Open world IS a genre - it's a non-linear gametype, also known as sandbox. E.g. GTA IV, Assassins Creed 1 and 2, Saints Row. Oh, and RFG.

When I see a game like this, I don't even question the people who made it. They made their point, they are an awesome team. Don't forget project teams all rely on the resources they are given. We can all agree Saints Row wasn't given enough resources and that's why it was less than expected (not to say GTA4 kicked ass). I think Red Faction is definately a step up for the people at THQ. This game's physics engine will be used as a standard from now on.

I agree, when i play a game i like to have a light at the end of the tunnel. Rather than just get cash as a reward i like to get a special weapon and if i do just get cash i like to have something special to buy. Its always nice to be rewarded for what you do. Great review for a great game.

I found that the multi-player was actually very boring. Maps seemed to big sometimes and the game types were lame. Taking out the duck and cover system to replace it with the backpacks was a dumb idea on their part. Campaign on the other hand was good.

No, there is no co-op which is surprising. There are multiplayer modes but no co-op.

Prototype and this are pretty different. Since I haven't played any of Prototype I'd suggest getting this first and holding off on Prototype. I will be throwing a video review of Proto up next week once I get a copy of it.
