The biggest problem I had with Hillsdale was the fact that they teach you how to think and govern yourself ONLY. Dr. Conner said himself that they don't have a curriculum designed for "career training". I'm sorry but it's pretty important to have career training and have a strong career oriented network with potential employers. Hillsdale would be the best school in the country if combined "teaching you how to think" with career training. Also, Hillsdale's network to real businesses is small
If you wanted an accurate assessment of the value of a college education, it seems to me that you would have some sort of post-college assessment test in basic knowledge in core areas like history, science, math, language, etc, similar to pre-college testing. A lot of these college rankings are based purely on reputation, prestige, age of college, brand name. If the purpose of an education is to learn more, rather than to "get ahead" economically, the entire ranking system would be different.
Forbes has Hillsdale beating schools like NYU, which is rated ridiculously low (in the 200's?), in my opinion. US News has hillsdale at 88. These rankings are so volatile that you have to wonder about them. They are like any rankings, subject to whatever arbitrary criteria the deciders have decided upon. Forbes tends to favor smaller schools, not a bad idea, in my opinion. U of M edged out Hillsdale by a few points, but most of the graduates i know from UM really hated those huge classes.
Hillsdale could do better with this video, however. Good to see my great Professor Andrew Cuneo in there. Brilliant, Oxford educated man and friend. A good egg, in Hillsdale terms. And Dr Whalen, I am sorry I skipped your class a few times. I enjoyed your lectures on 2nd rate British renaissance writers.
Notre Dame is also a great school academically, although with bitter alumni like you, I have to wonder. I cannot imagine a Hillsdale student posting some self-serving rant like that. Hillsdale also operates Hillsdale Academy, a private school whose graduates average a 36 on the ACT (36 is a perfect score). Hillsdale College is a great, traditional school for American civics and Latin and Greek. It is a tiny school which more than pulls its own weight, academically.
lol hillsdale is a joke! The school believes it is some great bastion of classical education but the fact remains that their graduates soon find out how hollow that claim truly is. Good luck finding a job with that degree and that alumni network!! I'm sooo happy I attended Notre Dame instead!!! I have graduated and am now in law school at Northwestern! Good luck finding a job with that Hillsdale degree haha! Oh, and more importantly, I got a true classical education at a far better school!
And did Lenoard "Spock" Nimoy really speak at Hillsdale College? Did Hillsdale College host a trekkie convention at one time? What did he speak on? Mind melding?
I hope you arent using this video anymore for your recruiting. Your list of people who have spoken at Hillsdale contains a quite a few misspellings starting here 11:14 . For example Arianna Hufington is spelled Hurfington and P.J.O' Roark is spelled P.J. O' Roank and its spelled Leonared Read not Reed unless the great American tap dancer spoke at Hillsdale. Also towards the bottome its supposed to be Walter Williams not Williams Walter.
@itsybitsywriter lol don't cry. Hillsdale is a terrible undergrad college. I have a friend who unfortunately attended there. She hated it. She explained how it was not an education but rather a formal indoctrination. Worse for her is that now, despite having a 3.85 while at Hillsdale she has learned that the degree is basically worthless outside of a 50 mile radius around the school. Keep looking there are far better schools out there with degrees that are worth something, like Notre Dame

Forensics, don't know. But debate team, absolutely; they were national champs. At the Loyola Tourney this year, they destroyed teams like Wheaton, DePauw, and Notre Dame.
They need to make it a university.
