When you consider the fact that when a guy joins the legion hes gives up his identity, is considered expendable by french governemt and is almost certainly going to see front line action. legionnaires Are a Different Breed altogether.

Pay = 1000 euros a mounth. 1 in 10 die in training or action.

Id put my money on a legioner over any standard infantry Regular from any nation.

Speaking from the view point of an X british army soldier...we did a joint exercise with the FFL...they shat all over us, they're like tanks in human form!! You can never over estimate the FFL. After 2 weeks of near no sleep we were hanging and they were ready to go drinking!!

@enok2010 it really isn't. At the start it's tough, but if you talk with people who have been in it, and they're honest, it's mostly fucking around fighting the boredom and cleaning. One of the ex-legionnaires labeled it a fake army.

If they don't like cleaning while in garrison why not request a transfer to Guiana, Ivory coast, even request to do a tour in Afghanistan, i guess those are the ones joining up and expecting to be Rambo. I mean if its that easy after the 5 years you can get a french passport. With France being part of EU that means you can live and work in any EU country if you want. Why not just stick it out?

@Baseshocks Have you not talked with any serving Legionnaires? Because I have and know what they do. Also, you don't request anything in the Legion. You could spend 5 years behind a desk, you do not have a say in it. The Legion uses you where it needs you. That is why some people quit. And you will be fucking around, cleaning, doing bullshit. It's not like other armies, look into it please.

It's a real gamble, you may want to join the Legion to travel and experience shit, but there's also the possibility of being stuck doing desk work for years.

@pigeonpsycho It's not quite that bad. But yes, you do clean a lot, probably more than in any other army. There's a joke with the code of honour, saying "legionnaire tu es un volontaire servent la france avec baillet et serpier" i dunno how to spell it but it means youre a volunteer serving france with broom and cleaning rag, especially during weekends in castel, etc. castel is a bit like prison, unless you can bribe a sgt to take you to a brothel on saturday night etc.

@ProbablyCoolerThanU the number of French born citizens serving in the Légion totals 30%. Far beyond any other nations. Germany is number 2 with 25%. Thrre are many Eastern Europeans. America is far, far beneath with something like <1%. It's not a surprise considering anglophones in general are unable to learn a foreign language.

@BaFUD You're wrong. Just visit the official website of the FFL. It's in French. The stats are there for everyone to see. Largest represented nation is France with around 30%. For one thing, high ranked officers are all French. The 25% Germans was true after WWII and until about the mid 80s. As far as I know, it's now more around 20%.

15 days first year, 25 days second year, 35 third year, 45 fourth, and 55 days on the fifth year. Don't expect to get all days though.

Suprised? Not really. Still, a army without proper language is hardly the best army. Many of the people that join aren't even allowed to join their regular army for different reasons.

Some go to korsica and become special forces(airborne whatever), I can see them being better than a regular soldier though.
