it is a touchy subject, i own both and i love them equally, the ak can take a shit ton of damage and neglect and its durable, and the AR has the added benefit of its adjustable platforms, also there are way more .223/5.56 rounds vs 7.62 on the market or to be scrounged should WROL take effect. The AK would last a lot longer but if you maintain that ar15 platform, you only have to worry about whats over the next hill, rather than if your weapon has the strength for another mags worth of work left
very good vid man, u werent bashing either platform like most people and i agree 100% that you would be alot more cpmbat effective because of the ammount of ammo and the weight, plus the small .223/5.56 is a combat multiplier, you shoot one and take 3 out to carry him, dont get me wrong the .223 will kill some one and i wouldnt want to be shot with it, but there both great battle proven rifles, good vid
AK, why? It just always works. Dust, mud, seawater, snow. Soak it, bury it shake it off and it fires every time. My favorite is the 545x39mm AK variants. AK74. My M16's were always jamming, stopping, and required cleanliness to work. War is always and I mean always dirty work. You drag your rifle thru the dust and mud and water while trying to move yourself.
Personal Choice AK...1.Reliability of the low end exceeds reliability of the low end (and higher) AR. 2.Projectile size and price of ammo, 3.Ample aftermarket products
Also love the AR, but hate the finicky characteristics of lower to mid grade AR's. I also respect them for their adaptability as a DMR if necessary. AK's are generally more accurate than others make them out to be, but it will not match an AR in marksmanship.
You have a sick ass AK... I want one, but I bought an AR first. I picked up my AR-15 Smith and Wesson M & P 15 5.556 NATO for 670, came out to about 725 after tax.
I would take an AK in a close range battle, less than 25 yards. But I still would take the AR.
i am currently carrying and testing the ruger mini 14. sucks to field strip, but has, so far, turned out to be pretty rugged and accurate.. of topic slightly but $300 less than the cheapest AR.
More ergonomic for quick target acquisition in high stress situations
More modular for mission-specific tools
Spare parts are more readily available
Modern AR-15's are as reliable as AK
In a SHTF scenario, I'd have BOTH my AR and AK.
But lets say I had to make a quick trip down to a ransacked walmart for more emergency supplies that I ran out of, and there are thugs and mobs everywhere... and I could only bring one weapon.... AR all day
@SurvivalistSong But let me stress this: the most effective weapon during SHTF is food & water. then shelter. then it is people. you MUST have a cooperative/collaborative relationship with other people during a SHTF scenario. history has shown that in past real life SHTF situations, such as the civil unrest in Bosnia not so long ago, a single person (even if he/she was very prepared) would not survive for long. the ones who did survive a crisis had armed families and friends in the house
@SurvivalistSong it does not matter if you have a suped up ar or ak47. or even if you had a bazooka or an rpg grenade launcher. what matters is you have friends and family members who are armed to the teeth along with you... and you work together to defend yourselves and your residence/camp. 5 AK-47's will beat one Colt AR-15 any day of the week.
I live in Cali where the gun laws suck . I don't own either because we can't have high cap mags and we have to use fixed mags or use a "key" to drop the mag. It's freaking lamn bro. Hey what was your MOS? When did you go down range? I was deployed for O.I.F. III back in 04-05. Just wondering. TC!
@futhermucker1 I am in cali also what I do is buy 30 round mags disassembled as parts kits for my ar and ak and leave them that way witch is legal. I shoot out of state and assemble to test the mags then disassemble when I come back. I can help with any questions you may have feel free to email me.
@ptownpresident Dude, that is a smart freaking idea bro!! Do you have a lower reciever that isn't Cali compliant? What kind of AR do you have? Thanks for the idea bro. Spot on! Now I need to get an AR!!
@futhermucker1 I have an AR variant it is an su16 its lighter than an AR it has a hand rail, collapsable stock, bushnell hollosight and a bullet button that is removable with a philips screwdriver. I bought it from a military contractor it was the gun he used. I bought it because of the weight. I prefer an ak47 or ak74 to any ar thats just me.
Owning both a mid length lightweight AR and a Bulgarian AK-74 (5.45 variant) I can honestly say that I wouldn't feel undergunned with either platform, but I would feel much more effective with the AR. It's just lighter, much more 'user friendly' and not terribly difficult to operate. That seems to be one of the talking points in any debate between the two systems, simplicity, but I find it to be a non issue. And with the AR, I find it easier to *easily* hit targets out to 300 yards. Great vid!
Great vid, i also own both platforms. To be honest i would have a hard time picking one over the other. I think there both great platforms. You do bring up a really valid point with the weight.
First, Thank you for putting your life on the line to defend our freedoms. Check out the AK74.....dependability of the AK and the light ammo just like the AR15. It really does the job.
@PISTOLEROS22 Thank you that mean so much to us to hear the people supporting us, i love this country and i love the united states, and its my honor to defend it.
I'm glad u said something about endurance. Everyone has their gear, but can you run 5 miles? Walk 5 miles? Been thinking this for a long time. What about family members? Everyone is ready to rock as if they're by themselves.
well, i doubt a shtf situation (long term, societal breakdown type)would occur, but for me, its a choice between a 5.56 or a 7.62x51. i've chosen both.
ruger mini 14(ati stock, flash suppressor) is a relatively inexpensive choice that will get the job done under 150-200 yards just as good as an ar. i have four, and will get another 4.
my 7.62/308 is the cetme308. $500 plus a $100 trigger job makes, pluse $1 magazines make it an easy choice. purchased one, will get 3 more. weight no problem.
Either one is proven platform. If the ARs base caliber of .223/5.56 isn't enough for you, there are 7.62x39 ARs and .308 ARs too, just as there are AKs that take .223/5.56 and with a magazine adapter, can even take AR mags
Nice choice but you can get an ak in 223/5.56, 308, and 12g also.. same with the ar.. you can get it in 7.62 also! So as far as weight of the round dont matter when you can get it in any cailber..i think u chose the weapon for the round than the weapon purpose. So i ask if it was out of both 223 ak or ar..would it still be a Ar..there aint a wrong choice! but the ak is heavier than the Ar.
Either choice is solid. But for me, it would have to be the AK. A .223 may expand or tumble but, a 7.62X39 will never shrink. If it comes to a WROL/SHTF ( Lord forbid ) I want the biggest round I can get away with for stopping power. There are trade offs for both rifles but, for me the AK is my go to. Glad you made it back home man! Looking at the pictures, it seems as if you were deployed.
@The9Ninexox Like i said there both great rifles the AR fits me better and weight plays a big factor in rifles for me, i need to be able to move quick and carry as much ammo as i can.
@RebelliousTurtle you have yourself a new sub, ive owned ak's , ive owned ar's. personally i cant choose. i love both systems so i just have both, that ends the debate. just get both ;)
I have an AR but have time on the AK. Besides, the weight factor, as a former soldier I wanted a platform that I could operate in my sleep... I was a M60 gunner for several years and I used to run around with that 23lb monster but then I had an AG carrying the bulk of the ammo. For me, it will always be an AR as my personal choice. But if SHTF ever happened, whatever was closest is all that would really matter
thank for the quick making of this video... you brought up alot of points i never thought about. my sks will serve me for now. but i am gonna save up and go ar for my platform choice. thanks again sir.
People Say the AK47/74 is inaccurate. Well Give Me a Good Built Ak47/74 with a Good Barrel, good American Ammo, and A Good Optic, 2 moa and sometime 1 moa are easilly capable...
With all due respect this debate will rage on for eternity. LOL. Each has its virtues. AK is reliable and durable but not accurate. AR is accurate and well made but not as reliable or simple to learn....6 in one hand half a dozen in the other
@BlueCollarSurvival Yes i know the battle will never end, its just my pick of the two you know. i love the ak47 well made rifle, and if i could realistically carry both with the same amount of ammo and still be effective trust me i would lol.
Take my Ar. Light weight , acc , and more ammo. But my full rig I have 8 mags but my light weight rig will be 4 to 6. But your right Aks are heavy after your humping it 10 to 20 miles. I'm 511 and 230lbs and im going to stay with my Ar. It's all about shot placement. Keep up the good work bro.

argument has been going on for years.
AR
PRO: for accuracy and weight, ammo and weapon. all kinds of accessories to better fit the shooter. faster mag swap than AK
CON: has to be baby butt clean, ammo isnt as deadly, cost of the weapon
AK
PRO: very reliable, do not have to keep as clean. ammo cheap and deadlier.
CON: less accurate at longer ranges, heavier ammo and rifle, does not have alot of tactic cool accessories.
4 years carrying m16a2 and m4, i will use it, but prefer an ak. just me
ageiger1 2 months ago
love all the input, but you guys are getting side tracked a bit, its a simple question AK or AR and give your reason why.
