they were treated then he got these young talented singers to sign away their royalties.that was just greed they had nothing left for their children.this is why i tell my kids do not ever sign anything without a lawyer.these kids were young and at first it was like a family and i guess they thought family looks out for each other.eddie kendricks had to sign his rights away for a solo career.its just broke my heart to find out how dirty business can be.no one really gets away with dirt!

Berry has his faults, but he is also a composer of "Money (That's What I Want)", "Do You Love Me", a co-writer of "You Made Me So Very Happy", "No Matter What Sign You Are", "I'm Living In Shame", "Try It Baby"...the company was started mostly on the strength of songs that Berry himself wrote...Let's give credit where credit is due...He did have a tremendous eye for talent, but he was a talent himself...faults and all
@hollidayevery Berry really lived up to that song"Money,That's What I Want".He snould have been living in shame, but he feels no shame.I was wondering if the song"You Made Me So Very Happy" was the one that Blood Sweat and Tears sang in 1969.Did he just write lyrics or did he also write the music?I remember Jackie Wilson singing "Lonely Teardrops" in 1959 and The Contours singing"Do You Love Me" in 1962..Jackie Wilson knew Berry Gordy and maybe that's why he didn't sign with Motown
@GGE47 I can't say for sure, but I have always heard that Jackie had an interest in signing with Motown, but was under contract to Brunswick Records in New York. (Sidebar: There is a scene the the movie "The 5 Heartbeats" where a light complexioned singer has been "coerced" into remaining in his contract with a "New York" record company...I have always heard that this scene was a reference to Mr. Wilson).
@hollidayevery I love that you asked about "You've Made Me..." It is one of my favorites, and even though BS and T had the bigger chart success, Brenda Holloway sings the song like no one's business...Check it out. I am sure it has to be here on YouTube somewhere!
@hollidayevery Thanks for answering my question.I just heard both versions and Brenda's was more for the soul charts and BS and T was for the pop charts.I liked the 45 rpm better than the album. It had a short part on the album that interrupted the flow of the song and I guess why that was eliminated for the 45.It was also shorter for the airtime.I could also see their names on the label.I doubt if Gordy wrote music and lyrics like HDH did.
@GGE47 I agree with you...I don't think Berry was as prolific as HDH, or Ashford and Simpson, or Whitfield/Strong, or Smokey, but remember, he started the company because of the strength of HIS own ability to write material that had been proven to have commercial appeal like the Jackie Wilson songs: Reet Petite, Lonely Teardrops, To Be Loved, and others. Those are the most famous ones I can think of off the top of my head right now.
@GGE47 Berry has always been a set of contradictions: He was as close with Smokey as anyone ever, but others, not so much.
"You've Made Me..." IS the same song BS and T recorded. The credits read: Frank Wilson, Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, and Berry Gordy. Supposedly the song was originally written by sisters Brenda and Patrice, then producer Frank Wilson helped them finish it, then Berry helped finalize it...common practice. "Reet Petite" by Jackie is also a Berry composition.
barry gordy got far too much credit... he isnt a singer or writer.. he discovered great talent is all... they were great to begin with it wasn't difficult.
@deathbyaraven Actually he IS a writer. He got his start writing for Jackie Wilson. Lonely Teardrops and Reet Petite are Berry Gordy compositions. He also co-wrote Love Child later on with The Corporation. As much as he's a stubborn businessman, he WAS an excellent talent as well.
@deathbyaraven If that's true and it's so easy, why don't you become a mogul? Hell, if it's that simple and obtainable, why doesn't everybody who wants a easy, lucrative job just 'discover great talent' and become a multi-millionaire? What a preposterous contention. *smh* Haters gone hate...
On the local K-Earth Oldies but Goodies radio station here in Los Angeles, one of the DJs said that an American group kicked the Beatles off the top 100 Hits List 6 consecutive time in a row in the 60s. My mind was ruminating that perhaps its was the Beach Boys, or the Doors, or some other Rock GROUP... and then with utter surprise the DJ announced it was the Supremes! WOW! I was so impressed, and quite proud of the LADIES and the Motown Music Machine, genuine American institutes, for sure!
it took the rest of the world to grow into & APPRECIATE this song for its OVERWHELMING BRILLIANCE! happy to say i was FEELING it then & LOVING it to this day!!!!!!!!!! it just keeps coming at you with a FORCE a DRIVE that is UNMATCHED!!!
folkes should always save every video as soon as they see it because it will be taken down sooner or later. I had the Ain't necessarily so video from ON BROADWAY somewhere. will try to repost it under a disgused name of course.
Hi do you have many videos, I'm looking for alot, especially one where they sang "Stop In The Name Of Love" on a show where Diana is on stage and Flo and Mary drives bumper cars in the middle near to end of the video, but that was taken down, please send me a reply, thanks.
I may have that somewhere as I usually copy them from my temp files.. I tell people all the time never use the name Suprems as they usaually get puled down sooner or later
The ones I copy from temp files, i don't upload ..well at least not any more. I just save them to a disk. fro my own use. Motown will never release most of their videos ..not to mention the thousands of hours that Gordy has of them in concerts and tv specials from around the world. ..he hired professional Hollywood camera men to record the Supremes both back stage and at press conferences etc. but we plain folks will never see them, Maybe after he dies, they will be donated to some museum.
@sandralawson18 I meant all the various Rock and Roll and musical culture exhibits and radio museums... they have special concert and lecture halls to see video and home films not available to the general publuc. Many celebrities donate these to museums.. we general people will never have acess to studio fims and othjer films that Gordyhas of all his artist. some of those that they show with the young jackson five, Motown has thousands of hours of video on them and The Suprems and others.
@etrax2000 recording, traveling,--- rehersing shopping- in their hotel rooms- even running through airports and eating at foreighn restaurants and meeting dignitaries. I love the way you Brits still appreciate this music. It's a disgrace here in the States: it's just considered "oldies." Most young people wouldn't know this song from "Stairway to Heaven." Thanks for the video.
No--that was in the 1960s (forty years ago). I'm talking about NOW: and what I'm saying is right. The Brits appreciate this music NOW more than here in the States, where most of the young don't know anything about it. .
I am in my early 20's and know mostly every song these girls sang, and although I have heard of "Stairway to Heaven" , I have never heard the song itself
Pure r&b soul away from the pop inflections the supremes Diana, Mary & Flo had previously released as singles.
and just think I had two 45 vinyls of this single in 1966 one I had won from a fan club the other i purchased and wore out both copies. until I got Supremes a gogo.

@etrax2000 Yea! But, each and everytime you do
that, You Tube might ending up taking from you, just
because of frenchment bit. You've might as well better off buying things from Amazon, instead. That's
what I'm doing.

@etrax2000 I'm sad. Because, I know I'm never gonna hear any of their music, again. Because I grew
up with Berry Gordy's music, since I was just toddler.
Well, there's nothing we can do about, but enjoy it

And The Supremes, Marvelettes, Stevie Wonder,
Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Junior Walker And

same, I'll tell you that music. That's for sure.

You know, what I will do, is to buy some
CD's from Amazon, depends on some of
the music that you like, and you can record sertain songs from the CD for your
ownself.

@etrax2000 Hi! If you planning on download or

just erase some of the music from my website.

@etrax2000 So, I just do them a favor and just erase
all the music from the website. It;s not I can't buy my
own music from Amazon. I'll will never depend on
