I have something to say . when you see a sign that says no Jake brakes it should also say NO LOUD MOTORCYCLES TO!! I find the loud motorcycles really anoying since they are making noise for no good reason at all. Atleast the noise of a Jake brake is justified since your saving wear, and tear on your mechanical brakes
I just removed the restrictive baffles from inside the mufflers so now the mufflers are just wide open hollow spaces. Ideally I would just replace the entire exhaust system with 8 inch straight pipes, but don't have the money for that yet.
@Hotrodx199 yes it`s much louder with 8 inch strait pipes and more throaty i find. i remember driving from Edmonton Alberta and passing a KW that had 8`strait pipes. he came up behind a slower car as i was next to his cab when he let off the throttle i about jumped out the window it scares the hell outa you lol
I think it depends on what your idea of "louder" is. haha. Because I personally find the 5 and 6 inch straight pipes more obnoxiously loud, while I found my 8 inch pipes beautifully loud. ha ha. I couldn't handle driving my 97 peterbilt with the 8 inch stacks down hill with the jake on and the windows down very much because it would rubble my teeth out of my head. And I don't like going down hill with my 5 inchers because it makes me go deaf from the higher pitch loud noise. I LOVE 8 inch!!
Dad drove a 74 KW with a BCI cummins that had tall 8 inch straight pipes. He drove past a guy that had pretty much the same motor with 5" dynaflex mufflers and stacks, he said he could overhear the jakes on the truck with the 5" stacks then he could with his 8" straight pipes.
Nope, I made the mistake of thinking I needed to sell that one. So when I realized I made a mistake I bought this one which is older, and isn't as nice, and doesn't have the nice specs my 378 had, but it has a much better engine. And I don't have a $1,000 a month payment on this one like I did on my 378.
I was about to say give it more fuel but since you live in California you might get in some trouble due to all the emission laws they have down there.
Well actually, the guy that owned it before me had the engine rebuilt, and when they rebuilt it they really turned it up and put a bigger turbo on it. It makes some pretty good smoke when I put my foot to the floor. It has more turbo boost than the guage can read, and it is significantly more powerful than the 550 in my last truck. I can't pass other loaded trucks like they are standing still. It's amazing. I really want to put it on a dyno sometime and see what it's putting out.
That's crazy! My dad had a 65 KW needlenose with a small cam 335 and it was turned up where it kept up with a 475 detroit you couldn't pull under 1800 rpms or the pyro would rise faster then you could lift your foot.
nice man well thast deffneelty a great engine too show off nosie with and im guessing u might have plans to put 8inch pipes or some sort of straight pipe down the road deffenelty sound a bit better
Yes am deffinitely planning on putting some 8 inch straight pipes on this one. There is just something amazing about the deep rumble generated only by nice big stacks that I just love! Straight 5's or 6's just don't quite do it for me. They are just a little too high pitched. But for now since I don't have money for new stacks, I just decided to do the cheapest thing.
yup it works and then people ask what size engine you got 550 and you laugh n say 425

@chuckbear1961 There is no law prohibiting the changing of motorcycle exhaust. Most motorcycles down shift to slow their bike down.'

I don't use the brakes much on my 1200 sportster, the engine does a fantastic job of slowing it down. (and I love the sound)

Jake brakes sound cool as hell. However any un-muffled engine of any sort boils down to noise pollution in my opinion.

what exactly is gutting out the mufflers/exhausts?

Nice job. I LOVE the sound of jake brakes, especially with 8 or 10 inch stacks.
transamfan81 2 years ago
Yeah, I can't wait to put 8 inchers on this truck. I love the deeper sound of the 8 inch or bigger stacks.
dasani110 2 years ago
Do you know if the exhaust is louder with 8 inch stacks compared to like 5 or 6 inch?

not having that $1000 a month payment is a hell of a lot better than having something nicer

For sure for sure!!! It has been so nice not having that big payment hanging over my head all the time that I had on my 97 Peterbilt.

I'd get like 8" 14' flattops but that's just my personal taste.
