this is not wastegate chatter, the chirp, chatter or whatever you call it is when the exhaust coming from the turbo has nowhere to go and reverts back through the turbo compressor making a chirping noise, it isnt bad but you have to respool to gain boost again and the bov has to be adjusted so the air does not backtrack as stated
@xripperx898 the exhaust continues to go through the turbo and out the exhaust, its the trapped compressed air from the inlet side that passes back through the compressor.
If there is no BOV, recirc etc as with the above car this is the only way for the compressed air to go when the throttle closes but yes as you say if there is a BOV it shouldn't make this noise.
@SmithsVideos Wastegate refers to the exhaust side as it controls the amount of exhaust gases going through the exhaust turbine.
He has removed the standard recirc valve and blanked it, which is on the inlet side and releases trapped pressure back into the inlet when the throttle closes.
sounds good mate i own a focus st when i blanked my recirc valve off i got chatter but it didnt seem to boost as hard as it did before did u notice and drop in power??
Yeh he was down at the weekend, i was tinting his windows and his mate phoned and said he saw his car on youtube, so I had a look. Yeh its good nick, not had any problems with it, well if he has he ain't told me.
Im not saying BOV don't have a purpose im just saying from my experience on the cars ive owned and tuned myself it hasn't had any effect removing the BOV ( apart from the noise )
Mate it hasnt got one fitted lol i removed the OEM item and fitted a blanking plate from forge. As for the comments about lag and my turbos going to explode lol ive never had a turbo go running this setup on any of my cars, all have been running higher boost.
All my cars have felt no different with or without a BOV fitted.
@importsc41886 thats not the BOV its the turbo stalling when the throttle closes, as the oem recirc valve has been removed and blanked off the remaining compressed air that is trapped when the throttle closes has nowhere to go and is forced back through the compressor stalling it and making the flutter sound.
Sounds nice dude, always preferred this to the sound of a dump valve.

You'll probably know this already but when vaccum isn't applied to the blow off vavle the waste gate chatters when you let off the gas since the blow off vavle needs that little vaccum force to open up the blow off to release air, so it won't create pressure.
Compressor surge will not destroy your turbo!! Unless it´s very old and about to give up anyway! The "benefit" of having a BOV is yet to be proven. In relity it´s very hard to notice any difference at all! It doesen´t improve the spoolup much, if any!
hes exaclty right . boost ends up getting forced back down the inlet pipes hitting the turbine wheels as it has no where to go . it puts huge amounts of stress . that turbo will go beofre it ment to . maybe 6 months maybe 2 years but it will have an early death . this is why we have bov . bov sot money even cheap standrad ones so why would manufactorys waste their money if it wasnt needed
@danleary123 No the turbo will be fine, the BOV is for emissions and noise reasons. Turbo F1 cars, turbo rally cars, HR31 skylines, GT porsches, VL commodore turbos all run NO BOV and flutter all day long. I have a 200,000km old HR31 skyline that has no BOV, it still has the original turbo with no problems.
The purpose of the BOV. When you change gears, the butterfly in the throttle body snaps shut for a moment. The air coming from the turbo now has no where to go, Bov sits between throttle body and turbo venting the air and keeping the turbo spinning hard on gear changes. Without it the turbo stalls placing huge loads on the thust bearing and you have to spool it back up on boost. Laggy
compressor surge is actually the unvented air reversing back out thru the turbo inlet..giving the flutter sound.. i have it on my evo 3 but only when i tease it without takin it to full boost
even jeremy clarkson has referred to this noise as coming from the wastegate on several occasions.. not many people seem to know what the noise actually is!!
@rachitron fucking a. a wasit gate works on vacume theres no way it can flutter. but you cant explain it to some ppl they jus think they kno better lol.
i had a guy tell me the flutter on his pulsar was an external waist gate but he didnt have one. he had the stock ca18det exhust manifold and stock t25 turbo but he called me a liar. even tho there was clearly no external gate on the manifold and it had the stock actuator on the turbo lol
@gazza726 almost, a wastegate works under vacuum until the turbo comes on boost at which point all the pressure inside the inlet side becomes positive, when the pressure reaches the set spring value, the wastegate begins to open and vents exhausts gases bypassing the exhaust turbine thus regulating the boost pressure.
Wastegate flutter happens under very rare conditions on partial load, partial throttle and is the wastegate rapidly opening and closing trying to regulate the boost pressure.
When will u people learn?!?!.... this is just closed-throttle compressor surge!!!

a Wastegate Is Inside the turbo. The blanking plate removed the OEM dumpvalve
StuntedGrowth300 1 year ago
correct me if im wrong but, it wouldnt have a "wastegate" if there was a blanking plate?

bpain007, don't think it is surge pal especially with the mods or lack of them!

he blanked off the oem diverter valve bud... hence the compressor surge!

3 x Renault 5 GTT = 22 PSI
Megane R26 = 16 PSI
EVO 7 = 1.2 BAR

that's not the wastegate making that noise that is the BOV not adjusted right

Name those cars and boost levels please. Fact is there is a purpose for BOV's and wastegates.
