I am 61 year old Novice biker, and just sold my black 1983 Yamaha Venture (not a bad bike) due to financial constraints which was the reason i bought it to begin with three years ago but unemployment forced the issue. Not to downplay the reliability of Honda, my reason for choosing Yamaha, was their close imitation of Harley, but now I figure , why should I own a look alike and not the real thing! Next time for me, Harley Davidson is the world standard in Motorcycles bar none! Thanks.
Several people have asked for a follow up so here it is: The bike is at the time of this writing just a few months shy of its 3rd birthday. I have just under 40K miles on it and have had a blast. At least once a year I pack up the bike and leave Colorado heading east to Maryland. The past few runs have been straight out I-70 in about 26 hours or so. I ride it straight though. I've been through one set of tires based on wear indicators and do regular maintenance otherwise.
A well made video. Some of the lettering was hard to see against the photo background, but overall entertaining. Since you prized comfort and gadgets above all, the Wing is clearly the right choice for you. I made the same comparison you did 5 years ago, but with different goals. I wanted long distance comfort and simplicity, but have no use for GPS, stereo systems, or heated anything. I chose the '06 Road King and have been happy with it. It just fits me.
This is bullshit. You are a Goldwing rider. You never tested any of these other bikes. You're just acting like the best choice is a goldwing. A bike you have already decided to buy before checking out any other. I've had goldwings and harley dressers, hands down the harley is the more comfortable bike. And it doesn't feel like it is falling apart.
I bought my GL1800 on March 4 2011 brand new and today it has 15409 miles on it. I have owned harleys and choppers my whole life but a few years ago I bought an 84 GL1200 and put over 100000 miles on it and sold it for more than I paid for it. Love goldwings
I just bought my first GoldWing after a few other Hondas, including an ST1100. I got an '82 Standard. Only 568 lbs, it's half engine! I love it and will get an 1800 when i can afford a used one. There is just NOTHING like a 'Wing.
Very nicevideo (2008 'wing in titanium) We just got back to Wi from yellowstone/glacier(2up) absolutely magnificent machine! Tried the vision, I keep wanting to toss the my keys to h-d folks we meet up with( the ones too good to wave back ) and say" just ride the sombitch"... just to see their expression when they get back but I'm keepi'n this one just for me:probably the last bike I'll ever need to buy.....
@46ace... I've got an 06 Silver comfort pack and after a number of bikes over the years I just know this will be my last bike. It's bloody marvelous ! You come home from a full days ride (always very reluctantly) and still shake your head in wonder at this machine. There is simply nothing else that comes even close to it. HD owners can keep their overpriced, overrated shake bags. you'll never get me off my wing.
I am on my 4th Goldwing, an illusion blue 2002. I purchased it in 2004 with 3k on it, 41k later, it is still the finest machine I have ever had the privelage of making payments on.The 1500's I had before it were great bikes, but the 1800 is just amazing, and continues to amaze me year after trouble free year.
Goldwing. But didn't undertake such as process as yourself. Had previously owned a '03 BMW R1200CLC but had problems with it including dealer service. Happily I made the change too a '08 Nav/Comfort wing. Couldn't be happier.
Nice vid, with the mentioned readability problem. i used to have a Yam Venture, the V-Max engined tourer. i Totally agree with you on the need for utter smoothness in a tourer!
Even a well balanced V or in-line can't measure up to a boxer engine!
Check out ucanhireme 's vids, he has some cool concepts about future ads for the Goldwing and other Hondas!
Nice vid and congrats on the new bike. Love the comments on "American Greatest Embarrassment". Unfortunately, I had trouble reading all the text, esp @ 3:30. BTW, I;m spending the winter restoring a '76 GL1000. Where it all began.
The wing you can't go wrong with,I ride 06 royalstar td, I had a goldwing before this bike. If I hadn't got cramps in my hips from the riding postion on the wing I would got another one, only really 2 places to put your feet.Behind the cyclinders or spread eagle. As for the HD,it's a FLIPPIN money pit.
I agree with 1212sman and 2009goldwinger. HDs early years were the best, but like many, has had its bad years. However the new HD as of 09 and up have had all their leaks fixed, motor mounts are liquid filled now and all their engines have been balanced for a way smoother ride with a bit of grunt behind it. I just purchased an 2009 night train from HD and I absolutely love it!! As far as your salesman, well they dont represent all us HD riders. Some people buy bikes 4 egos but not all HD riders.
We have just begun our search for a touring bike. We have a Honda Sabre 1100 which we love and a Yamaha 600 which we also love but the Gold Wing would just round out the types of bikes and here in So Cal where we have 299 days a year to ride we spend lots of time out there. Thanks for your good info!

@2009GoldWinger It has been awhile now. Do you still like the bike? I think Wings are great, the only thing I didn't like about the 1500 is it was top heavy.
The CBRs are great bikes I've riden a friends 1000 when we did a day trip last summer and that what made me decide it was time to give up on sport bike. My silhouette is far more Buddha-like than it was in the good old days. Thats why I went to cruisers and now to a fully dressed touring bike.
Absolutely spot-on about the Harley. What a turd! It's slow, ill-handling, not fast, not comfortable, doesn't stop, doesn't accelerate, shakes like it's mixing paint, & it's slow. "Harley Mistique", my ass "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand"...Right, 'cause I ain't stupid enough to drop 25 large on a piece of steaming crap like a Harley.
I would agree with you as far as modern HDs go. If someone would offer me an HD made in the last 30 years or so I'd take and sell it off at once. Someone offers me one made before the 1970s, now that is a classic bike and it's surprising how many of those are still around. The biggest issue with HD is their (lack of) value for money. But as long as ppl continue to pay what they ask nothing will change.

for any1 here that thinks about buying a goldwing, thinks about warm comfortable seats and handles, airbags, lots of bagage space.
consider buying a car!
In my opinion thats the safer, more comfortable and not more expensive alternative.
also you can ad a couple wheels and a roof, and you have yourself a honda goldwing car

HEY! Harley is Great.......If you want 50s Technology.
Harley is Great................If you want to "Feel" that Thousand mile run.
Harley is Great................If you want to pay MORE for LESS.
Harley is Great................If you own a pickup, a bike trailer, & a complete set of tools, WITH a driver to follow you on every run.
Yep, Sure is tough to beat a Harley..........LMAO........About as tough as deciding NOT to eat a Turd
