Why only 50%? Why not eliminate government altogether! If the history of the 20th century teaches us anything, it's that government only causes wars, depressions, and social upheaval. 200 million people were killed by their OWN governments in the 20th century.
The logic is crystal clear in Bastiat's essay "Government"

@HillcrestCapital Frühschoppen - it's usually a beer rather early in the day, can be combined with a hearty breakfast. Quite common in Switzerland/Germany
What brilliance!! Imagine that: a populace that takes on self-responsibility. You know, if we were all responsible for our own healthcare costs, perhaps we'd have a little more incentive to be in better health. The concept of savings is lost on the North American consumer mentality. Marc Faber is right: it is the individual's responsibility to put aside unds for their retirement and healthcare (prefacing of course, that you take care of your health and lifestyle and use preventative measures)
Marc Faber side with the Austrian school of ecnomics, which is mostly libertarian. There are many neocons (fake war mongering conservatives) who are trying to take over the tea party. The December 16, 2007 money bomb was the result Ron Paul's grassroots' effort to make history. Neocons should piss off!
Did that guy just say it was unfair because Chinese compan doesn't pay health care and doesn't pay pension for it's workers, the playing field is not leavaged WTF. Jesus Christ I wonder how this pretty boy get this job
You focused on his statement to fire half the government along with Obama? Big whoop. Did you hear the part about level playing field with China and personal responsibility to save for our own retirement and healthcare rather than relying on Papa government? Asia's personal savings rates are high while our personal debt rates are high. They recognize they must prepare for their retirement and their healthcare. They have increasing standards of living while ours is decreasing drastically.
@I808Bob They're savings are high because they have no education, healthcare or pensions or transport provided by government. In many parts of Asia, people are living in the 17th century. It looks great now relatively to the USA but don't forget even the poorest in the US are 5 to 6 times richer than the average peasent in China.
@mmeister7 incorrect on education, averages are higher than ours. As to standard of living (17th century) again only focusing on the most rural peasant. City dwellers are ahead of us. As to wealth, again wrong because the average American is living on credit, far over extended where as if we were socking it away as they do, we'd be much closer in real wealth, however we are capable of reaching a far better standard based on production per worker. Government doesn't care about you, but power.
@I808Bob Sorry bob...you're flat delusional if you think the average chinese is more educated than the average american. Watching cult libertarian youtube videos does that to you I'm afraid. Agree on need to measure net wealth but again on average, americans are still far wealthier. Look up OECD economic data. Wouldn't trust communist party data to be honest as I've learned 1st hand here in Singapore how its compiled. America has problems and China is growing but tahts the extent of the problem.
@mmeister7 You're confusing general education with higher education. Our K-12 education is horrible though everybody MUST attend. It is morphed from education to indoctrination. That's why our kids are ranking among the bottom in the world. unless they're home-schooled The same is true of the arts side of higher education but our engineering and business programs are awesome. Foreign students tend to enroll in science programs, domestic students enroll in arts.
@I808Bob Actually I'd say the higher level education there is worse than general in my experience. PISA tests show Chinese do quite good in general educational achievemnt (literacy, basic math) but the proportion of graduates and post-grads to total population is still low. If given the choice Chinese will go abroad to do courses and training at higher level. Not many have the finances or choice though. Don't get me started on Communist Party Schools and Institutes which brazenly brainwash.
@mmeister7 Actually rereading your comment, you saying the average city dweller has higher standard of living to Americans is something someone who has never been to a Chinese city would say. Try visiting these places before talking out your ass on issues you don't know anything about. Its pitifully hilarious what type of world you must think we live in. And yes, government power is helping the chinese catch up, if only for its own sake.
@mmeister7 "Its pitifully hilarious what type of world you must think we live in." I know, I simply can't imagine the squalor. One of the things the new tech age has done is bring us all a little closer and give us a peek into each other's existence. I get it, the government is capable of any evil and America's is limited by its constitution, but our people are asleep, seduced into a slumber of reason by the sirens of ease and comfort through government's promises to keep us till the grave.
@I808Bob I still don't get you at all about government. Anyone of any political persuasion, including the Chinese I've talked to would say that the government interferes in the Chinese economy much more than government in the American one. I think you'd be intellectually demented if you were to think the government in Communist Party China is some sort of pro-libertarian free market beacon of hope.
@mmeister7 Of course I don't have any hope in Chinese gvt. Neither do I have any hope in American gvt. I am increasingly hopeless for American culture unless we turn it around. The encouraging thing I see is the Chinese people are waking up to the reality of self reliant self preservation. Gvt ain't yer daddy, he don't care for anybody but himself. The only way socialism works is on a small scale where everybody volunteers.
@I808Bob Like it or not at least America's government is democratically elected. You might not personally like who's running the show but at least you have a say. By the way I find it increasingly patronising to talk about the Chinese like that. The fact is Chinese people have had harsh lives for centuries. They've never had democracy. Don't you see a link there? That such an epic civilisation can't even provide pensions, helathcare and non-political education. Gov is what people make of it.
@mmeister7 Yeah the Chinese have suffered under Mao and ohters but things are changing and they are becoming democratic, Many Chinese are going to Universities and they are getting smarter. This is a natural transaction, the US will fall and become a rogue regime I can already feel it also the Europeans look at all the violence. These Pensions and other entitlements only spoil people like children and make them worthless. The great men always had adversity, Ford, Edison, and Carnigie were poor.
@jezza1789 Agree on the US . Particularly about the rogue state bit due to the millitary industrial complex its been massaging these past few years. China will never become democratic. It hasn't in its 4000 year old + history shown me anything to the contrary. if you think entitlements are starting riots you're wrong. Ethnic minorities have been sidelined socially in europe for decades due to unwarranted mass immigration policies by elites who wanted cheap labour.
@jezza1789 Oh, by the way the years 1950-80 seen 2 to 3 times more economic growth than even the heydays of Ford, Rockefeller et al. Try telling a women, disabled person, black/chinese man or basically any non-white, non property owning person how great adversity was during 1860-1910. I bet they'd slap you if you told them what happened when we subsequently rolled out the welfare state in the 40s and 50s and didn't need philantropy (usually directed at the arts anyway) to survive. Miserly days.
@mu5icaddict2 Tough question. I'm half chinese and half Irish so I'm seeing the country I grew up in going through a depression and the country where I have ostensible ties with rise after 500 years of malaise. Chinese people deserve this. They've been creative and enterprising. I know my future may well be in China but there are some things I would never trade for China - namely civil liberties and property rights, privacy from the state and intellectual freedom, even if I can legally reside.
@mmeister7 Pt. 1 I'm disenchanted with decades old results. The elected officials ignore limitations as enumerated in founding documents. People were enchanted with socialist promises made and enacted by all politicians since 20's. The consequences are coming down as debt overload. GVT can be changed at huge cost, our founding fathers did something unique in all of history, making leaders servants instead of served like Christian church. judgeright.typepad argh I can't talk inside limits.
China will probably have a slow down (but probably not a "crash")
China has many issues two of those are:
1. A lack of resources.
2. Internal social stresses
If China had it's own resources for the products; it could raise the wages and produce the goods for internal consumption; at least for a few years.
Additionally, China has a sexual imbalance of males vs. females. Russia also has a gender imbalance, the opposite of China's problem. Maybe the two of them should play matchmaker.
He does - he just knows how crap they are at controlling their debts - and he knows aisa and emerging economies are becoming economically more powerful than western europe and the US.
An american telling a person living in Thailand that China does not have a pension system and healthcare for its employees and the guy living in Thailand saying that americans dont take personal responsibility and look to the government to take care of them from cradle to grave. Which is the capitalist system and which is the socialist system?? It is so obvious why jobs have been moving east does it have to hit you in the face?? Low Taxes, low regulations, low production costs, less government!!
@vincentca2004 Ì'm sorry but thats a load of crap. Faber even said that China is due for a crash eventually because it has little to no aggregate demand internally thanks to making most of its workforce uneducated coolies over the previous 50 years. Countries with social safety nets have higher aggregate demand...something that most countries are starved of.
the sooner america wakes up & realise we can't compete..the better...even if china was out of the equation could we produce better goods than korea? Australia? Swiss? Singapore? .. and no matter what obama says...we are not triple A anymore as pointed out by so many top notch observers like Peter Schiff lol Jim Rogers says we are junk bond standards and to be fair..who cant disagree?
Marc is the shit he doesnt mess around he tell it like he sees it, I cant believe that socialist anchor actually blamed China for not having a national health care system the very thing that is destroying us.
Marc Faber is not always correct though. He is right regarding the general trend, but because he is a popular man he gets 'forced' to make short term predictions on US programmes and most of those do not turn out to be correct.
@betover68, true but he also admitted this about his short term predictions. Even when he was credited with getting it right - he has pointed out his mistakes.
funny how stupid tv presenters try to make fun out of Marc Faber. LISTEN TO HIM ! The West is turning into a nanny state while all the money leaves. We need to turn the social welfare tap off and go back to work, and CUT TAXES ! otherwise there will be no welfare and no middle class every one will be broke.
