirements next year.
@tufty2610 They were clear about the requirements and you are correct with your definition. I think everyone who was there agree St Johns fit both these definitions and were far and away the best choral group. A very talented group of boys.
At risk of repeating myself here....please let me point out. I greatly admire all the choirs who took part. Children must learn to perform at venues such as our Guildhall. Well done to everyone.
However, I am a professional musician who has adjuidicated national music fesitvals (Pop/Choirs/Glee etc)
I have absolutely no connection to any school in the city whatsoever so am unbiased (unlike the judges!).
So once again....St Johns Chapel Choir - you were UNBELIEVEABLY BRILLIANT! Amazing
I personally thought all the schools were amazing in their own way and the judges had a really tough decision to pick just 2 out of all the schools, but they have made their decision now and it was their judgement that counted at the end of the day. And as a performer from CPGS then sorry if you got annoyed at our cheering but winning something isn't something we do all the time, so yeah wouldn't you have done the same if it was you? x
Can I repeat my comment from below. The fact that this is a Mayfield Choir video and ALL the comments are about St Johns really says it all.
Mayfield at what you did you were really very good, and there were other acts that were good as well.
Everyone is discussing St Johns Chapel Choir, everyone is discussing St Johns Chapel Choir because the were just OUTSTANDING. They must be one of the best school choirs in the country not just in our city. WOW.
As the father of one of the boys in SJCC I know that the event was described to the choirmaster by the organisers as choral competition and had he had any awareness of what 'Glee' was, I'm sure he would not have agreed to enter as he is well aware it is not 'their bag'.
My son enjoyed the night and was gratified by the audience response but does not understand why, on the basis of the rules *read out publically from the stage* they were unplaced.
As a professional musician in the world of pop not choirs, I am still not sure what Glee is! What is a Glee song?
I was told this was a MUSIC and a CHOIR competition.
So - musically - St Johns Chapel Choir were simply the best by some distance. I have no bias towards any school - but - the best performance on the night was undoubtedly St Johns - hence the standing ovation and cheering when they finished.
@pompeymusic This competition was the Portsmouth School's Glee Competition - inspired by the programme 'Glee'. Glee is based on a show choir: Singing, Presentation, Dancing, etc - therefore it isn't just vocally based.
I was absolutely blown away by St Johns as a Mayfield student and was part of their standing ovation, but if this was being judged by the name, they weren't 'Glee-inspired'. They were amazing - but I think this was the wrong competition for them.
St Johns were absolutely amazing. But it wasn't Glee. At least if you enter a Glee competition you should sing Glee songs...
Mayfield's singing was okay. The soloists weren't great, but I'm sure I wouldn't be in this sort of environment and pressure. Well done! The choreography was also amazing. But although appearance and presentation was scored, choreography was not.
It's a shame we can't see PGS's performance again...
I was at the show on Saturday night. There were a number of good performances - including Mayfield and others. But St Johns should have obviously won.
The marking criteria the the judges were looking for (read out to everyone) clearly only mentioned MUSICAL elements. No marks were awarded for dancing.
As several others have pointed out below - St Johns Chapel Choir were in a league of their own. They really were UNBELIEVABLY BRILLIANT!
Comiserations St Johns :) i am so proud to be part of that school. I didnt watch that competition but know that the chapel choir would have been amazing :D as usual. I am their number one fan !! Go St Johns!!!!!
Just read all this 'cause I didn't see Mayfield perform.
Sorry but "Glee SHOW CHOIR" competition infers that it's not just about the singing and needs to be a mix of Vocals and dance.
St Johns were amazing! but didn't fit that catogory.
@ King Ricahards student.Won the world cup? Didn’t know Being happy was frowned upon.. My friend and I are at City girls at coreographed the whole thing, hard work payed off.
If the girls happiness offends you then, deal with it.
Lets not kid ourselves here - you just have to read these comments. This was a MUSIC competition. St Johns Chapel Choir were in a league of there own and the REAL winners.
I have no biased towards any of the schools - but I went to see a music competition as I work in the world of (pop) music - I dont like biased judging. St Johns - you were INCREDIBLE!
MrRnig - you clearly didn't listen to what the Compare said on the night - NOTHING about dancing or glee (whatever the heck that is). He talked solely about musical ability - sorry but you are wrong - as were the judges. I enjoyed the dancing from the Mayfiled team very much (which they would have won) but the singing was well below standard and rarely in tune.
I didn't know what a Glee Choir was before Saturday, and I'm not sure I do now.
On the night there seemed to be three competitions: a dance/talent show that Mayfield won with ease because they were fantastic; a church choir/choral competition that St John's won with ease because they were fantastic. And there was the main competition that the other schools were in, and for which there were actual prizes.
Sorry Mayfield & St. Johns, you were both great, but no prizes in your categories.
I went to this out of curiosity and was independent of the schools on show. The judges got it very badly wrong on this ocassion - what were you thinking off - are you ex - PGS or were you bribed? The young boys from St John's were absolutely outstanding and WON this by a country mile. Sorry if it offends but the 'Compare from Xpress FM' read out that it was about musical ability - not how to to dance in a hat.....local politics at play I suspect.
Well done Mayfield. However, as a totally indepentant person in the audience I have to agree at being STUNNED by St Johns Choir. They were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and easily far and above any other musical act. How the Grammar School won we will never know. St Johns were simply the best by far - it was a music competition and given the marking criteria read out by the compare they met everyone. Shame on you judges!....St Johns Choir - you were the real winners! Does anyone have a video of them?
I feel that the real winners didn't win. St johns had it in the bad but it wasn't glee they were a choir. You should have come second... City girls thought they had won the world cup when they come second ha, but yeah. loved this.
@bekkirawrr It FELT like winning the world cup! We were really excited to get second, we'd worked really hard for it.
That being said, Mayfield were excellent. We didn't get to see them perform as we were also in the first half, but most of us have watched the video now and we all agree that you guys were great :D
It's pretty good for live :)

Mayfield ^^ you were good!

@dopeydave1000 I still think we did very well for having six weeks of practice.
the singing may not had been amazing, but after six weeks, I think we were bloody good.
