@peterhbyrne I got the tailpiece at wdmusic.com about 4 years ago...i tried to pick up another one there, but I couldn't find one, but maybe they have them again. Post some pictures when your's is done, I'd love to see it!
hey mike, great build. I'm currently in the process of building a RR flying v, and i was wondering what you use for a neck angle on this flying v and your face melter V.
hey mike, love the vid. just starting a flying v build of my own, and i love the way the finish turned out on yours. could you just describe what kind of paint/finish you used, and the process for finishing?
@shademonger13 Yeah, it was just min-wax water based wood stain (the yellow color) that I painted on and sanded away a little...then I made a HUGE mistake and used Deft furniture lacquer for the actual finish. I ended up re-shaping the neck about a year later, and was able to cover the neck, headstock and back of the body with a proper guitar lacquer (lawrence mcfadden brand).
Hi, quick question. I have a neck made for a guitar body I have already built, it's fretted and trussed and everything, but I changed my mind about the headstock, so I'm going to glue some more wood on either side of it and recut it. Will this cause me to need to re-do the truss rod? Thanks
@MBPtheFirst I don't think it would effect the truss rod at all- I can't imagine you'd be adding too much wood to the headstock right? Will the extra wood be in the way at all?
@mikejsloat No less than an inch on either side of the headstock. Not in the way at all. I never understood truss rods much, Had a buddy do it :P Thanks for quick reply
neck to the bridge: on this guitar, it's about 6 1/2 inches, but it depends on your scale length. MAKE SURE your bridge is positioned right in the middle of the scale length; if it's 24.75", then the 12th fret should be at 12 3/8", the bridge should be at 24.75"
neck to crotch: about 9 1/4 inches
Angle of the V: not sure, I followed a pattern, and it didn't give the angle measurement.
@Brickhouse123456789 I got the materials from all over the place: ebay, stew-mac.com, LMII.com, music stores...a bunch of different places, depending on what I needed and who had the best prices.
ok now i have to ask where would u fing those neck templates because i am having suxk trouble none on ebay and i cant find anything without paying 60 bucks
Dude if you want you can go to guitar plans unlimited on the computer and they have a shit load of guitar templates(paper plotted) for about 10 bucks, i just ordered one last week
it depends on the body blank you get- the largest I could find was less than the width and length of the the overall size, so I joined them in the middle. Most Gibson V's are made that way I believe...
Great job. I give you 99%. I am very impressed because you built the neck yourself. You don't get a full 100% because you still cheated and did not make your own fretboard. Using a factory made fretboard is still cheating even though you knocked in the metal fret pieces (I forgot what they are called). I think you could have cut the fret slots. It would have taken a lot of work but I'm sure you could have don't it accurately. You are a good player as well.
wow nice hey im thinking of makeing a flying v but was wondering wat wood do u recomend and were do u recomend geting all the hardware electronic stuff? ty
That was a fuckin good replica. No disrespect intended, but would it not've been cheaper to just buy one (second hand or something)? Not very knowledged on Flying V's, so just wondered. But good work dude, seriously! =D
yes, probably, but I didn't make it to do it cheap; just wanted to see if I could actually do it. Material-wise, it was cheaper, but the hours I put in were pretty crazy.
wow! you must be a very skilled carpenter. did u used to work in a guitar factory per-chance??? lol! ..nice crazy train playin! i learnt that yesterday funnily enough. u rock man!
How do you compare it with a real gibson vee? Does yours have the same satisfaction playability wise, i mean? Did you use also Korina wood and if so, was it hard to come by?
i have a question. Whats easier. gluing a few peices of mahogamy together then compressing it together then cut it in half for the top and bottom of the guitar body or going ehat u did with the templates right off the bat
um theres a dean factory video and they pane down a few peices of mahogany and they glue then together then put them in a machine and it bugs the hell out of me because i have no what its called but it binds all peices together so its like 1 peice (this is for the neck sorry not the body) then they put it through the jointer then using the neck template to cut a perfect neck
First, I congratulate you on the guitar, it looks and sounds awesome, and how fantastic to have something so great that you created from scratch....second, the vid itself was excellent, very enjoyable to watch
Your a great movie maker. I hav watched this, and your other guitar making videos. All a great job. If money isnt the issue, you should build a all "black 3ply binding 2 emg no inlay DEAN ML!!!!!!!!! jk can't wait to see whats next! XD XD
it's good; 12" radiused fretboard- sanded it like crazy with a radiused sanding block, then filed the frets with the same block, so it all matches. also installed the frets with super glue so they wouldn't move at all.

3 things I need to know.

2: distance from bottom of neck to crotch
3: angle of the wings of the V
