@Sordidlives1973 I used to think the same way you do, but cut them some slack. You do realize that Maiden has been giving us music for 30 years, don't you? The musicians are probably a little tired. Besides, all of this stuff is a new direction for them. They started going more progressive in the 90s and that stuck. It's not the same old Powerslave or Number of the Beast stuff, but this is still Maiden.

That being said, I prefer Dance of Death over this.

I love the stories and messages in Iron Maiden songs! The lyrics are pure genius and they aren't about shit like getting drunk on friday nights like a lot of songs nowadays. The image that was brought to mind from this song was a ruthless king who doesn;t care about who he kills but does so only with the thoughts of power in-mind. A man who says he feels repent for the things he has done but does not truthfully feel that way. We can all interpret these songs into events that occur in our time.

Just came here from the Dio song of the same name... It's an interesting thing, you could say that both songs are about the same person. Dio tells the story of the young and cruel tyrant, and Maiden tells us about the old man who regretted his crimes of the past and tried to make his peace with god, so he can finally become a true king.

I think this song is about Oedipus, I always imagine Oedipus recieving his awful prophecy and trying to run from it, killing a man on the way, becoming King by pushing for the answers, forced to find a guilty man within his new city and searching for a conviction that he craves which will lead for an eye for an eye, finally his life being lived in penance.

So far... and this coming from someone who grew up with maiden through the 80s... this album is growing on me.. i like satellite 15, talisman, this one, coming home.. not bad for an album as a whole. maiden sometimes takes a few listens.. i mean, how many people fell in love with quest for fire on their first listen? it may not be the BEST maiden song, but it has its moments. and awesome interlude and is now a beloved song like all their songs become.. they don't have a bad song do they?
