I can hear THE CLARK SISTERS ALL UP IN HER VOICE...especially with that call back at the end with the little girl...LOL...and also some ARETHA FRANKLIN!...thanks for this post.
I worked on this show at the Cambridge Theatre in London. We're talking about (wait, let me think)....1995, if I'm not wrong (many years have passed). I remember the rehearsals when Chaka would grab you and sing to you as you passed by the auditorium. Hearing this number with the DIVA (I don;t say it lightly) at a distance of 3 feet was a life-changing experience. God bless her and the soul and spirit of Doris Troy who was also a phenomenal lady and who lives on in my memory.
All this reminiscing and nobody will say what year this song was recorded. Chaka sounds young here. In middle age her voice became more ragged and "steely" . On this post she is a vocal "goddess" doing things that seem almost iimpossible. Wow!
@BLAQUEMUSCLE Chaka defies imagination. Every singer I know who sings as powerfully as Chaka has at some point damaged their voice. No soul singer has sung so well for so long. I always vascillate between Mariah and Chaka as my favorite singer. Chaka has a better chest register with more range in that register, but Mariah has major falsetto and used to have a great chest voice. No other singers come close to this dynamic duo.
@BlaxxBchr Check out Jill Scott LIVE and Rachelle Ferrel (LIVE, or other wise)!!!! You may also like Lalah Hathaway, who is also off the hook, live!!! Also, the Clark Sister. Now be blessed and enjoy your ability (blessing) to hear such AWESOME voices! Cheers, love! - J
Peeps i was in the band as the drummer, with luke smith, mike brown, freddie thompson and Basil Meade, and the best of the UK gospel Singers as the choir.. one of the ultimate best times of my musical life.. Praise God!
@TheSophiemariemusic Sophie it's SCARY how time has flown!! I auditioned for the show LOL (Errrr I didn't get thru lol but Amen Anyhow lol) Great show, great memories!
I saw her in this show in London....it was wild experiencing her voice in the medium of a theatrical show, sort of like when I saw Patti LaBelle in ARMS TOO SHORT.
You are so lucky! I was going to see her in London too but I was so ill I couldn't go and had to give my ticket to a friend. She came back raving about it with loads of my other friends and I felt even worse! I wanted to see the show so much but was in such a bad way. It was ona long time ago and I still have visions of how good it must have been. I guess it was just not meant to be.
Chaka done gave me The Spirit. I can't leave this song alone yet. I gotta hear it again. You wanted to suck me into Chaka's web with these songs didnt you BLAQUEMUSCLE? lol.
@lokijordan Sorry, but I wouldn't consider Chaka a successor to Aretha at all. Chaka really stands alone. Chaka is still able to do what she did vocally in her 20s, 30s, and 40s. Now that she's 57 years old, she's come quite a different road than Aretha.

YES! She is the one and only true successor to Aretha. As much as I love Natalie Cole, she's something else. CK is "The One."
