Asia's personal savings rates are high while our personal debt rates are high. They recognize they must prepare for their retirement and their healthcare. They have increasing standards of living while ours is decreasing drastically.

It looks great now relatively to the USA but don't forget even the poorest in the US are 5 to 6 times richer than the average peasent in China.

@mmeister7 incorrect on education, averages are higher than ours. As to standard of living (17th century) again only focusing on the most rural peasant. City dwellers are ahead of us. As to wealth, again wrong because the average American is living on credit, far over extended where as if we were socking it away as they do, we'd be much closer in real wealth, however we are capable of reaching a far better standard based on production per worker. Government doesn't care about you, but power.

@mmeister7 You're confusing general education with higher education. Our K-12 education is horrible though everybody MUST attend. It is morphed from education to indoctrination. That's why our kids are ranking among the bottom in the world. unless they're home-schooled The same is true of the arts side of higher education but our engineering and business programs are awesome. Foreign students tend to enroll in science programs, domestic students enroll in arts.

@I808Bob Actually I'd say the higher level education there is worse than general in my experience. PISA tests show Chinese do quite good in general educational achievemnt (literacy, basic math) but the proportion of graduates and post-grads to total population is still low. If given the choice Chinese will go abroad to do courses and training at higher level. Not many have the finances or choice though. Don't get me started on Communist Party Schools and Institutes which brazenly brainwash.

I'm half chinese and half Irish so I'm seeing the country I grew up in going through a depression and the country where I have ostensible ties with rise after 500 years of malaise. Chinese people deserve this. They've been creative and enterprising. I know my future may well be in China but there are some things I would never trade for China - namely civil liberties and property rights, privacy from the state and intellectual freedom, even if I can legally reside.

People were enchanted with socialist promises made and enacted by all politicians since 20's. The consequences are coming down as debt overload. China will probably have a slow down (but probably not a "crash")

China has many issues two of those are:

1. A lack of resources.

2. Internal social stresses

If China had it's own resources for the products; it could raise the wages and produce the goods for internal consumption; at least for a few years.

Additionally, China has a sexual imbalance of males vs. females. Russia also has a gender imbalance, the opposite of China's problem. Maybe the two of them should play matchmaker.

Marc Faber is not always correct though. He is right regarding the general trend, but because he is a popular man he gets 'forced' to make short term predictions on US programmes and most of those do not turn out to be correct.
